听力原文: Recently the term "health" has come to have a wider meaning than it used to. It no longer means just the absence of illness. Today, health means the well-being of your body, your mind and your relationships with other people. This new concept of health is closely related to another term--quality of life. Quality of life is the degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life.

Why has the emphasis of health shifted from the absence of disease to a broader focus on the quality of a person's life? One reason for this has to do with the length and conditions of life that people can now expect. Medical advances have made it possible for people today to live longer, healthier lives. Imagine for a moment that you were born in the year 1900;you could have expected on average to live until about the age of 47. In contrast, if you were born in the year 1999, you could expect to live to the age of 75 or be older.

(30)

A.Different interpretations of the term “health.”

B.Improving the quality of life

C.The importance of health to quality living.

D.People's expectations of a long and healthy life.

听力原文: A calendar is a kind of chart that is used to keep tracks of days, months, and years. The ancient calendars of China were sometimes divided into 12-year cycles. Each year in the 12-year cycle had the name of an animal. There were twelve animals that were used to name the 12 years of the cycle. These animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. You can figure out the animal for any year if you remember the animals' names in this order.

There were two common areas of significance that the Chinese calendar was used in. One area of its use was in selecting a marriage partner. For example, a woman who was born in the year of the dog was perfectly suited to a man who was born in the year of the rabbit. Another use for the calendar was in selecting a profession. For example, a person born in the year of the dragon might be good for the medical profession, but not for the legal profession.

(30)

A.A kind of chart used to keep track of days, months and years.

B.A kind of book used to express days of months.

C.A list of the animal's names.

D.A list of holidays.

听力原文: Were you the first or the last child in you family? Or were you a middle or an only child? Some people think it matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means. Some people say that oldest children are smart and strongwilled. They are very likely to be successful. The reason for this is simple: parents have a lot of time for their first child. They give him or her a lot of attention. So this child is likely to do well. An only child will succeed for the same reason. What happens to the other children in the family? Middle children don't get so much attention, so they don't feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child, though, often gets special treatment. He or she is the baby. Often this child grows up to be funny and charming. Do you believe this idea of birth order too? A recent study saw things quite differently. The study found that first children believed in family rules. They didn't take many chances in their lives. They usually followed orders. Rules didn't mean as much to later children in the family. They went out and followed their own ideas. They took chances and they often did better in life.

(26)

A.They strongly believe in family rules.

B.They are very likely to succeed in life.

C.They tend to take responsibility for themselves.

D.They are in the habit of obeying their parents.

听力原文: Good morning, students. I hope you have read the two books about speech. Today's lecture deals with the presence of the unusually large deaf population that existed on the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard for about three centuries. From the settlement of the islands in the 1640s to the 20th century, people there, who were descended from only 25 or 30 original families, married mainly other residents of the island. They formed a highly inbred group, setting an example of the genetic patterns for the inheritance of deafness. Indeed in the late 18th century one out of every 25 people in one village on the island was born deaf, and the island as a whole had a deafness rate at least 17 times greater than that of the rest of the United States. Even Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone and a prominent investigator into hearing loss, visited Martha's Vineyard to study the population. But because the principles of genetics and inheritance were still unknown, he was not able to explain the patterns of deafness and why a deaf parent did not always have deaf children. In the 20th century, the local population began to marry people off the island and the rate of deafness started to fall.

(33)

A.At the library.

B.In a lecture hall.

C.On Martha's Vineyard.

D.At a telephone laboratory.
