Slavery has played a significant role in the history of the U. S. It existed in all the En
glish mainland colonies and most of the Founding Fathers also had slaves, as did eight of the first 12 presidents.

Dutch traders brought 20 Africans to Jamestown, Virginia, as early as 1619, however, throughout the 17 th century the number of Africans in the English mainland colonies grew very slowly. At that time, colonists used two other sources of unfree labor: Native American slaves and European indentured servants.

During those years, every colony had some Native American slaves, but their number was limited. Indian men avoided performing agricultural labor, because they viewed it as women' s work, and colonists complained that they were too "haughty". The more important was that the settlers found it more convenient to sell Native Americans captured in war to planters in the Caribbean than to turn them into slaves, because they often resisted and it was not hard for the slaves to escape. Later, the policy of killing Indians or driving them away from white settlements was proposed and it contradicted with their widespread employment as slaves.

The other form. of labor was the white indentured servitude. Most indentured servants consisted of poor Europeans. Desiring to escape tough conditions in Europe and take advantage of fabled opportunities in America, they traded three to seven years of their labor in exchange for the transatlantic passage. At first, it was mainly English who were the white indentured servitude but later increasingly Irish, Welsh, and German joined. They were essentially temporary slaves and most of them served as agricultural workers although some, especially in the North, were taught skilled trades. During the 17th century, they performed most of heavy labor in the Southern colonies and also consisted of the bulk of immigrants to those colonies.

At the end of the 17 th century, in order to meet the labor need, landowners in America turned to African slaves. During the late 17th and 18th centuries, thanks to the dominant position of England in terms of naval superiority, English traders (some of whom lived in English America) transported millions of Africans across the Atlantic. And the transatlantic slave trade produced one of the largest forced migrations in history, blacks (the great majority of whom were slaves) increasing from about 7 percent of the American population in 1680 to more than 40 percent by the middle of the 18th century.

Which of the following was true of the slavery in America?

A.The colonists sold African Americans to planters in the Caribbean.

B.Native American slaves performed agricultural labor.

C.During the 17th century, the white indentured servitude was the main labor in the Southern colonies.

D.It was at the end of the 17th century that African people began to be brought to America.

听力原文: The Civil War came about as a result of many differences between the North and the South. The differences had their beginnings in the early 1800s. Tensions continued to grow for several decades. When the war began in 1861, most American believed the conflict would not last long. Instead, it stretched into four years of bloody fight. In the end, more Americans died in the Civil War than in any war the nation had fought.

The disagreements between the North and the South centered on the following five issues: slavery, tariffs, taxes, political power in the House of Representative, and political power in the Senate. People in the North had strong feelings about each of these issues. So did the people in the South. Each side had reasons for the way it felt.

Many people in the North did not believe in slavery. They thought the people of the South should not own slaves. Although some southerners opposed slavery, most felt they needed slaves to raise cotton and tobacco, which were the pillar economy. On the other hand, the North' s economy was based on manufacturing industry not plantation agriculture. The northern ers opposed slavery in the South since they had not enough people to work in their factories and wanted to get human resources. In the end the North won the war and the Union was saved.

(30)

A.In the early 1800s.

B.Several decades after its break.

C.In 1861.

D.In 1865.

People who sleep for more than eight hours a night do not live as long as those who sleep for six hours, according to the biggest study yet into sleep patterns and mortality

Scientists have no explanation for the findings and do not know if they mean people who like a lie-in (睡懒觉) can extend their lives by sleeping less.

Although it is a common belief that sleeping for at least eight hours a night is vital for health and well-being, the six-year study involving more than 1.1 million Americans older than 30 found that those who slept for less than eight hours were far from doing themselves any long-term harm.

"Individuals who now average 6.5 hours of sleep a night can be reassured that this is a safe amount of sleep. From a health standpoint, there is no reason to sleep longer, said Daniel Kripke, a professor of psychiatry (精神病学) at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Kripke said, "We don't know if long sleep periods lead to death. Additional studies are needed to determine if setting your alarm clock earlier will actually improve. The scientists, who were funded by the American Cancer Society, found that the best survival rates were among the men and women who slept for seven hours a night. Those who slept for eight hours were 12 per cent more likely to die during the six-year period of the study, when other factors such as diet and smoking were taken into account.

Even those who spent a mere five hours a night in bed lived longer than those who slept eight or more hours. However, an increasing death rate was found among those who slept for less than five hours.

Dr. Kripke said, "Previous sleep studies have indicated that both short- and long-duration (持续时间) sleep had higher mortality rates. However, none of those studies were large enough to distinguish the difference between seven and eight hours a night, until now."

