Tips on Job Search

Marketing You in the Employment Marketplace

You will have to become a salesperson in order to sell yourself in the employment marketplace. And you will have to learn to sell yourself according to the way your customer buys. Meet the customer needs first in order to meet your personal needs. Become customer-driven instead of product-driven.

The first step in the customer-driven marketing process is to understand the market in general and what potential customer needs may be. It does not do any good to have a super product if there is no market for it. There has to be an established need or want in the job market that is satisfied by the product you are intending to sell.

Do you know what your market is?

Who are your potential customers?

What are the specific needs of customers in your market?

The next step in the customer-driven marketing process is to develop your product according to the specific needs of the marketplace. Have you developed your product to meet the specific market needs? Unfortunately, most students end up taking a major with little or no thought about their intended market.

While it is not the purpose of this guide to go into the entirety of career planning, I will forewarn you that if you are not able to: (1) identify your market, and (2) identify your product in relation to the market needs, you will fail either totally or partially in your job search. So consider yourself forewarned--you need to have a roadmap, an automobile, and a full tank of gas before you start on your trip. Most of us plan our vacations better than we plan our careers. The first step in your job search is to plan the direction you will take toward the type of career you will be seeking. If you have no plan for where you are going, any road will take you there. Don't start off your life blindly or in a random direction. Please make sure you know where you are going before you start your journey of a lifetime.

Prepare to Make an Investment

I have heard literally hundreds of college students talk about how they were going to "coast" in their final year right up to graduation. Your class load may be down, your work load may be lower, and in general, you are finally ready to start living the good life.

Have you forgotten something? If you don't have a job yet, you are spending fools' gold by coasting through your final year. It's a trap. Many students end up spending their final year hitting all the parties, developing a flourishing romance, or just "taking it easy". And then they talk about how they were "too busy" to look for a job when they come up empty at graduation.

Sorry to crash your party, but until you have landed a job, you still have work to do. In fact, more work than you have done to this point. If you want to be a success in your career, you have to be prepared to make an investment--now!

First of all, you will need to invest your time. You should plan on dedicating a minimum of five hours per week and sometimes as much as fifteen to twenty hours per week to your job search. I know that sounds like a lot of time, but get ready--there is even more, You should also plan to use your Fall, Winter and Spring Breaks for full-time job searching. Your breaks are nonrefundable time that should be banked directly to your job search account. I realize I may be stepping on a lot of Florida party animal toes by recommending job search over Daytona, but this is the time for a reality check. One week in the sun could end up burning you badly at graduation. And don't make excuses that you cannot possibly fit anything else into your "crowded schedule". If you are taking more classes than you need to, drop them. If you are attending more social engagements than you need to, avoid them. Stop volunteering for everything that comes along. You onl

听力原文: Finding your first job can be both a rewarding and frustrating experience. Many jobs require experience, but how do you get experience when you are still looking for your first job? You may already have some work experience through volunteer work. Assess your skills and interests to determine what kind of skills you have. Even unpaid work experience is beneficial in your job search.

Also, consider internships and part-time work. Not only is it a great way to get experience which you can put on your resume or on a job application, it is also a great way to try out a career to see if it is really what you want.

Here are some tips you may want to follow in your job search:

Involve friends and family. A support group, such as friends and family, will offer encouragement and assistance in your job search.

Devote time to your job search. A thorough job search is hard work. Expect to spend several hours a day looking for a job.

Be organized. Keep a record of all the places you have applied for, who you talked to, and what response you received.

Meet with people in the field you are interested in pursuing.

Check job listings in the newspaper classified advertising sections or with your local employment office. Your local employment office may also be able to offer some job search assistance.

听力原文: The smart job-seeker should rid herself of several standard myths about intervie
wing before she really starts job-hunting. The following talk lists some of these untruths and offers some tips to help you succeed at your next interview.

The first myth is that the aim of interviewing is to obtain the job you want. This is only half correct. The real aim of an interview is to obtain the job you like; and it also implies turning down the job offer you don't want. The reason for some job-seekers' failure is that they become so used to meeting employers' expectations that they often take up the job they don't really want.

