Domestic violence is a serious crime causing serious social problems. It is violence at ho
me, usually the husband beating his wife or the father beating his children. The victims, the wife and the children, suffer both physically and spiritually. Children develop trauma as a result of exposure to domestic violence. They also develop wet-bedding problems, too.

The speaker was regularly beaten up by her former husband and often had black eyes and bruises on her body. She suffered terribly and finally got divorced. Many women feel guilty and assume that they are to blame because they cannot understand how the person they love has changed into such a terrifying person. The first possible reason for the domestic violence is that the husband is not happy with the marriage. The second one may be that he is dissatisfied with his job. The third will probably be that he has bad relationships with other people. Fourth, his unemployment may also contribute to "domestic violence". Last but not least, he may be off- balanced because of dissatisfaction with society as a whole.

Different people may offer different solutions to the problems. Some say that we had better start a kind of special service educating abusive husbands or fathers and helping them to overcome psychological barriers in their life. Some suggest that the wife should try very hard to show understanding for her husband while at the same time make him know that he must respect women's rights. They should try hard to help their husbands to adapt to the changing world around them. Many others advocate that the abusive husband or father should be punished.

We are all more aware of domestic violence these days. It is impossible to assess whether the incidence of violence has increased or whether it is simply that people are more willing to talk about it than they were in the past. Victims do not, however, find it easy enough to bring their problems out into the open. But they must, not only for themselves but also for their children and even for their abusive partners.

According to the passage who are the frequent victims of domestic violence?

A.Parents.

B.Husbands and children.

C.Wives and children.

D.Old people.

Today men are facing new expectations and new choices about their commitments to society,
family, and work. No longer what goals they should pursue, much less how they should pursue them, many men have found themselves in a no-man's land, searching for new meanings and definitions of maturity. In interviews I conducted with 138 men from diverse social and economic background. 36 percent defined their family and work commitments in terms of primary breadwinning, and 30 percent chose to eschew parenthood or to avoid involvement with children they had brought into the world.

However, about 33 percent had moved toward more rather than less family involvement over the course of their lives. These men develop an outlook on parenthood that included caretaking as well as economic support. They represent a growing group of fathers, most of whom arc married to work-committed women and have an egalitarian approach toward marriage and family commitments. Such men ,whom I call "involved fathers", are demonstrating a capacity, a willingness, and an enthusiasm for parenting not seen in their fathers' and grandfathers' generations.

An involved lather, however, is not necessarily an equal father. Though men's domestic participation has increased in recent year, his involvement has not kept in pace with women's rapidly rising commitment to paid employment. A persistent" housework gap" has left most women with more work and less leisure time than their male counterparts.

It may be tempting to focus on the fact that, even among men who support equality, their involvement as fathers remains a far distance from what most women want and most children need. Yet it is also important to acknowledge how far and how fast many men have moved toward a pattern that not long ago virtually all men considered anathema. One recent survey found that 73 percent of a group of randomly selected fathers agreed that "their families are the most important facet of their lives"; 87 percent agreed that "dad is as vital as mom in raising kids. "The cballenge is to create the social and cultural arrangements that would enable men to uphold these beliefs more easily.

Paragraph 1 implies that______.

A.men are at loss to what roles they should play

B.men realize that they've got into a place that no one had been before

C.men want to change the meanings and definitions of adulthood

D.men meet with great pressure from the society

By 2010, half the recoverable material in Britain's dustbins will be recycled -- that, at
least, was the target set by Chris Patten, Secretary of State for the Environment. But he gave no clues as to how Britain should go about achieving it. While recycling enthusiasts debate the relative merits of different collection systems, it will largely be new technology, and the opening up of new markets, that makes Patten's target attainable: a recycling scheme is successful only if manufacturers use the recovered materials in new products that people want to buy.

The first question is how best to separate clean element -- glass containers, plastics, and some paper and metal containers that is relatively clean when discarded -- from mixed refuse. This clean element is the main target for Britain's recyclers. The method of collection is important because manufacturers will not reuse collected material unless it is clean and available in sufficient quantities. A bewildering assortment of different collection schemes operates in the rest of Europe, and pilot schemes are now under way in many British cities.

A realistic target for recycling mixed refuse is somewhere between 15 and 25 percent by weight, according to researchers at the Department of Trade and Industry's Laboratory. Statistics compiled by researchers at the University of East Anglia show that Britain could almost halve(减半)the total weight of domestic waste going to landfill by a combination of "collect" schemes(such as doorstep collections for newspapers), "bring" schemes(such as bottle banks)and plants for extracting metals.

This estimate makes two important 'assumptions. One is that the government will bring in legislation to encourage the creation of markets for products made from recycled materials, especially glass, paper an plastics. The other is that industry will continue to introduce new technology that will improve both the products and the techniques used to separate recoverable materials from mixed refuse.

Which of the following can serve as a proper title for the passage?

A.An Impossible Target

B.Government Assumptions

C.Recycling Britain

D.Categories of Britain's Waste

听力原文: Major cultural differences in selling techniques include the relationship between the salesman and the customer. As an expert advises his colleagues, "In many foreign countries, personal relationships are more important than company regulations and products. Developing relationships takes time, but it is decisive to the selling process."

International trade fairs have become extremely important places for conducting business, yet very few domestic sales organizations understand how to take advantage of the opportunities that these shows present. Unlike U.S. trade shows, at which there is an open display of one's goods and services and a lot of looking but not buying, a European trade show is relatively closed and only open to those who are there to conduct business.

In some societies, the first thing people care about is quality; in other societies, the first thing on a customer's mind is the cost; and in other countries, the concern is style. The color, size, and quantity of items need to be considered in packaging any product. The color blue is for funerals in some countries, smaller items are preferred over large items, and the number of items in a package can be critical. For example, a golf ball company packaged their golf balls in groups of four and then sent 50,000 units to their Asian distributor who promptly sent them all back, advising the company to package the golf balls again in packages of three. In many of the countries where the golf balls were to be sent, the number four was considered as being equal to death whereas the number three is the symbol of long life.

(30)

A.Get down to business first.

B.Develop relationships.

C.Call each potential customer.

D.Hold trade fairs.
