The Sahara Desert
The Sahara Desert is the largest desert in the world. It stretches across Africa from Senegal to Egypt. The Sahara Desert is an unfriendly environment. During the day it"s very hot, and at night it"s sometimes very cold. It is also difficult to find water in the Sahara.
In 2006, Kevin Lin, Ray Zahab, and Charlie Engle decided to do something very difficult.
They made the decision to run across the Sahara Desert 4,300 miles (6,920krn). It seemed impossible to do, but they wanted to try. The three men liked to test themselves, and this would be a very big test.
On the morning of November 2, Kevin, Ray, and Charlie started their trip across the Sahara.
Every morning they began running at 5:00. At 11 a.m. they stopped and rested until 5 p.m. Then they ran again until 9:30 in the evening. Each day they ran about 40 miles (64 km). Every day it was the same thing. They got up and ran. They listened to music on their iPods, and they ran and ran.
Kevin, Ray, and Charlie needed to eat a lot of food during their trip. Most people need about 2,000 calories of food each day. Kevin, Ray, and Charlie needed between 6,000 and 9,000 calories every day. That"s a lot of food! They also needed to drink a lot of water.
The three men had some problems on their trip, and many times they wanted to quit and go home. It was often very hot (140~F/60~C) during the day, and the heat made them sick. Their legs and feet hurt. Sometimes it was very windy, and they couldn"t see. One time they got lost. But they didn"t quit. After 111 days, Kevin, Ray; and Charlie successfully finished their trip across the Sahara Desert. They hugged each other and put their hands in the water of the Red Sea. Then they ran to a hotel to take a long shower.
It‘s not always hot in the Sahara Desert. 查看材料

Is There a Way to Keep the Britain"s Economy Growing?
(1) In today"s knowledge economy, nations survive on the things they do best. Japanese design electronics while Germans export engineering techniques. The French serve the best food and Americans make computers,
(2) Britain specializes in the gift of talking. The nation doesn"t manufacture much of anything.
But it has lawyers, stylists and business consultants who earn their living from talk talk and more talk. The World Foundation think tank says the U.K. "s four iconic jobs today are not scientists, engineers, teachers and nurses. Instead, they"re hairdressers, celebrities, management consultants and managers. But can all tl~is talking keep the British economy going? The British government thinks it can.
(3) Although the country"s trade deficit was more than ~ 60 billion in 2006, U.K. "s largest in the postwar period, officials say the country has nothing to worry about. In fact, Britain does have a world-class pharmaceutical industry, and it still makes a small sum from selling arms abroad.
It also trades services-accountancy, insurance, banking and advertising. The government believes Britain is on the cutting edge of the knowledge economy. After all, the country of Shakespeare and Wordsworth has a literary tradition of which to be proud. Rock"n"roll is an English language medium, and there are billions to be made by their cutting-edge bands. In other words, the creative economy has plenty of strength to carry the British economy.
(4) However, creative industries account for only about 4 percent ofU.K. "s exports of goods and services. The industries are finding it hard to make a profit, according to a report of the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. The report shows only 38 percent of British companies were engaged in "innovation activities", 3 percentage points below the EU average and well below Germany (61 percent) and Sweden (47 percent) .
(5) In fact, it might be better to call Britain a "servant" economy- there are at least 4 million people "in service". The majority of the population are employed by the rich to cook, clean, and take care of their children. Many graduates are even doing menial jobs for which they do not need a degree. Most employment growth has been, and will continue to be, at the low-skill end of the service sector, in shops, bars, hotels, domestic service and in nursing and care homes.
Paragraph 2 __________. 查看材料
A.Growth of economy
B."Servant" economy
C.Strengtfi of the creative economy
D.Weakness of the creative economy
E.Gift of talking
F.Export of talking machines

Pathways to Research: Problem-solving
(1) Pittsburgh&39;s many hills aren&39;t kind to bikers. Anyone hoping to pedal to work there has to contend with steep streets like Canton Avenue, which famously climbs at a nearly 40-degree angle. As a result, some residents avoid biking altogether.<br>
(2) But University of Pittsburgh graduate Micah Toll,23, and a few friends recently launched an invention that they hope will increase the city&39;s pedal power. An electric bike called to Pulse PEVO.<br>
A super-strong battery powers the bicycle. Able to hit nearly 20 miles per hour without pedaling, it zips up the city&39;s most daunting(令人却步的)hills. Toll hopes it will persuade people in Pittsburgh and elsewhere to get out of their cars and onto bikes.<br>
(3) If it sounds like Toll has a knack (窍门 ) for fixing problems, that&39;s because he does. In high school, he designed a new type of construction beam. It weighs no more than a feather pillow but can be used to build sturdy (坚固的 ) homes for refugees fleeing war or natural disaster.<br>
For his work, Toll was invited to attend the Inter International Science and Engineering Fair(self)- twice, in 2006 and 2007. The annual competition for young researchers is program of Society for Science & the Public (that&39;s the parent organization of Science News for Kids). Toll says that when, it comes to science, he keeps it simple: "You see a problem and say, "How could I solve that?"<br>
(4) He&39;s not the only to take that approach. Many young researchers get their start by trying to solve a problem or fulfill a need in their own communities. When students dedicate themselves to finding a solution that many benefit their community, "a passion is ignited (点燃) ," says Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Inter Foundation, which sponsors Intel ISEF." Finding that passion and fostering it can be the key to many students future success," she says.
