听力原文: In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to phone calls made after 11: 00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it is a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

If a late phone call is regarded in the U.S. as a cause for concern, imagine the excitement and fear caused by a crowd of people arriving at the door at 2: 00 a.m. On an island in the south Pacific, a plant manager from the U.S. had just such an experience. The natives of the island met one night to discuss a problem. When they arrived at a solution, they went to see the plant manager and woke him up to tell him what had been decided. Unfortunately, they did not know that it is a very serious matter to wake Americans at such an hour. The plant manager, who did not understand the local culture, thought there was a fight and called the police.

听力原文: The basic flag of the United States is one of the world's oldest national flags. Only the basic flags of Austria, Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland are older.

The first official flag of the United States was created by Congress on June 14,1777. It consisted of 13 alternate red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a field of blue, representing the 13 colonies that had declared their independence in 1776. Congress adopted a new flag of 15 stars and 15 stripes in 1795, to give representation to the two new states admitted into the Union, Vermont and Kentucky.

By 1817, there were 20 states in the Union, and it became apparent that adding one stripe for each new state would destroy the shape of the flag. As a result, in 1818, congress restored the design of 13 stripes and provided that each state was to be represented by one star. In 1912 President William H. Taft made the first official provision for the arrangement of the stars. He ordered that there be six even rows of eight stars each. Previously, the arrangement of the stars had been left to the flag-maker's fancy.

The evolution of the Stars and Stripes reflects the growth of the United States. After the admission of Hawaii into the Union in 1959, the flag was officially changed for the 26th time since its creation.

听力原文: New York City is the largest city in the United States. Unlike most American cities, which make up only a part of a particular county, New York City is made up of five separate counties, which are called boroughs. They are Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island.

Manhattan, or New York County, is the smallest of the five boroughs, covering an area of 59.5 sq km (23 sq mi). It is the glittering heart of the metropolis. It is the site of virtually all of the hundreds of skyscrapers that are the symbol of the city. Among the more famous of these are the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Citicorp Center. The 110-story twin towers of the World Trade Center were also among New York's famous skyscrapers until they were destroyed in a terrorist attack in 2001.

Manhattan is the center of New York's cultural life. Numerous stage and motion picture theaters are located around Broadway in Midtown, which includes Times Square. The borough is the home of prominent music and dance organizations, such as the New York City Opera Company, the Metropolitan Opera Association, American Bailer Theatre, and the New York City Ballet.

In 1945, the United States Congress invited the United Nations to establish its permanent headquarters in the United States. Completed in 1952, the UN complex sits in Manhattan, alongside the East River, in the city of New York.

听力原文: Weather scientists call hurricanes by names to make clear which storm they are talking about. An Australian weather scientist began giving women's names to storms before the end of the nineteenth century. Weather scientists used the names of their girlfriends or wives for storms during World War Two. A different list of names is used each year. The first name begins with the letter "A". The second begins with "B" and so on. The same list will not be used again for at least six years. The names of storms that have caused extremely severe damage may be retired at the request of the country that was affected. That name will not be used again for at least ten years.