The Family

The structure of a family takes different forms around the world and even in the same society.
The family&39;s form. changes as it adapts to changing social and economic influences. Until recently, the most common form. in North America was the nuclear family, consisting of a married couple with their minor children. The nuclear family is an independent unit. It must be prepared to fend for itself. Individual family members strongly depend on one another. There is little help from outside the family in emergencies. Elderly relatives of a nuclear family are cared for only if it is possible for the family to do so. In North America, the elderly often do not live with the family; they live in retirement communities and nursing homes.
There are many parallels between the nuclear family in industrial societies, such as North America, and of families in societies such as that of the Inuits, who live in harsh environments. The nuclear family structure is well adapted to a life of mobility. In harsh conditions, mobility allows the family to hunt for food. For North Americans, the hunt for jobs and improved social status also requires mobility.
The nuclear family was not always the North American standard. In a more agrarian time, the small nuclear family was usually part of a larger extended family. This might have included grandparents, mother and father, brothers and sisters, uncles, aunts, and cousins. In North America today, there is a dramatic rise in the number of single-parent households. Twice as many households in the United States are headed by divorced, separated, or never-married individuals as are comprised of nuclear families. The structure of the family, not just in North America, but throughout the world, continues to change as it adapts to changing conditions.

Another good title for this passage would be__________. 查看材料

A.What Makes a Family?

B.The Life of the Inuits

C.Living with Hardship

D.The Failure of the Nuclear Family

Political controversy(争论)about the public-land policy of the United States began with the American Revolution. In fact, even before independence from Britain was won, it became clear that resolving the dilemmas(困境)surrounding the public domain might prove necessary to preserve the Union itself.

At the peace negotiations with Britain, Americans demanded, and got a western boundary at the Mississippi River. Thus the new nation secured for its birthright a vast internal empire rich in agricultural and mineral resources. But under their colonial charters(契约) ,seven states--Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia--claimed portions of the western wilderness. Virginia's claim was the largest, stretching north and west to encompass the later states of Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. The language of the charters was vague and their validity question able, but during the war Virginia reinforced its title by sponsoring Colonel George Rogers Clark's 1778 expedition to Vincennes and Kaskaskia, which strengthened America's trans Appalachian pretensions(要求,权利)at the peace table.

The six states holding no claim to the transmountain (在山那边的)region doubted whether a confederacy in which territory was so unevenly apportioned would turely prove what it claimed to be a union to equals. Already New Jersey, Delaware, Rhode Island, and Maryland were among the smallest and least populous of the states. While they levied(征收) heavy taxes to repay state war debts, their larger neighbors might retire debts out of land sale proceeds.

With which of the following topics is the passage primarily concerned?

A.A controversial public-land policy.

B.How independence from Britain was won.

C.The land holdings of Massachusetts.

D.How New Jersey developed its western land.

听力原文: The ten years of the 1960s was a period of profound change in many parts of the world. In the United States, beginning with the Civil Rights Movement in the early 1960s,and extending through the Vietnam War,millions of Americans began to challenge established authority. These movements were initially political.Young Americans demanded that governmental policies in race relations and international relations correspond to the ideals of justice contained in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.By the end of the decade, however, challenges to authority were carried far beyond political issues and were directed at the social order and deeply rooted cultural patterns of the country.

The generation that came of age in the 1960s,the Baby Boom generation, sought change in almost every aspect of life in the United States. For example, they experimented with cooperative economic institutions and communal living arrangements, broke sexual taboos, altered the process of education, explored non-Western spiritual traditions, developed a strong respect for the environment, and transformed popular culture. As a whole, these changes stood for a different set of cultural values that provided a thorough critique of American society as it existed at that time.Although many“alternative lifestyles”were short-lived,cultural changes that began in that period have had a continuing effect on much of American life, particularly in attitudes toward male-female relations.

All cultures are complex. They are a combination of closely related patterns of social interaction. As a result, changes in an important aspect of a particular culture will usually produce changes throughout the society. The Women's Movement that began in the United States during the 1960s is a typical example of this phenomenon. From the beginning, the Women's Movement was influenced by cultural changes that had occurred earlier in the decade. The Civil Rights Movement for racial equality and the development of the birth control pill were particularly important—the Civil Rights Movement because women involved in the effort for racial justice began to see themselves as victims of social injustice, and the birth control pill because it gave women reliable control over reproduction.

Social, economic, and legal equality and reproductive rights continue to be the basic principles of the Women's Movement. As some of these goals have been achieved, major changes have occurred in broader cultural patterns such as the economy and the family. At the present time, most of American women are employed.Employment is no longer confined to such traditional female occupations as teacher, nurse,or secretary.Women are now found in every occupation and at all levels of responsibility and authority.Participation in the economy has given many women an independence that has allowed them to choose whether, when, and how to form. a family.Working women within families now are part of an economic partnership with men in which both adults provide support for the family unit and are responsible for the quality of life.

The Women's Movement has affected the relationship between men and women in the family in other ways as well.Women have challenged traditional sex roles in the household.Men are now expected to participate in child-raising and domestic activities to a much greater extent than in the past.Childbearing is now a matter of family choice, with women having the final decision in family planning.

All of these cultural changes are strengthened in both the media and in the educational system.Children are growing up with self-images and expectations far
