听力原文:Speaker 1

I think the worst meeting I ever attended was one where there was an awful lot of talk in fact the chairperson bent over backwards to make sure everyone had their say, and clearly a lot of people felt strongly about the proposal on the table. We seemed to be pretty evenly divided on it, so it really needed a vote, but the chair chose to 'take the feeling of the meeting' instead, and I felt he was unduly influenced by the opinions of one or two very vocal people. And it was a pretty important matter, too, because our design department had come up with a range of materials that would entail radically changing the manufacturing process. We agreed to go ahead with it, but we were taking a real risk.

Speaker 2

Well, we once had a meeting about how to get raw materials exactly when we needed them: you see, sometimes they'd come in very soon after we'd placed an order, and would fill all our storage space, and at other times production would have to stop because we'd run out of what we needed. I reckoned that we should renegotiate the agreement we had with the company concerned, to build in a time-scale, And that was what we decided to do, but it turned out that in fact they weren't really interested, because in their terms we were too small a customer Oddly enough, one of our purchasing assistants knew about this, but hadn't been invited to the meeting. Still, it helped us when we drew up the agreement with o different firm,

Speaker 3

The company had recently been taken over, and we were selling in overseas markets for the first time. A new department was set up, which a number of people moved into from domestic sales. But they simply weren't up to the new demands. For instance, they weren't aware of cultural differences in how people negotiate, and as a result, our foreign sales just weren't happening. So we had a meeting about how to get the input we needed, and the outcome was that we decided to find a company that could provide an in-house seminar for us. The trouble was, some people had made up their minds about the best method before the meeting and though it was all very polite, they just ignored what the others said. Honestly, I was pretty annoyed,

Speaker 4

I wish everyone who chaired a meeting was trained in how to do iL For one thing, they really ought to make sure everyone gets the chance to say what they think, because otherwise people start wondering if there's any point in having a meeting, and that can be bad for morale. I was once in a project group, and we had a meeting to consider improvements to the way one particular division was structured, Well, the Chief Executive decided to attend, which wasn't a good idea, because the project leader, who was chairing the meeting, kept asking the CE what he thought, so some people more or less gave up, It's not that any of the project group particularly disagreed with the decisions, but they felt their opinions weren't being taken seriously.

Speaker 5

Our board of directors was in talks with one of our competitors about amalgamating, and the Managing Director called a meeting of the workforce to explain the implications. He started by saying that the synergies in the new relationship would mean we could cut costs, particularly in bulk purchasing of supplies, and anyone whose job disappeared would be offered retraining, But people didn't believe him and thought there would be mass redundancies. It got completely out of hand. Everyone was determined to have their say, people were shouting, and eventually the MD gave up and walked out. It was the most chaotic meeting I've ever attended, but at least we all felt a bit better for having let off steam! In fact demand for our products rose, and nobody was laid off after all,

听力原文: As the car industry develops, traffic accidents have become as familiar as the c
ommon cold. Yet their cause and control remain a serious problem that is difficult to solve.

Experts have long recognized that this discouraging problem has multiple causes. At the very least it is a problem that involves three factors: the driver, the vehicle and the roadway. If all drivers exercised good judgment at all times, there would be few accidents. But this is rather like saying that if all people were honest, there would be no crime. Improved design has helped to make highways much safer. But the total of accidents continues to rise because of human failure and an enormous increase in the number of automobiles on the road. Attention is now turning increasingly to the third factor of the accident, that is, the car itself. Since people assume that the accidents are bound to occur, they want to know how cars can be built better to protect the drivers.

What does the speaker think are the causes of automobile accidents?

A.The causes are very complicated.

B.The causes are obvious.

C.The causes are familiar.

D.The causes are not well understood.

听力原文: Speaker One

Man: This is a great chance and just what this region needs. The unemployment here has been very bad and we've been very lucky to be chosen for this new factory. And this position would be a step-up for me... a real advancement, so to speak. It could lead to me having my own department one day and a senior position. Especially if I pass the certificate in Human Resources which I've almost finished. If I'm appointed, I'd have to draw up a list of everyone who's applied to the company and then help with the selection process. It helps knowing the area and I've already got quite a few contacts and I told them that all of my experience has been working with people.

Speaker Two

Woman: I didn't apply for this job. They wrote and asked me to come for an informal interview. It must have been because I've had considerable experience with the accounting system they use and I've done a lot of work on pricing and costing of new lines at a high level. They'd like me to start to work very soon. It's important to be in at the beginning when you deal with the money side, to make sure everyone stays within the budget constraints which you decide. But I'm not really sure about it at all. I've got a good job now and I'm happy where I am and not really looking for a change. It needs a lot of thought as they are a good company. Well, I've got the weekend ahead to think about everything.

