Questions 23-28

•Mark one letter (A, B or C ) on you Answer Sheet.

Psychology in Business

Nowadays it is often not enough to be an expert in your own field of business, It helps to apply a little psychology to your business dealings. Some psychological study shows that all have different perceptions, which affect our expectations and attitudes in life in general and in our business dealings. Our attitudes and perceptions of other people affect our relationships with them.

Perceptions can often be more important than reality. When taking part in a business meeting or negotiation, it can be useful to think about how you see yourself in the business relationship. Some people perceive themselves as being in the stronger position, others consider themselves as a weaker. This immediately creates a win or lose situation. If people put themselves and their opposite number somewhere between the two positions, they are more likely to work together to find common interests and to end up with a win situation in which both parties achieve something. This outcome not only leaves people feeling satisfied but also contributes towards a successful, long-term relationship. In most business dealings, it is important to work on relationships and the establishment of rapport. This includes thinking about common interests, rather than conflicting positions.

It is useful, therefore, in a discussion to consider your opposite number's approach and to consider the best way of dealing with that person. If you're dealing with a skeptical person who does not like to take risks, you will need to build up his trust and enable him to have confidence in you. If you are dealing with various people of different professional backgrounds, it may help to consider varying your approach or presentation so that it is more relevant and interesting to the particular person with whom you are dealing. For example, people with a financial background often respond well to graphic input and a linear approach. So if you can adapt your approach to your customer or business colleague, he or she is more likely to identify with you and therefore cooperate with you.

According to the passage, our attitudes and perceptions of other people

A.have nothing to do with business dealings.

B.exert some influence on our relationships with them.

C.change greatly when we fail to reach an agreement in a business dealing.

Chairman's Statement

Despite the appearance of a new competitor on the market, the company continued to grow and increase its market share throughout 2000. Partly in response to this new threat, but more importantly, as part of a strategy for growth, several key decisions were taken this year. The most significant new developments included a range of vitamin-rich drinks for children and low calorie diet drinks, which both proved very popular.

The company is still best known for its range of refreshing fruit drinks and, not surprisingly, these were our biggest sellers once more. There were two new additions to the range last year, Squish! and Liquid Sunshine, both of which have a distinctive Caribbean flavour. The first sales figures suggest that our expensive TV advertising campaign was very successful and that these products will soon be as popular as the rest of the fruit drink range.

Growth in the keep-fit and health markets meant our energy drinks did well in 2000. Sales of one brand, Booster were second only to fruit drinks in April. The strength of this particular market also explains the success of our new diet drinks.

There were, however, big differences in the performance of our older products. The company's oldest product, mineral water, continued to enjoy a healthy share of a very profitable mass market. It seems our customers are still happy to stay with the brand despite the increasing number of competitors' products. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of our Ice-T and Chocomania drinks. Sales showed an initial increase in the summer after we re-launched both products but customers soon bought other brands and total annual sales for both product ranges were disappointing.

The company also said goodbye to its own brand of cola, launched in 1998. After two unsuccessful years of trying to break into the huge cola market, 2000 looked like being another poor year. The company finally accepted that it had made a wrong decision and stopped production in September of that year.

What was the main reason the company decided to launch its new product ranges?

A.It faced increased competition.

B.It wanted to enter new markets.

C.It initiated a policy of expansion.

JAPAN INCREASES TRADE AND INVESTMENT IN ASIA

Japan has been the most powerful country in Asia, but it had little trade with the region until now. Now, Japan is doing more trade with Asia than with the rest of the world.

In 1994, Japan invested $ 7.7 billion in Asia. During the next few years, 75% of Japan's direct investment will be there. Japanese investment in the region is now $ 64 billion, as against US investment of $ 26 billion, or German investment of $ 7 billion.

Thailand expects new Japanese investment to reach $ 8 billion by 1998. Already, Japan controls 90% of Thailand's auto market. Questions 23-28

?Read the magazine article below about a new tape storage system.

?For questions (23-28), choose the correct answer.

?Mark one letter (A, B or C) .

