Changing Trends in Magazine Industry The impact of New York-based Fashion City Magazines

new advertising campaign took owner Charlie Ahn by surprise. Sales figures for this year are three times higher than last years. Last year he decided to discontinue use of return cards which attached to their advertisements in magazines. They had been receiving fewer return cards since three years ago. At that time they obtained many new subscribers each year through return cards. However, those numbers dropped significantly. He changed advertising strategies at the beginning of this year. Through surveys, the marketing department learned that the public would rather call their toll-fee subscription number than complete and mail a return card. Subscribers prefer this method not because of cost savings but because of convenience and it saves time. They find it faster and easier to speak to someone directly over the phone. Ahn said to Jason Moore, our reporter in his office that he plans to hire outside consultants to help him improve his long-range marketing plans. "The consultants are experts in harnessing the power of the Internet to achieve business goals." said Mr. Ahn. He also plans to use e-commerce to give him a competitive edge over the readers. He will make a digital version of his magazine and readers can receive notifications when new issues become available. Customers can have access to web-exclusive feature articles that arent available in the printed edition. The new innovative magazine will show articles with embedded flash movies in addition to pictures.

What is the purpose of the article?

A.To explain why the sales for a magazine increased

B.To encourage the public to read a fashion magazine

C.To announce that a company will open a new publishing company

D.To describe how to establish a consulting firm

听力原文:W: Every day, surprising new research is being carried out all over the world. Fi
ndings that are changing our traditional view of old age. New studies are proving that more and more people are living way beyond their expectations. So then, we decided to get a real first-hand look into this incredible groups of senior citizens.., the oldest old.., centenarians. We asked Mr. Victor Parnell, the director of Cherry Blossoms Village, to discuss these current trends and research findings.

M: Well... yes.., you know... I just read some fascinating new research done by some scientists who studied 96 non-institutionalized, independent centenarians. They wanted to discover what the real secrets were to becoming an active and healthy t00-year-old. They were quite surprised by what they found. Most people believe diet, exercise, and genetics are the common threads among most centenarians. However, these were not among the traits that all of these individuals had in common.

W: OK, then what were the common themes? What did the scientists find out?

M: Well, they uncovered 4 themes that all 96 of their centenarians had in common. These were optimism, engagement or commitment to something they were interested in, activity or mobility, and the strength to adapt to loss. All four of these themes were pervasive among the "oldest old" they studied.

W: Mr. Parnell, I understand also that you have centenarians living in your village who have very unconventional hobbies such as competitive swimming, auto racing, and horseback riding. Is this the norm?

M: Well, no, not exactly. Not all of them take it quite this far, but all of our residents do some sort of regular physical activity.

W: And what about diet?

M: Yes, I'm glad you raised that question. I have to agree with the results of the scientists who did the research. They found that the centenarians they studied had the highest caloric intake and ate the largest amount of fat.

W: Well... another thing I was thinking about is... Mr. Parnell, when speaking with the centenarians in the village, what do they tell you about diet and nutrition? I mean, do they offer advice about good eating habits and nutrition that may help someone live longer?

M: Oh, all of them basically do something different. Some of them eat a low-fat and low-calorie, unprocessed food diet. But others suggest that everyone eat spicy food, drink whisky, and have a large portion of sweet pork each day.

W: Earlier you mentioned that researchers found that the ability to cope with loss is another characteristic that healthy centenarians share.

M: Yes, exactly! I'll say this.., if you live to be 100, you are bound to lose a lot. It's natural. Most of our centenarians have lost a spouse, children, and siblings. Many have lost their peer group as well. But in spite of this, they are able to incorporate that losses in a positive way so they can go on with their lives.

W: One final question about the centenarians... So, if I want to live to be 100... what would they suggest I do?

M: Mmm, it's really hard to say.., but I suggest most of them would suggest that you work hard, stay busy, and always find something to laugh about.

Questions:

11. What is the main idea of the interview?

12.According to the interview, why is more research on the "oldest old" needed?

13.According to the interview, which of the following is not among the 4 themes in becoming a 100-year-old?

14.According to the interview, which of the following statements is TRUE?

15.According to the interview, which of the following is the suggestion the centenarians offer about living to be 100?

(31)

A.The unusual habits of the centenarians.

B.How to live to be 100?

C.The incredible groups of senior citizens.

D.How to be young forever?

第11题

People in business can use foresight to identify new products and services, as well as mar
kets for those products and services. An increase in minority populations in a neighborhood would prompt a grocer with foresight to stock more foods linked to ethnic tastes. An art museum director with foresight might follow trends in computer graphics to make exhibits more appealing to younger visitors.

Foresight may reveal potential threats that we can prepare to deal with before they become crises. For instance, a corporate manager with foresight might see an alarming rise in local housing prices that could affect the availability of skilled workers in the region. The public's changing values and priorities, as well as emerging technologies, demographic shifts, economic constraints (or opportunities), and environmental and resource concerns are all parts of the increasingly complex world system in which leaders must lead.

People in government also need foresight to keep systems running smoothly, to plan budgets, and to prevent wars. Government leaders today must deal with a host of new problems emerging from rapid advances in technology.

Even at the community level, foresight is critical: School officials, for example, need foresight to assess numbers of students to accommodate, numbers of teachers to hire, new educational technologies to deploy, and new skills for students (and their teachers) to develop.

Many of the best-known techniques for foresight were developed by government planners, especially in the military, when the post-World War Ⅱ atomic age made it critical to "think about the unthinkable" and prepare for it. Pioneering futurists at the RAND Corporation (the first "think tank") began seriously considering what new technologies might emerge in the future and how these might affect U.S. security. These pioneering futurists at RAND, along with others elsewhere, refined a variety of new ways for thinking about the future.

The futurists recognized that the future world is continuous with the present world, so we can learn a great deal about what may happen in the future by looking systematically at what is happening now. The key thing to watch is not events (sudden developments or one-day occurrences) but trends (long-term ongoing shifts in such things as population. land use, technology, and governmental systems). Using these techniques and many others, futurists now can tell us many things that may happen in the future. Some are nearly certain to happen, such as the continuing expansion in the world's population. Other events are viewed as far less likely, but could be extremely important if they do occur, such as an asteroid colliding with the planet.

Correctly exercising foresight is shown in the case of ______.

A.new products and services

B.an increase in minority populations

C.stocking more foods with ethnic tastes

D.the appealing art museum director
