听力原文: More and more people are immigrating into the United States. The growing numbers of new immigrants have caused some tensions. Asian-Americans are concerned about a number of anti Asian incidents in the last five years. Some of the incidents involved racial insults. Some involved violence.
The United States Civil Rights Commission reported last autumn that anti-Asian violence is a national problem. Social experts say some Americans are looking for someone to blame for the country's economic problems. These people believe Japan is responsible for the trade imbalance and loss of industrial jobs. So they blame anyone who, to them, looks like Japanese... or simply Asian. This feeling is strongest, experts say, among poorer Americans who are struggling for survival.
Partly because of this problem, Asian-Americans are becoming more politically active. They are speaking out against anti-Asian violence and against policies based on anti-Asian feelings.
Traditionally, Asians have taken little part in politics in the United States. They put their energy into hard work and taking care of their families. Now, a movement for more political power has begun.
Asian-American politicians say the reason is mainly the desire for political representation. They say all Asian Americans do not share the same political goals, but share a desire to end all forms of racism. These political leaders would like to see more Asian-Americans in political life. California politician Jule Tang believes that Asian-Americans will become a united political force with their own elected officials. Ms. Tang says, "Asians want to be really part of the American system."

听力原文: A fellow had just been hired as the new CEO of a large high-tech corporation. The CEO who was stepping down met with him privately and presented him with three numbered envelopes. "Open these if you run up against a problem you don't think you can solve," he said. Well, things went along pretty smoothly, but six months later, sales took a decline and he was really under the pressure. He remembered the envelopes. He went to his drawer and took out the first envelope. The message read, "Blame your former CEO. " The new CEO called a press conference and laid all the faults on the previous CEO. Satisfied with his comments, the press responded positively, sales began to pick up and the problem was soon behind him. About a year later, the company was again experiencing serious product problems. Having learned from his previous experience, the CEO quickly opened the second envelope. The message read, "Reorganize". Then he did, and the company quickly reorganized. After several months, the company once again fell on difficult time. The CEO went to his office, closed the door and opened the third envelope. The message said, "Prepare three envelopes".

听力原文: Today we'll examine the role that private transportation-namely,the automobile-plays in city planning.
A number of sociologists blame the automobile for the decline of the downtown areas of major cities. In the 1950's and 1960's,the automobile made it possible to work in the city and yet live in the suburbs many miles away. Shopping patterns changed;instead of going to downtown stores, people in the suburbs went to large shopping malls outside the city and closer to the home. Merchants in the city failed, and their stores closed.
Downtown shopping areas became deserted. In recent years there's been a rebirth of the downtown area,as many suburbanites have moved back to the city. They've done this,of course,to avoid highways blocked with commuters from the suburbs. I've chosen this particular city planning problem-our dependence on private transportation-to discuss in groups. I'm hoping you will all come up with some novel solutions. Oh,and don't approach the problem from a purely sociological perspective;try to take into account environmental and economic issues as well.

M: No, I have been around. It's just that I've got this pain in my elbow that's keeping me from playing tennis. And you know how much I love tennis!
W: I know. I used to see you practice every night. So what have you been doing to treat your elbow?
M: You name it pain-killers, heating pads, ice. But nothing seems to work.
W: Have you tried acupuncture?
M: Well, I've heard about it--they stick needles in all parts of your body, but I'm not too sure.
W: I don't blame you for being hesitant. I had a similar problem with my shoulder a while back. But I read an article about acupuncture for relieving pain, so I figured, why not? I'll try it.
M: And it worked?
W: It worked for me. The article was about an acupuncturist in California who's been successful in helping 90 percent of the people he's treated for the pain they get in their hands when they type too much.
M: That sounds promising. Now, isn't acupuncture a Chinese tradition?
W: That's right. The Chinese have been using acupuncture to treat pain for thousands of years. But it's really starting to catch on over here now. There are more than 9,000 licensed acupuncturists in the United States.
M: Wow! Is there an acupuncturist near campus?
W: There sure is. Are you busy now? I could walk you over there and you could make an appointment.
M: That'd be great. I want to get this problem taken care of as soon as possible so I can start playing tennis again.

