听力原文:Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the student.

If a long-reading assignment is given, instructors expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or on a given examination. (Courses are not designed merely for the students to pass exams, ) The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in get- ting high grades. Grade-conscious students may be frustrated with teachers who do not believe it is necessary to grade every assignment. Sometimes home work is returned with brief written comments but without a grade.

When research is assigned, the professor expects the students to take the initiative and to complete the assignment with minimal guidance. Professors expect students, particularly graduate students, to be able to exhaust the reference sources in the library.

Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students do not be overly dependent on them. The time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student had problems with classroom work, the student should either approach a professor during office hours or make an appointment.

(33)

A.For the sake of high grades.

B.For passing given examinations.

C.For the good of gaining knowledge.

D.For the completion of required assignments.

听力原文: Many children act in TV shows. They work several hours every day, so they can not go to a regular school. How do they get an education?

In Hollywood, where many TV shows are made, about forty teachers give lessons for the children in the shows. They teach wherever their pupils are working.

The teacher's job is very important. She is responsible for making sure that the child works only in the permitted hours each week. She is also responsible for making sure that the child learns the required subjects. She makes sure, too, that the child gets enough rest and play, along with his education.

Child actors are required to attend classes twenty hours each week. California law says that they must be taught from September to the middle of June. If they do not get good marks in school, they are not permitted to continue working in TV shows.

TV children are usually good pupils, and most of their teachers like this special kind of work. Their classes are held in many interesting places. Sometimes the "classroom" is a Mississippi riverboat. Sometimes it is the inside of a spaceship. Often the pupils become famous stars.

(33)

A.Their parents accompany and teach them.

B.They go to a regular school.

C.Hollywood teachers give them lessons.

D.They get their education when they are not at work.

听力原文: At the start of the Middle Ages in Europe, there were no schools, as we know them today. There were no grade schools or high schools. There were no universities where young men could learn professions such as law or medicine. The only schools were in churches or monasteries. Except for some priests and monks, few people could read or write.

As time went on, many young men needed an education so they could learn a profession. In order to get an education, they had to be taught by teachers in a church school.

Some churchmen became known as great teachers. Wherever there was a great teacher, young men gathered to live and study. Then other teachers came to teach the subjects they knew best. A center of learning was formed.

Around A.D. 1100, a famous center of learning grew up around the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France. A well-known teacher named Peter Abelard was there. Thousands of students came to Paris from all over Europe. Many teachers came too, and gave classes of their own.

Sometime between A.D. 1150 and A.D. 1170, the teachers formed a group that was much like a union. This group became the University of Paris. The University of Paris was one of the early universities. It had many teachers who taught different subjects, and it served as a model for other such universities.

(31)

A.High schools.

B.Universities.

C.Churches or monasteries.

听力原文: In recent years, linguists(语言学家) and language teachers have begun to describe language according not only to grammatical structure, using traditional concepts and terms such as the imperative, but also by function. For example, add "please" to the order "Open the window!", and the structure remains imperative. The function of the utterance, however, is now that of polite request.

Function, then, is determined partly by the user's attitude, and is realized by a variety of linguistic and paralinguistic features—vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, tone of voice, gesture and facial expression. The language learner can often tell the difference easily between certain basic functions—those of command and request, for example. However, learning to use these different functions of language to communicate effectively is not always so easy.

Language function is also determined by the situation in which the language is used. "Be quiet!" coming from a teacher tired of noisy pupils is obviously an order or command. Used by a nervous bank robber to a fellow in crime, when he thinks he has heard a noise which could have been made by a suspicious policeman, the sentence would be a warning. When we look at the imperative in this way, then, we realize that it consists of a small set of structural forms which can fulfill many different functions: commands, prohibitions, warnings, as well as many others.

(30)

A.Grammatical structure.

B.Function.

C.Traditional concepts and terms.

D.Both A and B

听力原文: Today school children in many countries have high rates of failing eyesight. Two methods have been proposed to prevent near-sightedness, one Western and one Chinese. The Western method was developed by Mr. Bates, a British actor, in the early part of last century. He trained people to relax their eyes frequently during a period of intense reading. His methods included covering open eyes with the palms of the hands and looking at distant objects by moving the eyes from side to side instead of staring at them. Bates also encouraged school children to look frequently at a calendar on the wall of the classroom to relax their eyes. A famous British writer even wrote a book on the beneficial effects of the Bates' method for his vision.

The traditional Chinese method involves pressing certain points around the eyes with the fingers. This also relaxes excessive tension in eye muscles, it is best done by doctors trained in traditional Chinese medicine, but it can also be done by students themselves.

Teachers and parents should encourage pupils to relax their eyes frequently while reading and studying.

听力原文: Sometimes the simplest of tools is the most useful. Consider, for example, the ruler. A ruler is mainly used to measure and draw straight lines on flat surfaces. Some rulers are clear and can be seen through, some made of metal, and some provide both metric and American measurements. People carry them ill their shirt pockets, briefcases, or purses, to have them available for use any time.

Of course, the ruler is not only simple but very useful device. Consider, for instance, the pencil, the doorknobs and hinges, and glass. Jet planes and computers are fine, but not necessary for survival. Who, on the other hand, could survive without the simple tools mentioned here?

听力原文: In 1848, gold was discovered near San Francisco and the first great gold-rush began. When the news spread, farmers, lawyers, sailors, soldiers and school teachers rushed to California by what ever means they could. Within a ear, 100.000 people only 8,000 of whom were women had reached the coast of California. More than half of them had traveled overland across the American continent. Many came by sea, and in July 1850 more than 500 ships were anchored in San Francisco Bay, many of which had been deserted by gold-hungry sailors. A few people became very rich, but it was a risky business. Law and order broke down, Even if a miner "struck it rich" , there were always those who would try to take it away: gamblers, outlaws, and thieves.
