听力原文: Researchers do not know why people think some colours are warm and other colours are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange, and yellow are warm and that green, blue, and violet are cool. Perhaps warm colours remind people of warm days and cool colours remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is low during the winter, the sunlight appears quite blue. Because the sun is higher during the summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.
People associate colours with different holidays. For example, red is associated with Valentine's Day. On February 14th, Americans send red hearts to people they love. People associate orange with Halloween in October and Thanksgiving Day in November. On October 31 st, many Americans put large orange pumpkins in their windows for Halloween. Many people wear green on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. Violet is a dignified colour which is associated with Easter. On Easter Sunday, people decorate baskets with purple ribbons.
Many expressions in English use colours. These expressions show how people feel about the colours. For example, people associate red with a strong feeling like anger. When someone is very angry, people say that he or she sees red. Red is an active colour. A red-letter day is a lucky day. When criminals are caught in the middle of a crime, people say that they are caught red-handed. Green is the colour of grass and leaves. When someone grows plants well, people say he or she has green fingers. Blue is a sad, thoughtful colour. When someone is very sad, people say he or she is feeling blue. Blues is a kind of jazz that is usually very sad and slow.

Mary didn’t know what to send to her grandparents for Christmas. It was always hard to choose a good Christmas present for them. They didn’t need much, and it was hard for her to be creative every year.
One year, she sent them a big wooden elephant. It sat on the counter for a year, but then it disappeared, probably into a closet somewhere. Another year, she made handmade soaps with nice smells, but they probably weren’t any better than store-bought soaps. Last year, she sent lots of nice pictures of herself in frames, but grandparents’ house was small, and they couldn’t hang up very many.
This year, she decided on fruit. She lived where it was warm and there was lots of nice fruit. Her grandparents lived up north, where it colder and they couldn’t get fresh fruit all year, or at least not oranges and grapefruit. Fresh fruit was healthy for her grandparents, too.
Mary went to a fruit store and sampled the red oranges. She really liked them and bought a kilogram. Then she tried three kinds of grapefruit. The white ones were sour. The star grapefruit were interesting, but the dark red grapefruit were great. So she got a kilogram.
Mary carefully packed the fruit in a box to keep them safe and dry in case one got smashed and its juice got everywhere. Then she wrote the address on the box and mailed it from the store. She felt happy with what she bought.
A few days later, Mary got a phone call from her grandparents, thanking her for the lovely fruit. They said it was a healthy, tasty, and very thoughtful gift. Mary had never felt sogood before.

M: Sure, Lucy.
W: Could you take this one please? I didn't realize how heavy these bags would be.
M: Why did you borrow so many books from the library when you have to walk back to your room from there?
W: Well, I didn't intend to. Indeed, most of the books aren't mine. On my way back I met two classmates who asked me to bring their stuff as they were going to a party. And I'm also going there later, you know, after 1 drop all these bags.
M: What's the occasion?
W: Our professor, Prof Lee, has been on vacation for a month and we thought we'd surprise him. We're getting together for a welcome party.
M: Oh, that's really thoughtful of you.
W: We figure it's the least we can do for him. He's really helped me a lot with my last term paper.
M: Really? That's very kind of him.
W: Well, he understood how difficult it was to submit the paper by the deadline when I was in the hospital, so he granted me a month's extension. He's been such a big help to me. I thought that this might be a small way to thank him.

听力原文:M: Who do you think will make better service people?
W: Should be those people who appear friendly in a job interview.
M: Not necessarily, just as it's false to think that talkative people make better sales representatives than quieter, more thoughtful people.
W: But being friendly is very important to being a better service man.
M: You know in an employment interview, many people can be whomever they think you want for the job. Even if you've hired many, many people, you can be fooled. A true service personality is not something you can directly observe or quickly detect.
W: Then, who should be the people that you will hire?
M: Not all customer service jobs are the same. Someone at a discount store may share some characteristics with a man in a special service unit of a firm that constructs nuclear power plants. But people in both jobs will likely have distinct characteristics that make them ideally suited for one or the other position.
W: Then what kind of personality will be suited to a particular job?
M: Well, first you need to understand what the job truly requires.
W: How do you do that?
M: You analyze the job. Determine the fundamental skills it takes to perform. it well.
W: What are some of these skills?
M: Such skills include: analytic, creative, computational, interpersonal, project management, conflict resolution, negotiating, and time management.
W: You mean that I can find some skills'?
M: Yes. If you assign yourself the task, you can probably identify many of the true skills that lie within a particular job.
W: What is the advantage of it?
M: When you match a job's skill characteristics to a person, you vastly increase the chances for a successful hire.
