Techniques to Help Us Remember Better
We all have problems remembering things, but there are some techniques that you can use to help you remember.
First of all, remember the names and jobs of the people and where they come from. ______【46】. And you should try to think of funny images as they are easier to remember. For example, we have Tom—the student from Australia. Well, for Tom you might imagine a tomato. Then Australia has a shape a bit like a dog. ______【47】. So imagine Tom's face as a tomato and he's with a dog and the dog is reading a book. So now we have a picture of Tom the student from Australia.
Now let's take the numbers. The best thing to do here is to break a large number up into smaller numbers and then think of things that the numbers remind you of, such as a birthday, a particular year, the number of a house. ______【48】.
With the directions, the best thing is to imagine you yourself following the directions.
______【49】. Count the turnings 1, 2. . . Then turn left. Now imagine going past a supermarket and a cinema and so on.
When you have to remember lists of words, try to build them into a story. So with our words we might start with, "The sun was shining, so I went for a walk. I saw a horse wearing trousers. It was kicking some bananas over a television. The bananas landed in a bag. " And so on. ______【50】. Try some of these techniques and you'll be amazed at what you can remember.
A. We cannot remember the same as we can do before we get old
B. Now let's imagine it's a very clever dog and is studying
C. Create a picture in your mind of yourself going down the street
D. Here, the best thing is to imagine images of the people and the names that you want to remember
E. Again the funnier the story, the better
F. Or with a number like 747 you might think of a jumbo jet—a Boeing 747

Early Ideas about the Universe
1 Early man got his ideas about the universe by looking at the stars as you do. He observed carefully, and learned many things about the sun, the moon, and the stars.
2 Suppose you were asked to collect evidence about the sun as early man did. You might go out morning after morning and see it come up in the east. Even on cloudy mornings, you would observe that the darkness goes away and the world becomes light. You might not see the sun but would be sure it is there, because you notice that the earth warms up. As you continued, the sun climbs higher in the sky each day during part of the year. It stays in the sky longer. The earth gets warmer. Things begin to grow. It is spring and then summer.
3 After a while the sun stays in the sky for shorter and shorter periods. Many plants begin to die. Leaves fall. Winter comes. Year after year this is repeated and you cannot tell exactly why it happens. But you realize that the sun seems to make the difference. Primitive (原始的) man felt that since the sun was so powerful it must be a god. It may seem silly to us now to worship (崇拜) a sun-god, but primitive man was right about the importance of the sun to life on earth.
4 You have been told that the world is round. But suppose no one had ever taught you that the world was like a huge ball. Would you have ever thought of it yourself? You cannot see the curve (曲线) of the earth at once. You would have no idea of how big it was. That's why early man believed that the earth was small and flat. Such ideas appeared from the evidence they had.
5 If you watch the stars night after night, you will see them rise and set. As you look at the sky, it is not difficult to imagine that you are in the center of a vast collection of twinkling (闪烁) lights. Some early astronomers (天文学家) believed the sky was a crystal shell or series of crystal shells, one inside the other. They believed this because that is what the night sky looked like. For many centuries, men believed that the earth was the center of the universe and that the sun, the moon, and the stars circled around it.

听力原文:M: Sarah, you work in the admissions office, don't you?
W: Yes, I'm... I've been here ten years as an assistant director.
M: Really? What does that involve?
W: Well, I'm in charge of all the admissions of postgraduate students in the university.
M: Only postgraduates?
W: Yes, postgraduates only. I've nothing at all to do with undergraduates.
M: Do you find that you get particular...sort of...different national groups? I mean, do you get large numbers from Latin America or...
W: Yes. Well, of all the students enrolled last year, nearly half were from overseas. They were from African countries, the Far East, the Middle East, and Latin America.
M: Em. But have you been doing just that for the last 10 years, or, have you done other things?
W: Well, I've been doing the same job. Er, before that, I was secretary of the medical school at Birmingham, and further back, I worked in the local government.
M: Oh, I see.
W: So I've done different types of things.
M: Yes, indeed. How do you imagine your job might develop in the future? Can you imagine shifting into a different kind of responsibility or doing something...?
W: Oh, yeah, from October 1, I'll be doing an entirely different job. There's going to be more committee work. I mean, more policy work, and less dealing with students, unfortunately—I'll miss my contact with students.
