第三节 短文理解2

阅读下列短文,从[A]、[B]、[C]三个选项中选择一个正确答案。

St. Martin’s Day is a holiday in Holland. St. Martin was a man who did kind things for many people in need. One cold winter day he was walking home. He wore a coat to keep warm and had a small piece of bread to eat. Then he saw a stranger on the side of the road. The man sat on the ground and he was hungry and had no home. St. Martin took out his knife and cut his coat into two. He gave the man half of his warm coat. Then he gave the man haft of his bread.

Nancy was a schoolgirl in Holland. One St. Martin's day, she rode her bicycle with her classmates after school. When she got home, she said goodbye to her classmates and went into her yard. As she parked her bike, she heard a noise in the grass. She jumped back suddenly. At her feet was a small gray homeless cat. "That old cat keeps scaring me!" she complained as she walked into the room. "It won't hurt you, " said her father.

She was angry about the cat but she could not be unhappy for long. It was St. Martin's Day. "Who was St. Martin anyway?" Nancy asked. Father told her the story of St. Martin. Nancy was touched (感动) by the story. She put a piece of bread in her bag and went into the yard.

Nancy heard the noise again. "You wait a minute!" she called as she ran after the cat. She caught it and picked it up. She opened her bag. Taking out a piece of bread, she offered half to the cat. The cat hungrily ate the bread. "May we make a box for it to sleep in?" Nancy asked her father. "Sure, "said her father.

Britain has laws to make sure that women have the same opportunities as men in education,
jobs and training. But it's still unusual to women doing dirty or heavy jobs.

Nancy Florey is a car maintenance engineer in London. She used to be a secretary. Jessica Human, a journalist with The Observer, a Sunday newspaper, asked her why she wanted to work with cars.

"My first reason was independence," she said. "I also wanted to use my hands, and I like learning about how things work. Many people refer to have a woman repair their cars, too. "

Nancy didn't find it easy to become a car maintenance engineer. She went to a Government Skill Center-a special sort of college where people can learn a new job-for twenty weeks. "For ten weeks I was the only woman among four hundred men, and some of them were rude to me, just because of my sex. It was also very tiring -from 8 in the morning to 5 at night, with only 30 minutes for lunch."

Now Nancy works freelance-that is, she's self-employed, working for herself and not for a garage or a company.

Jessica Human also spoke to Marina, who works as a general builder in Sheffield, an industrial town in the north of England. Like Nancy, Marina used to be a secretary. "I didn't enjoy it at all," she said, "I wanted to do more practical work, and I wanted to be self- employed."

Marina joined a women's building co-operative, and she learnt her job from other people and from experience. However, many of the women in her group have been specially trained. Most of the jobs they do are improvements to buildings and general repairs.

"People often say, 'Oh, women aren't strong enough,' but I don't think strength is important," said Marina. "The important thing is to get used to doing a different sort of work."

Marina would like more women to come into the building industry. "Everything built at the moment is a product of man's world, ff women become builders, they will be able to understand the production of their houses and their towns."

According to the passage, what do British laws ensure women?

A.They ensure that women get higher pay than men.

B.They ensure that women enjoy more freedom than men.

C.They ensure that women do whatever they like to do.

D.They ensure that women have equal chances with men in education and work.

听力原文:M: How are your new neighbors, Nancy?

W: They seem nice enough, but they have a son who's driving me crazy.

M: What do you mean?

W: He comes home every night around 10 with his car windows rolled down and radio blaring. It stops as soon as he turns the car off. But by then Brian and Lisa axe wide awake.

M: Oh, no.

W: Oh, yes. Sometimes it takes us till mid-night just to get them settled down again.

M: Have you tried talking to them?

W: We haven't even really met them yet except to say a quick hello. I hate to get off ou the wrong foot.

M: You are not going to like them when you do meet them if you keep on complaining.

W: I know, but I fed stupid complaining. It's not as though he is blasting his stereo all night.

M: You said yourself it is driving you crazy.

W: Well, you know how early I have to get up to be here at the office. I'm just not getting enough sleep and neither are the kids. They're so irritable when I get home in the afternoon.

M: Maybe you could go over sometime with a little gift: a plant for the yard or something. Then you could ask about their son whether they have any other children and they'll be sure to ask about yours.

W: Yeah, and then what?

M: Than you could mention that the hardest thing at this stage is getting your kids to get sleep at night?

W: And keeping them asleep.

M: That's the idea. And you should do it soon. The longer you wait, the harder it'll be to do politely.