Preventing Child Maltreatment(虐待)
Child maltreatment is aglobal problem with serious life-long consequences. There are no reliable global estimates for the prevalence (流行) of child maltreatment. Data for many countries, especiallylow-and middle-income countries, are lacking.
Child maltreatment iscomplex and difficult to study. Current estimates vary widely depending on the country and the method of research used.Nonetheless, international studies reveal that approxi-mately 20% of women and 5~10% of men reportbeing sexually abused as children, while 25~50% of all children report being physically abused.Additionally, many children are subject to emotional "abuse(sometimesreferred to as psychological abuse and neglect).
Every year, there are about31,000 homicide(杀人)deaths in children under 15. This number un-derestimates the trueextent of the problem,as a significant proportion of deaths due to childmaltreat-ment are incorrectly attributed to falls, burns and drowning.
Child maltreatment causessuffering to children and families and can have long-term conse-quences.Maltreatment causes stress that is associated with disruption in early braindevelopment. Ex-treme stress can impair(伤害)the development ofthe nervous and immune(免疫)systems. Consequent-ly,as adults, maltreated children are at increasedrisk for behavioural, physical and mental health prob-lems. Via(通过)the behavioural andmental health consequences, maltreatment can contribute to heart disease, cancer, suicide and sexually transmitted infections.
Beyond the health consequencesof child maltreatment, there is an economic impact, including costs ofhospitalization, mental health treatment, ch ild welfare, and longer-term healthcosts.
A number of risk factors forchild maltreatment have been identified. These risk factors are not present inall social and cultural contexts, but provide an overview when one attempts tounderstand the causes of child maltreatment.
It is important to emphasizethat children are the victims and are never to blame for maltreatment.A numberof characteristics of an individual child may increase the likelihood of beingmaltreated, such as being either under four years old or an adolescent, beingunwanted,or failing to fulfill the expecta-tions of parents and having specialneeds' crying persistently or having abnormal physical features.
International studies reveal that
A.many children have been neglected
B.child maltreatment is most serious in developed countries
C.20% of children have been sexually abused
D.25~50% of girls have been physically abused

When an organization doesn't work right, executives are often quick to blame for "people problems". But that's wrongheaded, If an organization is not suited
34 to the skills and attitudes of its members, the problem lies in with the design,
35 not the people. For this test, first look at your key players -- the members of the
36 top management team and other individuals are deemed critical to the business.
37 For each, ask them whether the design provides the appropriate responsibilities
38 and reporting relationships and wins their commitment. If so, for example, your
39 CEO is a marketing type one and the design focuses her attention on
40 performance management, you have got a problem. Now look at the pivotal
41 jobs in the design -- the position that will need to be staffed by highly talented
42 people even if the organization is to work well. Typically, these will include the
43 heads of all key business units and the managers of all functions who involved
44 in critical cross-unit relationships . Do you have the career paths ready and development initiatives needed to create it and retain new talent for tomorrow?
45 Do you have outstanding people to staff these jobs today?

Scientists claim that sleeping habits, central heating, medicines and even some pollutants can play a role in weight gain. Lack of sleep could be partly to blame. In recent years, the average night's sleep has dropped from nine hours to just seven. Sleep lack changes levels of the hormones that regulate food intake and body fat and increase hunger and appetite.
If it is too hot or too cold, we burn calories to cool down or heat up. But if the temperature is just right, the calories may be turned into body fat instead.
Those who take medicines to control their blood pressure can often put on more weight. Similarly, studies have shown that going on the Pill can add to a woman's weight. Mother Nature may also be to blame, with our body shape being partly determined by our parents. The overweight are also more likely to be associated with partners of a similar size, and their children are more likely to be overweight.
The scientists from Yale, Cornell and Johns Hopkins published their analysis of these findings last week. Their reasoning goes like this:
1. Sleep--Too little increases appetite.
2. Medicine--Many modern medicines lead to us putting on weight.
3. Mother's age--Older women are more likely to have obese children.
4. Giving up smoking--Nicotine suppresses the appetite.
5. Getting older--Weight tends to increase with age.
What does the author think of the advice "eat less and exercise more"?
A.It may not be a solution for all who face this problem since the reasons for people's getting fat varies.
B.There are various other ways to achieve the goal of weight-loss and this is not the best one.
C.Exercise is something you will never get your returns and your efforts will be in vain.
D.It has been talked about for too long a time that a newer alternative is needed.
