听力原文: Heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump as much blood as the
body needs. This condition can begin with a heart attack or high blood pressure. The heart becomes weakened. Over time, it loses the ability to pump blood. A sign of heart failure is breathing difficulty. But people often mistake that for just a sign of aging.

In the United States, doctors say about five million people have this major cause of sickness and death. They say heart failure is the leading cause of hospital treatment for people aged sixty-five and older. But these doctors say the problem of heart failure has yet to be fully investigated.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota did a study of the last twenty years. They expected to find that heart failure has become more common. Hospital admissions for heart failure have increased. But they found that the percentage of the population developing heart failure has not changed. Instead, survival rates have improved.

Which one of the following is a sign of heart failure?

A.Breathing difficulties.

B.High blood pressure.

C.Headache.

D.High body temprature.

听力原文: Many thousands of years ago, people lived only in hot countries. They did not li
ve in cold countries because they could not keep warm. At first men did not know how to make a fire. Sometimes lightning hit a forest and started a fire. The people took some of this fire to make a fire near their homes. A fire was very important for three reasons. It kept them warm. It frightened wild animals, because they did not attack when they saw a fire. And then another thing was discovered: if you cook food, it tastes much better!

Men still did not know how to make a fire. When they had a fire they did not let it stop burning. If it went out, they could not start it again. They had to wait for lightning to start another fire! Sometimes they had to wait for years.

Later they discovered how to make a fire. If you rub pieces of wood together, they become hot and burn. You have to rub very fast! One way of doing it is to make a little hole in a piece of wood. Pieces of wood or dry leaves are put into the hole. Then you put the end of a stick into the hole. You rub the stick between your hands. This makes it turn very quickly. The end in the hole becomes very hot. The small pieces of wood and dry leaves begin to burn.

Another way of making a fire is to knock two stones together. This makes a spark. You can use this spark to start a fire. Nowadays we have matches. We can carry them in our pockets and make a fire when we want to. We also have cigarette lighters. They are, perhaps, handier and more useful than matches. There are, of course, other advanced methods of making a fire. Many people use heaters to keep warm. Oil heaters bum oil. Gas heaters burn gas. Electric heaters use electricity. We also use oil, gas and electricity for cooking.

How was fire first made?

A.Lightning hit a forest and started a fire.

B.People rubbed two pieces of wood together to make a fire.

C.People knock two pieces of stone together to make a fire.

D.People rubbed a stick between their hands to make a fire.

根据下列短文,补全 46~50 题。

Why do People Shrink?

Did you ever see the movie Honey, I shrunk the kids? It's about a wacky(乖僻的) dad (who's also a scientist) who accidentally(偶然的) shrinks his kids with his homemade miniaturizing(使小型化) invention. Oops! The kids spend the rest of the movie as tiny people who are barely visible while trying to get back to their normal size.

_________ (1)It takes place over years and may add up to only one inch or so off of their adult height (maybe a little more, maybe less), and this kind of shrinking can't be magically reversed, although there are things that can be done to stop it or slow it down. But why does shrinking happen at all?

_________(2).As people get older, they generally lose some muscle and fat from their bodies as part of the natural aging process. Gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground) take hold, and the bones in the spine, called vertebrae(椎骨), may break down or degenerate, and start to collapse into one another. _________ (3).But perhaps the most common reason why some older people shrink is because of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis(骨质疏松症) occurs when too much spongy(海绵) bone tissue (which is found inside of most bones) is broken down and not enough new bone material is made. _________ (4).Bones become smaller and weaker and can easily break if someone with osteoporosis is injured. Older people –especially women, who generally have smaller and lighter bones to begin with-are more likely to develop osteoporosis. As years go by, a person with osteoporosis shrinks a little bit.

Did you know that every day you do a shrinking act? You aren't as tall at the end of the day as you are at the beginning. _________ (5).Don't worry, though. Once you get a good night's rest, your body recovers, and the next morning, you're standing tall again.

Older adults can add to the educational resources at the university by bringing with them a lot of valuable experience. Their presence on campus helps break some long believes of aging. 听力原文: Younger people and older people do not always agree with each other. They sometimes have different ideas about life, work and play. But in one special program in New York Slate, adults and teenagers live together in peace. Each summer, 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special workgroup. Everyone works several hours each day. The aim is not only to keep busy but to find meaning and enjoyment in work. Some teenagers work in the woods or on the farms near the village, Some learn to make furniture and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills.

There are several free hours every day. And people are free on weekends, too. During the free hours some teenagers learn photography or painting. Others sit around talking or singing, Each teenager has his own way to spend the free time.

It is necessary to make rules when people live together. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the roles together. When someone breaks the rule, the group will discuss the problem. They will ask "Why did it happen?", "What should we do about it?"

After the program, one of the teenagers told us that, "You stop thinking only about yourself. You begin to think about the whole group. That's what I've learnt from this program."

How long will the adults and teenagers in this program live together?

A.Five weeks.

B.Six weeks.

C.Seven weeks.

D.Eight weeks.