Speaker Three

Man: Yes, I know a lot about this company. They are very good and I've had contact with them before, at various trade shows and advertising conferences in this country. It would be good to work for them. I would be doing the same sort of thing, except on a bigger scale. It's not a promotion or anything. The same grade and money but.., more presentations and a lot of consumer research. Although I like my present job, this would give me an opportunity to get around a bit more, to visit their overseas offices. In fact they are launching a big campaign soon in ten different countries and they'd like me to coordinate some of it. It would be a great chance and I accept it.

Speaker Four

Woman: It's going to be a successful venture. I can feel it and I'd really like to be involved. But I expect there were a lot of very well qualified applicants, what with all the word processing courses around and the number of computers in people's homes. But I've got all the keyboard skills. I'm fast and accurate and I can spell well. I've been doing the job for over ten years, since the days of typewriters. This is the same job but I think it would be interesting.., and I like the area. I'd really enjoy living here. Well, you can only hope. You never can tell with interviews.

Speaker Five

Man: Yes, indeed. I was very impressed and I must say that... Well, perhaps it's best not to say anything. But I do feel confident about it. There were some interesting questions, but my line of work is very technical so you know it or you don't. It's not as simple as people think. It's not just a question of checking the product at the end of a conveyor belt but setting up a continuous system which monitors every aspect of the production process. This is the only way to get an end product without fault. I hope I get the job.

听力短文2:I have learnt many languages, but I’m not mastered them the way the professional interpreter or translator has。

I have learnt many languages, but I’m not mastered them the way the professional interpreter or translator has。 Still, they have open doors for me。 They have allowed me the opportunity to seek jobs in international contexts and help me get those jobs。 Like many people who have lived overseas for a while, I simply got crazy about it。 I can’t image living my professional or social life without international interactions。 Since 1977, I have spent much more time abroad than in the United States。 I like going to new places, eating new foods and experiencing new cultures。 If you can speak the language, it’s easier to get to know the country and its people。 If I had the time and money。 I would live for a year in as many countries as possible。 Beyond my career, my facility with languages has given me a few rare opportunities。 Once, just after I returned my year in Vienna。 I was asked to translate for a German judge at Olympic level horse event and learned a lot about the sport。

In Japan, once when I was in the studio audience of a TV cooking show, I was asked to go up on the stage and taste the beef dish that was being prepared and tell what I thought。 They asked” Was it as good as American beef?” It was very exciting for me to be on Japanese TV, speaking in Japanese about how delicious the beef was。

Question 20 What does the speaker say about many people who have lived overseas for a while?

Learning how to write is like taking a course in public speaking. I ’d ask whether anyone
in class had ever taken such a course. Invariably a few hands would go up.

“What did you learn in that course?” I’d ask.

“Well, the main thing was learning how to face an audience, not to be inhibited (拘谨;抑制), not to be nervous, ”

Exactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowadays, you don’t hear much about grammar and vocabulary. Instead, you’re taught how not to be afraid or embarrassed, how to speak without a prepared script, how to reach out to the live audience before you. Public speaking is a matter of overcoming your longstanding nervous inhibitions.

It is the same in writing. The point of the whole thing is to overcome your nervous inhibi- tions, to break through the invisible barrier that separates you from the person who’ll read what y- ou wrote. You must learn to sit in front of your typewriter or dictating machine and reach out to the person at the other end of the line.

Of course, in public speaking, with the audience right in front of you, the problem is easier. Y ou can look at them and talk to them directly. In writing, you ’re alone. It needs an effort of your experience or imagination to take hold of that other person and talk to him or her. But that effort is necessary or at least it’s necessary until you’ve reached the point when you quite naturally and unconsciously “talk on paper.”

The main task of a public speech course is to ________.

A.teach spoken-language experience

B.teach how to use gestures to assist speech

C.help the learners overcome nervousness

D.teach how to control the volume of the speaker’s voice

Learning how to write is similar to learning how to speak in public in that a writer should ___________.A.overcome his or her nervousness in the first place

B.watch his or her grammar and vocabulary

C.collect a lot of data before writing

D.take hold of a reader and talk to him or her before writing

In the author’s opinion_________.A.writing needs more experience and skill than public speaking

B.both writing and public speaking require effort

C.writing is imaginative

D.public speaking is not so natural as writing

Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Not many students feel the need to learn public speaking

B.Training is necessary before you can speak with script

C.In public speaking, the audience are more nervous than the speaker

D.Writing is just like making a public speech on paper

This selection is mainly about learning how to _______.A.make a public speech

B.talk on paper

C.behave properly in public speech

D.express strong emotion on paper
