听力原文: On Thanksgiving Day, Americans will eat turkeys. Some of the birds will be fried in oil or heated over hot coals. Most will be cooked in the oven.

Most farm-raised turkeys grow quickly. In 14 weeks, a female turkey weighs 7 kilograms and is ready for market. Hens are usually sold as whole birds. Male turkeys are usually grown for 18 weeks. They weigh more than 14 kilograms.

Some farms have started to raise what are called heritage turkeys. These more traditional kinds of birds take longer to raise and require more care. Some can be ordered over the Internet. The meat is at least four times the cost of other turkeys. Often, heritage turkeys are raised on organic farms, where no chemicals are used.

Two-thirds of the cost to raise a turkey is spent on load. Farmed turkeys cat a mixture d corn and soybean with added vitamins and minerals. It takes about 36 kilograms d food to raise a 14-kilngram bird.

About 8 percent d turkeys raised in the United States are exported. Mexico is the top importer. American turkey production is valued at 3,000 million dollars a year.

M: In my family we just have a big feast, too. We don't really stop and think about how Thanksgiving Day developed, how new colonists in Massachusetts had a three-day fest to give thanks for surviving the first terrible winter and for gathering their first corn harvest the following year.

W: Did you know that the original Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in July?

M: No, I thought Thanksgiving had always been in November.

W: The first Thanksgiving was celebrated on July 30, 1623. After that, Thanksgiving was celebrated at many different times. It wasn't until 1863 that Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November as a day of Thanksgiving, and this holiday has been celebrated in November ever since.

A.How and when we celebrate Thanksgiving.

B.The traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

听力原文: Thanksgiving Day is one of the biggest holidays in America. Every family comes together at their parents' house, and talks about their lives. They also have a big party. Usually, they cook a big turkey and many side dishes such as pumpkin pie. And they have a nice holiday with their family.

It originated in the 1600's. The Pilgrims, who were a group of people from England, arrived in America and some Indians helped them. The Indians taught them how to plant grain such as corn, vegetables and pumpkins. So, after that, the Pilgrims had a party for their Indian friends every year.

During this holiday, many shops have promotions and big sales. The day after Thanksgiving Day, which is called "Black Friday", almost every store displays their cheapest prices. Almost every American goes shopping to catch the cheapest goods before others. It should be described as a "Shopping War". If you wait and go shopping on Sunday, it will be too late! You won't be able to buy many things, because many goods will be sold out already. But, sometimes window shopping is a nice experience on Thanksgiving holiday.

In Korea, there is a very similar holiday, which is called "Chu-suk". This holiday also expresses thankfulness for ancestors. People will give thanks for the plentiful harvest that year. Almost all Koreans come together with their family, see relatives who live far away and have an ancestor-memorial service with many kinds of food. Chu-suk is almost the same as Thanksgiving Day.

Every human seems to feel thankfulness for their ancestors, and once a year, they celebrate their good harvest and health. The styles of these two holidays are a little different but the feelings and emotions are the same.

(33)

A.England.

B.Korea.

C.France.

D.America.

听力原文:This is Vanessa Garbo with the traffic report. All of the cars on the three major
freeways are moving swiftly this morning, as today is Thanksgiving holiday. On the western side of the city, traffic on the Donner Freeway and the Oppenheim Expressway is very light. On the eastern side of the city, cars on the Beaumont Overpass are moving without any problems. Downtown, there seems to be a traffic jam on the corner of Bishop and Montgomery. It appears there has been a minor traffic accident with no serious injuries. Elsewhere near Servo Street and Dante Avenue, a small pickup truck has flipped over and has caused one eastbound lane to be closed. Finally, the small group of 14 ducks we reported on earlier this morning has crossed French Lane safely. Two cars stopped for two minutes to allow the animals a safe crossing. For Chicago This Morning, I'm traffic reporter Vanessa Garbo.

It would be an exception of Sundays evenings in vacation breaks. Dining-halls like Brummie are open everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner, students simply present their meal tickets at the door and go to the line helping themselves to eat much food they wanted. 听力原文: W: I finished the stories about Columbus last time. Now I would like to give you
some details about the most truly American national holiday in the United States.

M: Is it Christmas?

W: No. Christmas is not a typical American holiday, but the holiday I'm talking here is closely connected with the earliest history of the country and it was first celebrated in 1621 by English settlers.

