Inertial guidance is the name given to those types of systems which guide and keep track o
f the location of vehicles which are free to move in three dimensions. Vehicles which move only on a plane surface, such as ships or automobiles, require only an accurate compass, sextant, and clock to keep track of their present position. When a vehicle can travel up or down as well as north or east, it is much more difficult to fix its position. An inertial platform. is used in inertial guidance to measure vehicle altitude and acceleration which are then integrated to provide position and velocity. The inertial platform. consists of three gyroscopes and three accelerometers mounted in the inner gimbal of the four gimbal platform. The purpose of the inertial platform. is to allow the vehicle to move in any direction about the inner gimbal containing the gyros and accelerometers, without disturbing or turning them from their original orientation. Thus the gyros and accelerometers do not mm when the vehicle turns so they sense altitude and acceleration with respect to their original inertial reference frame. If the acceleration is always known with respect to this original inertial reference frame, it can be integrated to provide velocity and then integrated again to provide distance. Thus the distance and velocity of the vehicle with respect to its starting point are known.

Inertial guidance systems are used today in airplanes, submarines, and spacecraft. They display for the pilot his pitch, roll and yaw angles, his heading, his speed, and his latitude and longitude. These are very important items to have readily available, whether one is in a high speed vehicle with very low visibility due to poor weather, or in a spacecraft traveling in lunar orbit. The main features of inertial systems are that they are automatic and do not require any external information. Thus, the pilot does not have to feed in any information except the original position and altitude. Inertial systems serve a need on fast moving vehicles moving in a three dimensional plane, where position information is required by the pilot almost constantly.

It can be interred from the article that an inertial guidance system is similar to

A.a gyroscope.

B.a high speed vehicle.

C.a navigator.

D.a submarine.

Hunting was originally a means of providing food, but it has now become a sport. Though in
some parts of the world there are still people who hunt wild animals to provide themselves with food, in England, hunting is as much a social activity as anything else. A great many years ago, fishermen in Japan used birds to catch fish. This art of fishing is said to be at least a thousand years old and is mentioned in Japanese plays. Today, however, fishing in this way has simply become a sport, for the fishermen are not seriously interested in catching fish. On summer nights the fishing boats set out on rivers in various parts of the country. At the front of each boat there is an iron basket in which a wood fire kept burning. As the graceful curved boats float past carried along by the current, these fires, dotted here and there, make bright patterns on the water. Steering down the river, the fishermen beat the sides of the boat to encourage the birds, and people out for an evenings entertainment either sit or lie on the floor of the boats drinking beer and sometimes even cooking a meal for themselves over the flames of the fire. This method of fishing demands great skill, for the fisherman has to handle three or four birds in one hand. A long piece of string is tied round the neck of each bird and the fisherman must take care to keep the birds separate from each other. Every so often, the birds are set free and they fly close to the water in search of fish. The moment a bird catches a fish in its beak, it is pulled back on to the boat. The string is held tightly round the birds throat to prevent it from swallowing the fish it has caught. When there do not seem to be many fish in the river, the fishermen can sometimes be seen secretly throwing dead fish into the water for the birds to catch. No one really objects to this practice, as it is all part of this unusual sport. Questions:

What was the original purpose of hunting?

A.To catch the wild animals.

B.To catch the birds.

C.To catch the fish.

D.To provide food.

The Recycling Rate for Tires

In Japan, the recycling rate for tires was already 93 percent in 1993, Discarded tires are recycled here in three ways. The most familiar involves simply using them "as is"--in their original shape for such things as playground equipment in schools and public parks. They are even used in some "bullet train" tracks as shock absorbers.

Another popular use of discarded tires involves extracting rubber for processing into new products. "You can recycle rubber 100 percent, and as often as you wish. Rubber used in making tires is especially strong, so the rubber derived from scrapped(报废的)tires can be used in various ways," says Minoru Muraoka, president of Muraoka Rubber Co. who is bent on(致力于)recycling tires. In addition to being reused in tires, recycled rubber is used to make sheet rubber. Also, powdered rubber is used to make roof tries and slabs for sidewalks, thus contributing to improving the looks of our cities.

The third use for scrapped tires is as fuel. Half of all scrapped tires are currently used for this purpose at various installations requiring large amounts of heat energy.

Furthermore, Takeji Kobata, a researcher in Hokkaido has developed an epoch-making technology for making activated carbon (活性炭) by burning used tires. Activated carbon made from tires is of better quality and has greater absorptive power than other varieties already on the market. With the Kobata method, 1. 5 kilograms of activated carbon can be obtained from a single 7-kilogram automobile tire. Kobata has already obtained manufacturing patent (专利) in the United States, Canada and Taiwan, and has also opened the patented process to the public in Britain, Germany, France and Brazil

第 31 题 The passage is mainly about______

A.using tires in their initial shape

B.how to reuse discarded tires

C.how to recycle activated, carbon

D.the recycling rate of tires in Japan

?Read the article below about exceeding expectations..