TapeStore: A NEW TAPE STORAGE SYSTEM

TapeStore is a new kind of tape storage system which can store up to 6,000 computer tapes. No other tape storage system can hold as many computer tapes as TapeStore. The tapes look exactly like video cassettes. Many hundreds of data files can be stored on each tape, up to a maximum of 500 million bytes of data. If you stored the same amount of information on paper, you would need nearly 4.5 billion printed pages.

The machine is a tall black box with a mechanical arm. The machine is 2.5 metres high and 3 metres wide. This is how it works. Each tape has a code printed on it. You feed the code number into TapeStore, which then looks for the code. As soon as TapeStore locates the code, the arm reaches in and pulls out the tape.

The system is very fast. It takes the mechanical arm about 10 seconds to find the tape it is looking for. The machine then searches the tape to extract the required file, and this take Less than a minute. A human technician would have to locate and remove the tape by hand, and could take at least an hour to find the right file on the tape.

Some of the world's biggest companies, including banks, insurance companies, airlines, telephone companies, utilities and computer centres, have bought the system. They like it particularly because the system guarantees the security of their data.

TapeStore was originally developed in Canada and is now being marketed world-wide. In Europe alone, 750 have already been installed at a cost of 480,000 dollars each.

TapeStore is better than similar storage systems because

A.it can also take video cassettes.

B.it is much smaller.

C.it holds more information.

Questions 23-28

•Read the newspaper article below about business telecard.

•For each question (23-28), choose the correct answer.

•Mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer Sheet.

BUSINESS TELECARD INTERNATIONAL

You can use your Business Telecard International at any card phone in the UK. Here is some information about making international phone calls.

You can now phone almost any country in the world, although in some cases you can only call major cities. When you cannot make direct dialling calls, you can ask the international operator to help you. This is more expensive and takes more time, but it may be helpful if you want to speak to a particular person and no one else; in this case you should ask for a “person-to-person” call. Even more expensive is a reverse charge call where the person who receives the call pays.

If the international line is busy, you can reserve a call; explain the number you want and the operator will call you back when the line is free.

You can save money by calling outside office hours, e.g. early in the morning, late at night, and on Sundays. Remember that the time may be different in the country you are calling. International time is based on GMT (Greenwich Mean Time); London is on GMT and Moscow, for example, is 3 hours ahead. There is one problem; change to DST (Daylight Saving Time) for the Summer. In the UK, clocks are put forward one hour in Spring and put back in Autumn, and so London is actually one hour ahead of GMT in the Summer. If you are unsure about the time, the operator-will help you.

You can use your Business Telecard International for domestic calls as well, but there will be an additional charge over the standard rate.

What is the most expensive type of call?

A.Reverse charge call.

B.Through the operator.

C.Direct dial.

JOB INTERVIEWS

People looking for jobs usually send in a copy of their resume. This should be used as a basis for questions from the interviewer.

Interviewers find it helpful to ask candidates about the way they behaved in difficult situations in the past, for example with an angry customer. These questions allow applicants to explain how they acted in a real-life situation and, consequently, give clues as to how they would act again in similar sit nations. Candidates are likely to tell the truth as speaking from memory leaves little time to invent what happened On the other hand questions which ask candidates to imagine how they would behave in a situation which they have probably never met are of little or no value. This is because they only provide answers about how candidates would hope to behave, and this might not match the actions they would actually take.

In any interview candidates must be treated fairly, with questions asked in the same means and with no candidate's interview lasting considerably longer than any other's. Candidates should always be given the opportunity to ask questions throughout the interview.

Jan Godley, head of HR at Aspley Supermarkets says: A company needs staff not only who have the fight qualifications and experience, but also who are happy to fit in with the company's way of doing things. Our managers have to accept the idea that everyone working here is a colleague (managers are always known by their first names), and that spending time actually in the store with colleagues and customers, rather than in their offices, is part of the job. For management posts, we organize pre interview group exercises to measure team-working and leadership skills, sometimes along with activities to assess personal qualifies.'