M: By English settlers? Why not native Indians?

W: Well, the settlers, or Pilgrims, fled from their native England to Holland in order to escape the religious prosecution. In 1620, they sailed to America on the Mayflower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. Storms forced them to sail away from their original destination, Jamestown in Virginia. And after a two-month voyage they landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in icy November.

M: I once read that during the first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation or epidemics.

W: True enough. Those who survived began sowing in the first spring. Luckily, a friendly Indian called Squanto taught them how to plant the corn and how to fertilize the soil.

M: So after the harvests in autumn, did the Pilgrims invite the Indians nearby to a meal for their help and friendship?

W: Yes, but to be more accurate, a thanksgiving feast.

M: I see, a day for giving thanks. Then on which day is it celebrated?

W: At that time, the Pilgrims objected to fixing the celebration by calendar. George Washington, the Public's first president, set Thursday, November 26, 1789, as the first national Thanksgiving Day. Even so, the controversy continued over the date: Thanksgiving. And since Lincoln's time, the celebration of Thanksgiving Day has been observed on the fourth Thursday of November until today.

M: What do we usually do on Thanksgiving Day?

W: The pattern has never changed through the years. Usually a family journey or a big family dinner is planned for the annual reunion. On the dinner table, you can find apples, oranges, chestnuts, plum puddings, mince pie, squash and so on. And the best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie.

M: My mouth is watering now, Mrs. Brown. They have been the most traditional and always my favorite food on Thanksgiving Day. My mum cooks the same as the Americans do that day though we're not native.

27.What did the woman most probably talk about last time?

28.Where was Thanksgiving Day first celebrated?

29.When was Thanksgiving Day set as a national day for the first time in American history?

D.The discovery of America.

听力原文:W: Will you be having Thanksgiving at home or will you be going to your mother's
place?

M: Mom and Dad want to have all the family back home this year, so that's where we'll be. How about you?

W: I plan on having everyone over to my place this year. It really is a lot of work, but I love having my family all together and I like to entertain.

M: You are such a good cook. I'll bet your family loves coming to your place, too.

W: I don't do all the cooking myself. I think everyone enjoys it a little more if they each bring something they have made.

M: Do you have traditional dishes that you serve every year? I know our family does.

W: Yes, we do. We always have turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy and, of course, sweet potatoes. I think those are traditional dishes for most families. There is a fruit salad that we have every year and every one looks forward to my pumpkin pie.

M: What do the men in your family do while the women are doing the cooking?

W: It's the same every year—football. They watch one game after another on Thanksgiving. I tell them that they ought to go out and get some exercise, but they just can' t get away from the TV.

M: I know a lot of men are like that. After dinner we like to go bowling. It's a fun thing to do together as a family. After a couple of games, we go back home and eat the left food.

W: I like that about Thanksgiving. We cook so much food that we have leftovers to last for several meals and I don't have to cook.

听力原文:Researchers do not know why people think some colours are warm and other colours

听力原文: Researchers do not know why people think some colours are warm and other colours are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange, and yellow are warm and that green, blue, and violet are cool. Perhaps warm colours remind people of warm days and cool colours remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is low during the winter, the sunlight appears quite blue. Because the sun is higher during the summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.

People associate colours with different holidays. For example, red is associated with Valentine's Day. On February 14th, Americans send red hearts to people they love. People associate orange with Halloween in October and Thanksgiving Day in November. On October 31 st, many Americans put large orange pumpkins in their windows for Halloween. Many people wear green on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. Violet is a dignified colour which is associated with Easter. On Easter Sunday, people decorate baskets with purple ribbons.

Many expressions in English use colours. These expressions show how people feel about the colours. For example, people associate red with a strong feeling like anger. When someone is very angry, people say that he or she sees red. Red is an active colour. A red-letter day is a lucky day. When criminals are caught in the middle of a crime, people say that they are caught red-handed. Green is the colour of grass and leaves. When someone grows plants well, people say he or she has green fingers. Blue is a sad, thoughtful colour. When someone is very sad, people say he or she is feeling blue. Blues is a kind of jazz that is usually very sad and slow.

(33)

A.A warm colour is a colour that is often used in restaurants.

B.A warm colour is a colour that gives off heat.

C.A warm colour is a colour near the red end of the light spectrum.

D.A warm colour is a colour that makes people feel upset.