?Choose the best sentence from the opposite page to fill each of the gaps.

?For each gap 8--12, mark one letter (A--G) on your Answer Sheet.

?Do not use any letter more than once.

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS

Exceeding expectations is a foundational attitude and something you have to pursue daily. It is a proactive effort that is always looking for a way to express itself. Exceeding expectations is a completely voluntary activity and, when it becomes foundational to the way you think, it has the power to elevate value and become the seed for new opportunity. (8) To exceed expectations on purpose means you have an understanding of expected performance, and you realize expected performance is in no way extraordinary. It becomes tougher when you realize exceeding expectations requires more effort to surpass what might be described as "acceptable performance". (9) The problem is, it's hard to sell mediocrity. Understanding how expectations are created is the first step in being able to exceed them in a positive way. Expectations come from our experience. (10) To illustrate how this happens, consider a tool that has changed the way we all work and communicate: voicemail. Prior to voicemail, when you dialed a phone number, your expectation was to hear a live person answer the phone. (11) The original intent and strategy of voicemail was to create a positive tool that would exceed expectations by significantly improving the speed and results of telephone communication. (12) The message slips were created by switchboard operators and receptionists who handed the message slips off to the people being called.

A Prior to voicemails, the expectation of callers was to get caught up in a process that can best be described as message-slip phone tag.

B When voice mail first appeared, however, that expectation was suddenly shaken by an invitation to leave a personal recorded message.

C It is rare for anyone to exceed expectations unless they do so on purpose.

D It is a proactive effort that is always looking for a way to express itself.

E The latter is in fact mediocrity, and mediocrity is usually the norm.

F As our experience changes, our expectations change, too.

G Typically, the message slips merely reflected the name and number of the caller, and the reason for their call was fairly short and cryptic.

Organizing of Your Speech

If you thumb through any mailorder catalogue today, you will discover that many of the items for sale are organizers—closet organizers, kitchen organizers and office organizers. Read enough catalogues, and you must conclude that is something exists, it can be organized. Why all these quest for organization? Obviously, there's little point in having multiple possessions if you can't find them when you need them. Much the same is true of your speeches. If they are well organized, they will serve you better. Organization allows you and your listeners—to see what ideas you have and to put mental "hands" on the most important ones.

Organization is important

Several years ago a college professor took a wellorganized speech and scrambled it by randomly changing the order of its sentences. He then had a speaker deliver the original version to one group of listeners and the scrambled version to another group. After the speeches, he gave a test to see how well each group understood what they had heard. Not surprisingly, the group that heard the original, unscrambled speech stored much higher than the other group.

A few years later, two professors repeated the same experiment at another school. But instead of testing how well the listeners comprehended each speech, they tested to see what effects the speeches had on the listeners' attitudes toward the speakers. They found that people who heard tile wellorganized speech believed the speaker to be much more competent and trustworthy than did those who heard the scrambled speech.

These are just two of many studies that show the importance of organization in speechmaking. You realize how difficult it is to pay attention to the speaker, much less to understand the message. In fact, when students explain what they hope to learn from their speech class, they almost always put "the ability to organize my ideas more effectively" near the top of the list. This ability is especially vital for speechmaking. Listeners have little patience with speakers who bounce wildly from idea to idea. Keep in mind that listeners cannot flip back to a previous page if they have trouble grasping a speaker's ideas. In this respect a speech is much like a movie. A speaker must be sure listeners can follow the progression of ideas from beginning to end. This requires that speeches be organized strategically.

The first step in developing a strong sense of speech organization is to gain command of the three basic parts of a speech—introduction, body, and conclusion—and the strategic role of each. The body is the longest and most important part. Aim, you will usually prepare the body first. It is much easier to cream an effective introduction after you know exactly what you will say in the body. The process of organizing the body of a speech begins when you deter mine the main points.

Main points

The main points are the central features of your speech. You should select them carefully, phrase them precisely, and arrange them strategically. Here are the main points of a student speech about the medical uses of hypnosis:

Specific purpose:

To inform. my audience about the major uses of hypnosis.

Central Idea:

The major uses of hypnosis today are to control pain in medical surgery, to help people stop smoking, and to help students improve their academic performance.

Main points:

Hypnosis is used in surgery as an adjunct to chemical anesthesia.

Hypnosis is used to help people stop smoking.

Hypnosis is used to help students improve their academic performance.

These three main points form. the skeleton of the body of the speech. If there are three major uses of hypnosis for medical purposes, then logically there can be three main points in the speech.<