The second one, always please the interviewer, is also not true. Instead of pleasing the interviewer, you should please yourself. You'll get nowhere if you try to give answers that will suit a potential employer without considering your own feelings. Of course, don't be hostile — nobody wants to hire someone disagreeable. Take a middle ground between being too agreeable and being hostile. An effective interview is like an exciting encounter in conversation with your seatmate on an airplane.

The next myth is to try to control the interview. Nobody "controls" an interview, neither you nor the interviewer. Actually, it is an exchange of two parties — like making a telephone call. So hang loose when interviewing: never dominate an interview.

The fourth myth is never to interrupt the interviewer. An exciting conversation always makes us feel free — free to interrupt and show different opinions. So when interviewing, try to be relaxed and natural.

The last myth, don't disagree with the interviewer, is another silly myth. If you don't disagree at times, you consent in fact. Don't hesitate to disagree with your interviewer in an agreeable way. And also feel free to change your mind.

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C) and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.

Passage One

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.

As a person who writes about food and drink for a living. I couldn’t tell you the first thing about Bill Perry or whether the beers he sells are that great. But I can tell you that I like this guy. That’s because he plans to ban tipping in favor of paying his servers an actual living wage.

I hate tipping.

I hate it because it’s an obligation disguised as an option. I hate it for the post-dinner math it requires of me. But mostly, I hate tipping because I believe I would be in a better place if pay decisions regarding employees were simply left up to their employers, as is the custom in virtually every other industry.

Most of you probably think that you hate tipping, too. Research suggests otherwise. You actually love tipping! You like to feel that you have a voice in how much money your server makes. No matter how the math works out, you persistently view restaurants with voluntary tipping systems as being a better value, which makes it extremely difficult for restaurants and bars to do away with the tipping system.

One argument that you tend to hear a lot from the pro-tipping crowd seems logical enough: the service is better when waiters depend on tips, presumably because they see a benefit to successfully veiling their contempt for you. Well, if this were true, we would all be slipping a few 100-dollar bills to our doctors on the way out their doors, too. But as it turns out, waiters see only a tiny bump in tips when they do an exceptional job compared to a passable one. Waiters, keen observers of humanity that they are, are catching on to this; in one poll, a full 30% said they didn’t believe the job they did had any impact on the tips they received.

So come on, folks: get on board with ditching the outdated tip system. Pay a little more upfront for your beer or burger. Support Bill Perry’s pub, and any other bar or restaurant that doesn’t ask you to do drunken math.

What can we learn about Bill Perry from the passage?

A.He runs a pub that serves excellent beer.

B.He intends to get rid of the tipping practice.

C.He gives his staff a considerable sum for tips.

D.He lives comfortably without getting any tips.

•Read the following passage which advises candidates how to answer difficult intervi
ew questions.

•Are the sentences 16-22 "Right" or "Wrong"? If there isn't enough information to answer "Right" or "Wrong", choose "Doesn't say".

•For each sentence, mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer Sheet.

Attending Interviews

Good interviewers prepare their questions carefully in advance according to the candidate's application and CV. So candidates need to prepare just as carefully. Here are some useful tips on answering interview questions.

What don't you like about your current position?

No job is perfect; there's always something we don't like. Be honest but don't give a list of complaints. The important thing is talking positively about how you deal with problems at work.

Where does your employer think you are today?

Be honest. If you lie to your current employer, you'll lie to your next employer. Don't phone in sick in the day of the interview. Take a day's holiday but don't say why.

What are your professional objectives?

Think about these before the interview. Your objectives should be relevant to the job you have applied for and achievable. If the new job can't offer you everything you want, the interviewer will think that you probably won't stay with the company very long.

What are your weaknesses?

Be honest. No one is perfect. Think about this before the interview and choose your answer carefully. Talk about how you deal with a weakness; this is far more important than the weakness itself.

Interviewers ask every candidate the same questions.

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Doesn't say
