听力原文: Have you ever felt your mind got confused after a sleepless night? You couldn't come up with an original thought no matter how hard you tried.

You were probably right if you thought that was caused by a lack of sleep. Dr. Home, a sleep researcher in England, studied 24 college students divided into two groups. One group got their normal eight hours of sleep. The other group didn't get the smallest amount of sleep--they stayed awake all night. The next day, Dr. Home tested the students. He asked them questions that required creative and original thinking. One of the questions was "How many uses can a cardboard box be put to?"

The results? The wide-awake students did well on the tests. The tired students did poorly.

Research has already shown that tired people can do okay on tests of routine thinking, like simple addition. But Dr. Home tested creative thinking only.

As part of his study, he offered an amount of money as a reward to the sleepy students if they did well. But even this encouragement wasn't enough to help the students overcome their tiredness. They still did poorly. Dr. Home believes that the cerebral cortex--the part of the brain where thinking takes place--may get worn out during waking hours. Sleep may help to repair the brain overnight. "Without any sleep," he emphasizes, "even if you concentrate harder, you cannot do better." This study gives people something to think about, especially people like hospital workers and airline pilots, who must stay awake all night and then make emergency decisions.

(33)

A.The lack of sleep.

B.The difficult question.

C.The requirement of your creative thinking.

听力原文: It was in 1951, during my first week at North Carolina College, a black school, the English chairman's wife, who was as light as a white woman, stopped me one day in the ball.

When I went to her office, she said, "You had the highest grade on the examination." She was talking about the exam that the entire freshman class took. In spite of her smile, her eyes and tone of voice said, "How could this blackskinned girl score higher on the test than the other students? It must be a mistake.' At North Carolina College, color was used in deciding status. The faculty assumed that lightskinned students were more intelligent, and they were always a bit surprised when a darkskinned student did well, especially if she was a girl.

When the grades for the first quarter come out, I had the highest average in the freshmen class. The chairman's wife called me into her office again, pulled out a copy of the freshman English final exam, and asked me to retake it. I couldn't believe it. It was so incredible to her that I had the highest score in the class that she was trying to test me again. I felt angry, so intense that I wanted to start hitting her. I have seldom hated anyone so deeply. I handed the exam paper back to her and walked out.

Unpopular Subjects?

Is there a place in today's society for the study of useless subjects in our universities? Just over 100 years ago Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Contraction Fame argued in a well-written letter to Nature that “universities must be allowed to study useless subjects – if(1)don't, who will?” he went on to use the example of Maxwell’s electrodynamics (电动力学) as one case where a“useless subject” has been transformed (转换) to a (2) subject.

Nowadays this argument is again very active in many (3)Indeed one suspects that it is one of those arguments that must be fought anew (重新) by each generation. But now there is an(4) twist (歪曲,扭曲)- subjects must not only be useful, they (5)also be popular enough that students will flock (蜂拥) to do them, and even flock to (6)to do them.

As universities become commercial operations, the pressure to eliminate (去除) subjects or departments that are less popular will become (7)Perhaps this is more acutely(尖锐地) felt at the moment by physics. There has been much discussion in the press of universities that are (8) physics departments and incorporate (使合并) them with mathematics or engineering departments.

Many scientists think otherwise. They see physics as a (9) science, which must be kept alive if only to provide a (10)for other sciences and engineering. It is of their great personal concern that physics teaching and research is (11) in many universities. How can it be preserved (保留,保存) in the rush towards commercial (12)? A major turnaround (转变) in student popularity (讨人喜欢,流行) may have to wait (13)the industrial world discovers that it needs physicists and starts paying them well.

Physics is now not only unpopular; it is also “hard”.We can do more about the lattery (14)teaching in our schools and universities. We can also develop cooperative arrangements to ensure that physicists(15)their research and teaching up to date.
