听力原文:W: Hi, Mike.

M: Hi. I'm surprised to see you on the city bus. Why not drive your car?

W: (23) I've been thinking about the environment lately. If we all use public transportation when we could, the air will be much cleaner.

M: Right. But the bus isn't exactly pollution free.

W: True. But they'll be running a lot cleaner soon. We were just talking about that in my environmental engineering class.

M: What's the city going to do? Install pollution filters of some sort on their buses?

W: They could, but those filters make the engines work harder and really cut down on fuel efficiency. Instead they found a way to make their engines more efficient.

M: How?

W: (24) Well, there is a material called the confine oxide. It's a really good insulator. And a thick coat of it gets sprayed on the certain part of the engine.

M: An insulator?

W: (25) Yes. It reflects back the heat of burning fuel. So the fuel will burn much more hotly and burn up more completely.

M: So a lot less unburned fuel comes out to pollute the air, right?

W: (25) Yeah, and the bus will need less fuel. So with the savings on fuel cost, they say this will all pay for itself in just six months.

M: Sounds like people should all go out and get this stuff to spray their car engines.

W: Well, not really that easy. To melt the materials before you can spray a coat of it on the engine parts, you first have to heat it over 10,000 degrees. It's not something we are able to do ourselves.

23. Why doesn't the woman drive her car?

24.What are the two speakers talking about?

25.What can we learn from the conversation about the material mentioned?

(20)

A.Something is wrong with her car.

B.The cost of the fuel is high.

C.It's cheap to take bus.

D.She thinks public transportation is environmental friendly.

听力原文:M: Good afternoon, is there anything I can help you with?

W: Yes. I've just checked my bank account and found that my spending in this semester has far exceeded what I planned.

M: How far exactly?

W: The rest of my money isn't enough for the trip home.

M: The cost of living in Britain is a little higher than in other countries and many foreign students meet this problem every year. Some schools set up a special office to help those in financial trouble.

W: What shall I do now?

M: First, you have to control your spending. Do not buy things you have no immediate use for. Also, reduce your spending on entertainment and rent a cheaper room if your current room is a little expensive.

W: Well, What I spend is usually necessary and cannot be reduced much. My room is a little ex- pensive, but it's close to the school and can save a great deal on transportation.

M: De you travel a lot? Traveling usually costs a lot of money.

W: Yes, I do. I went to many places because I wanted to see different people and-experience various cultures.

M: Control your spending on traveling. As well as by reducing your overall spending, you can earn some money by taking a part-time job.

W: Is there any limitation on taking a part-time job?

M: Yes. The total time spent on a part-time job should not exceed 20 hours a week. Otherwise your study would be affected.

(23)

A.She failed m an examination.

B.She had difficulty in her study.

C.She spent more than she planned

D.The rent of her room is too costly.

听力原文:W: I am sharing a room with three students this semester. Because we come from di
fferent countries, we are so different that we aren't getting along very well with each other.

M: We provide a homestay program too. You could choose an American family and live with them next semester.

W: What benefits can a homestay program provide?

M: There are lots of benefits. First, with an American family, the living environment will be relaxing and quiet. Second, you will learn a lot about American culture. Third, it's a perfect way to improve your English. Fourth, you may make good friends with your homestay family. Finally, they will also give you plenty of advice about living in the U. S.

W: Is it expensive to live with an American family?

M: The cost usually runs from $500 to $700 per month, and the contract period may be for a semester or for a year.

W: How should we get along with the host family?

M: Always ask your host family questions when you don't completely understand something, or if you aren't sure that you have understood. Interact frequently with all members of the house- hold and keep good relations with them. Try something new whenever you can, e. g. , food, customs, activities, holiday celebrations, etc.

W: If someone in my host family says something, either out of misunderstanding of or prejudice against my country, what should I do?

to. But I have tutoring then. M: Tutoring? I can hardly imagine that you need a help with a class. W: I mean Im tutoring someone else. I go downtown to tutor a few students at high school. M: I find that hard to believe. And what subject do you tutor, math or something else? W: Right. You see, the city is trying to raise the standards for its math classes. The problem is, a lot of the kids are far behind when they get to juniour high school. M: Yeah, I have read such report in the newspaper. But does the time schedule conflict with your own classes? W: I only have three students for forty minutes each weekend. Most of the tutors there are students at university, so our classes arent over there. And we are volunteers, so the programme doesnt cost a lot and the city education department likes us. M: Can you afford to take that much time away from your own studying? W: Some weeks are kind of hard especially when the examination is approaching. But anyway I may as well get used to teaching easy materials to the students, so as to get the practical experience. M: And it must be nice to help people. W: Definitely. Forty minutes a week isnt much time, but all the three of my students have improved in the months weve worked together. Its really inspiring. Questions 9 to 12 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 9. What will the woman do on the weekend? 10. What is the problem with the kids in juniour high school? 11.