'In all our interviews we take into account body language. It is natural for candidates to show signs of being nervous at an interview but most relax after a few minutes and become more confident. How ever, if the nervousness continues until the end of the interview, especially when difficult questions are asked, we would begin to have doubts about that candidate. Like all employers, we want to take on staff who are at ease with colleagues and customers so it is vital to watch the way candidates behave, as well as listen to what they have to say.'

Why is asking candidates to imagine their reactions to a situation unhelpful?

A.Candidates may have no experience of this situation.

B.Candidates may act differently in the real-life situation.

C.Candidates may never meet such a situation.

PROBLEMS IN DOING INTERNATIONAL TRADE

When companies do business overseas.they come in contact with people frOm different cultures. These individuals often speak different languages and have their own particular custom and manners. These differences can create problems. For example,in France, business meetings begin promptly at the designated time and everyone is expected to be there.Foreign business people who are tardy are often left outside to be kept waiting as a means of letting them know the importance of promptness.Unless one is aware of such unexpected behaviors.he may end up insulting the people with whom he hopes to establish trade relations.

A second traditional problem is that of monetary conversions. For example, if a transaction is conducted with Russia, payment may be made in rubles. Of course, this currency is of little value to the American firm. It is, therefore, necessary to convert the foreign currency to American dollars. How much are these Russian rubles worth in terms of dollars? This conversion rate is determined by every market, where the currencies of countries are bought and sold. Thus there is an established rate, although it will often fluctuate from day to day. For example, the ruble may be worth 0.75 on Monday and 0.72 on Tuesday because of an announced wheat shortage in Russia. In addition, there is the dilemma associated with converting at 0.72. Some financial institutions may be unwilling to pay this price, feeling that the ruble will sink much lower over the next week. As a result, conversion may finally come at 0.69. These "losses" must be accepted by the company as one of the costs of doing business overseas.

A third unique problem is trade barriers. For one reason or another, all countries impose trade barriers on certain goods crossing their borders. Some trade barriers are directly related to exports. For example, the United States permits strategic military material to be shipped abroad only after government permission has been obtained. Most trade barriers, however, are designed to restrict imports. Two of the most common import barriers are quotas and tariffs.

What is the relationship between culture and international trade?

A.Cultures in different countries may help establishing trade relations.

B.Companies can do business overseas without paying attention to different cultures

C.Misunderstanding in international trade may result from different cultures.

NOT JUST A SHOP!

In his yearly report, the chairman of a chain of retail outlets writes about the financial aspects of the business and describes the work which the company has done to benefit people in the areas where their shops are located.

It continues to be an important part of our company policy to be responsible for the health and welfare of people in the areas which we serve. In the past year, we have concentrated especially on education and training, and have invested over $ 5,000,000 in this and other areas ranging from the care of the old to the arts.

Let us look at these first. We have, as always, financed health research and care projects helping not only the old but children and the disabled too. We were especially pleased this year to provide alarms for disabled people who live alone and to run programmes which help children understand better the problems facing disabled people.

The Groundwork Foundation encourages young people in poor areas to improve their environment, while the Schools Prom concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London includes 20,000 children nationwide. Both of these were given financial help.

As mentioned above, in the last year we have been active in supporting a range of education projects. Two of our managers are now out of the company on one-year projects, training young people for work in the retail industry and improving the quality of the teaching they receive. In addition, we have started a programme of three-month schemes which our managerial staff are able to benefit from without having to take a long break from their jobs. Schools and universities have also benefited. A London Business School received $ 50,000 to develop a training programme for UK school staff, giving them the skills necessary to manage their own schools. A major University has received a promise of $100,000 over 5 years to fund a new teaching post in international retailing. This will allow 22 more students to study this subject each year. It is not only the companythat supports good work for other people. Members of staff themselves are encouraged to join the company Give as You Earn system, to give money to others, especially those organizations working for the benefit of the local area. In such cases the company often gives its support by making an additional contribution.

We look forward to committing even more money to these and other projects in the coming year.

In the past year, £ 5,000,000 was spent on

A.looking after old people.

B.all the company projects.

C.education and training.
