It is in there two great belts or zones that ninety percent of all earthquakes take place; they say， however， happen anywhere at any time.

This element of the unknown has for centuries added greatly to the dread and horror surrounding earthquakes， but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake forecast may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior， pattems of movements in the earth"s shell，variations in the earth"s force of attraction， and the frequency with which minor earth shakes are observed， scientists have shown increasing success in expecting when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result， a worldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped to prepare for （and thus lessen） the vast destruction that might otherwise have been totally unexpected.

It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and get rid of their destructiveness altogether， but as how and why earthquakes happen become better understood， man will become more and more able to deal with their possible damage before they occur.

（1） IKEA is the world"s largest furniture retailer， and the man behind it is Ingvar Kamprad， one of the world"s most successful entrepreneurs. Born in Sweden in 1926， Kamprad was a natural business man. As a child， he enjoyed selling things and made small profs from selling matches，seeds and pencils in his community. When Kamprad was 17， his father gave him some money as a reward for his good grades. Naturally he used it to start up a business—— IKEA.

Rather， IKEA sold all kinds of miscellaneous goods. Kamprad"s wares included anything that he could sell for profits at discounted prices， including watches， pens and stockings.

（3） IKEA first began to sell furniture through a mail-order catalogue in 1947. the furniture was all designed and made by manufactures near Kamprad"s home. Thus， response to the first showroom was overwhelming: people loved being able to see and try the furniture before buying it. This led to increased sales and the company continued to thrive. By 1955， IKEA was designing all its own furniture.

（5） In 1956 Kamprad saw a man disassembling a table to make it easier to transport. Kamprad was inspired. The man had given him a great idea: fiat packaging. Flat packaging would mean lower shipping costs for IKEA and lower prices for customers. IKEA tried it and sales soared.

The problem was that people had to assemble furniture themselves， but over time， even this grew into an advantage for IKEA. Nowadays， IKEA is often seen as having connotations of self-sufficiency. This image has done wonders for the company， leading to better sales and continued expansion.

The patient had been expected to die within a month without the operation， and doctors said they expected the artificial heart to extend the person"s life by only a month. But the device is considered a major step toward improving the patient"s quality of life.

The new pump， called AbioCor， is also a technological leap from the mechanical hearts used in the 1980s， which were attached by wires and tubes to bulky machinery outside the body. The most famous of those， the Jarvic-7， used air as a pumping device and was attached to an apparatus about the size of a washing machine.

"I think it"s potentially a major step forward in the artificial heart development，" said Dr.

David Faxon， president of the American heart Association. However， he said the dream of an implantable， permanent artificial heart is not yet a reality: "This is obviously an experimental device whose long-term success has to be demonstrated." Only about half of the 4，200 Americans on a waiting list for donor hearts received them last year， and most of the rest died.

Some doctors， including Robert Higgins， chairman of cardiology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond， said artificial hearts are unlikely to replace donor hears." A donor heart in a good transplant can last 15 to 30 years，" he said. "It"s going to be hard to replace that with a machine."

The Abiocor has a 2-pound pumping unit， and electronic controls that adjust the pumping speed based on the body"s needs. It is powered by a small battery pack worn outside the body that transmits current through the skin.
