physical size hasn't changed, but the world seems much smaller than it did a few hundred years ago. That's because of our improved ability to visit faraway places, contact one another, and instantly learn what goes on in other places.

A thousand years ago, people rarely left their town or village. Trips to nearby areas were made on foot or horseback, and there were fears of wild animals, bandits, and bad weather. About 150 years ago, train travel made trips hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away possible. Also, with the invention of the telegraph, messages could be sent long distances at a low price. Many barriers of distance and communication were starting to fall.

In the 20th century, inventions such as the automobile, airplane, telephone, and television changed people's lives greatly. People could travel across a city in a few minutes or across the world in a few hours. Televisions allowed people to witness important events while they took place. Computers and the Internet let people send letters instantly, access huge amounts of information, and make new friends around the world.

As local communities continue to link together to form. the global community, there will surely be many new tools and methods that make the world seem even smaller.
