A good marriage is good for the heart, according to new research supported by the Heart an
d Stroke Foundation.

"There's little question that a harmonious state of matrimony gives a healthy edge when it comes to medical matters of the heart," says Dr. Brian Baker, Heart and Stroke Foundation researcher. But he doesn't prescribe wedding bells for his patients because, as he points out, not all marriages are happy.

The study is being presented today at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress 2001, hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.

The three-year study included 118 men and women with mild high blood pressure (hypertension). One third of the participants were women, two thirds were men. All were married, although there were no spousal couples in the study.

At the beginning and the end of the three-year study, participants completed a questionnaire designed to measure how happy or unhappy—they were in their marriages. They also had their blood pressure measured, and underwent echocardiography to measure their hearts. "People with thicker heart walls tend to have higher blood pressure. Thinner heart walls indicate lower blood pressure," explains Dr. Baker, a psychiatrist specializing in cardiovascular medicine.

For one 24-hour period the participants wore a device that monitored the daily fluctuations of their blood pressure while they went about their normal working lives.

In the group whose marriages were under strain, heart wall thickness increased by an average of 8%. In the group who defined themselves as happily married, heart wall thickness actually decreased 5%. Also the unhappily married group showed higher mean blood pressures both over the 24-hour monitoring and over the entire three year period.

"In a marriage that is not under strain, commitment and satisfaction are higher," says Dr. Baker. "But, in order to get the cardio protective effect, you have to have lots of contact. We found that when you have both satisfaction and are able to spend time together, then the blood pressure goes down. In a good marriage you spend more time together. Those people who felt they had strong marital support spent nearly twice as much time with their partners."

"When the marriage is in trouble, you tend to avoid your partner."

Such a marriage appears to encourage high blood pressure and unhealthy lifestyles, risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

Dr. Anthony Graham, spokesperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation says, "This study adds to the growing body of evidence indicating that there is a physiological dimension to unhappiness and stress. Living well should mean more than just physical fitness, important though that is. Feeling good about yourself and your relationships may also be good medicine."

According to Dr. Brian Baker, ______.

A.people with heart trouble should get married

B.a harmonious marriage is beneficial for heart health

C.healthy hearts are a result of happy marriages

D.the sound of wedding bells can soothe troubled hearts

听力原文:W: Dr. Smith, thank you for coming to our program.

M: My pleasure.

W: When you said that the Internet is causing a decline in psychological well-being, what do you mean by that?

M: Well, psychologically, people are getting more depression and loneliness than before, especially for those who spend long time on the Internet.

W: So if people spend just a few hours a week on the Internet, they would not have the bad feeling then?

M: Not really. Actually, it's not the long time on the Net that causes them feel bad but the state of being on the Net does.

W: But you said you had much brighter expectations at first.

M: Yes, we supposed that the Net would prove to be socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.

W: Then, why did the result turn to be completely contrary to your expectations?

M: Well, people on the Net do have more "virtual" communication, but this kind of faceless and bodiless communication is less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation. And they reduce their time being with family and friends. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.

W: The Internet should be found guilty of this phenomenon, right?

M: I don't think so. It's not about the technology; it's about how it is used. It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.

22.What really makes people feel bad on the Internet according to the man?

23.Which is included in the expectations of the man at first?

24.Why do people get less happiness from the spiritual aspect?

25.What is the radical reason for this phenomenon according to the man?

(23)

A.Spending more hours on the Internet.

B.Spending fewer hours on the Internet.

C.The state of being on the Internet.

D.Their brighter expectations not being met.

听力原文: Here's some bad news for students who put off studying, procrastinators get more
cold and flu symptoms and have more digestive problems than their punctual classmates. They also tend toward an unhealthy lifestyle, according to a recent study of 374 undergraduates at Carleton University in Ottawa by the Procrastination Research Group. Student procrastinators are more likely to eat poorly and smoke, and they sleep less and drink more than students who do their homework promptly.

At the root of the problem is an inability to regulate behavior. and control impulses—say, drinking more than you had intended when you sat down at the bar. "If you're quite impulsive then you're unable to protect one intention from another," says Timothy A. Pychyl, the leader of the Procrastination Research Group who is also a psychologist and co-author of the study. Things can get worse when tasks are impersonal or out of one's control. "Most assignments are not things that students initiated themselves," he says. "They can lack meaning for that reason."

Giving a procrastinator a hand-held organizer probably won't change habits in the long term. "It's not about time management," Dr. Pychyl says. "Some people will buy a day planner, fill it in and say that's it for today. It becomes part of the procrastination itself."

Such tardiness is not unusual. In one survey, 70 percent of the students confessed to academic tardiness. Some favorite excuses are computer failure, leaving a paper at home and the death of a grandmother.

Procrastinators have many problems, except that ______.

A.they get more cold and flu symptoms

B.they sleep more

C.they smoke and drink more

D.they have more digestive problems
