The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) had found a new way to catch criminals by looking at their jeans. The FBI analyzed the jeans of suspects in the Washington case. One pair had a pattern with over two dozen features that matched the jeans Vorder Bruegge's team photographed. At the tri- al, the defense called in a used jeans exporter as an expert witness who claimed the patterns were common to all jeans. He showed the court 34 similar pairs, but in each case the FBI could distinguish them from the accused . The suspect was convicted.

An Unusual Experience at Sea
It was early one morning in February 1972 when Mayoral and his partner Santos Luis Perez set out to fish in Laguna San lgnacio. Hundreds of gray whales were swimming in the three-mile-long, one-mile-wide inlet. This was usual between December and April, for the whales breed in the protected inlets of Baja, the final destination of their annual 6,000-mile migration from the Arctic. Try as he might, however, he could not row over the huge beast. In moments, it overtook them. Expecting the worst, the fishermen dropped to their knees and made the sign of the cross. The whale raised its nine-foot head out of the water and looked at them. Then, remarkably, it began to rub gently against the boat.
Sinking and resurfacing(重新露出水面) on opposite sides of the boat, the whale continued its gentle rubbing for almost an hour. At first the men prayed, frozen in fear. But gradually Mayoral 's terror gave way to curiosity. He was tempted to reach out and touch this oddly unthreatening monster, but a lifetime of caution kept him still.
At last, having finished with whatever its purpose had been, the whale disappeared below the surface. Some time passed before either man spoke. Then they headed home. To his wife, Mayoral said only, "No fish today."
But word spread through the cluster of small wooden houses near the salt-water lake. A strange thing had happened: one of the whales had tried to touch the men, and the men had returned unharmed. Why？

FedEx Corp. raised its earnings forecast for the fiscal first quarter and frill year Monday, citing strong demand for its international express, ground and less-than-truckload services. Chief Financial Officer Alan Graf said risks existed, such as prolonged high oil prices, that could hurt the world economy, but the company expects its business to remain strong.

International Business Machines Corp. widened its lead last year in the U. S. market for Internet hosting services as it won a greater share of the medium-sized business market, according to data recently published by market research firm IDC. The Armonk, N. Y. - based company has identified Web hosting as a key to boosting overall revenue growth. As the hardware business that had been its mainstay has matured over the past several years, IBM has focused on services. According to the most recent report from IDC, published in late July, IBM's Web hosting market share in the United States rose to 24.8 percent in 2003 from 23.5 percent in 2002 and just 15 percent in 2000.
E. Viagra abuse may boost HIV risk
San Francisco has petitioned federal regulators to warn that use of anti-impotence drugs such as Viagra could increase the risk of sexually transmitted disease and HIV, officials said on Monday. The request to the Food and Drug Administration earlier this month is a response to the recreational use of Viagra among gay men, who use it to enhance promiscuous sex. "The predominant problem that we see in San Francisco is with widespread use among gay men with multiple partners," said Jeffrey Klausner, director of sexually transmitted disease prevention at the city's health department.
The company has decreased its expectation of turnover.
