1. Australopithecus afarensis
They had ape-like faces and their brains were a third the size of modem humans' brains. They lived 3-3.9 million years ago. Fossils were found in Ethiopia in 1974.
2. Paranthropus boisei
Covered with fur, they had strong arms and gorilla-like faces. They lived 1-2.5 million years ago. Fossils were found in Tanzania in 1959.
3. Homo habilis
Homo habilis, which actually means "handy man", was the first species to make and use primitive stone tools. They lived 1.6-2.2 million years ago. Fossils were found in Tanzania in 1960.
4. Homo erectus
With skeletons very similar to those of modern humans, they were probably the first to use fire. They lived 30,000-1.8 million years ago. Fossils have been found in Africa and Asia since 1893.
5. Homo heidelbergensis
They were skilled hunters who used spears to kill animals. Their bodies were similar to ours, although more muscular and larger boned. They lived 200,000-500,000 years ago. Fossils have been found in Ethiopia, Germany, France and Spain since 1921.
6. Homo Neanderthal
Their brains were at least as large as those of the average modem humans, while their smaller bodies helped them deal with cold climates. They lived 30,000-230,000 years ago. Fossils have been found in France and Iraq since 1856.
What is considered more important in the development of the human?

The Bilingual Brain
When Karl Kim immigrated to the United States from Korea"s a teenager, he had a hard time learning English. Now he speaks it fluently, and he had a unique opportunity to see how our brains adapt to a second language. As a graduate student, Kim worked in the lab of Joy Hirsch, a neuroscientist in New York. __________ (46) They found evidence that children and adults don"t use the same parts of the brain when they leam a second language.
The researchers used an instrument called an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner to study the brains of two groups of bilingual people. __________ (47) The other consisted of people who, like Kim, learned their second language later in life. People from both groups were placed inside the MRI scanner. This allowed Kim and Hirsch to see which parts of the brain were getting more blood and were more active. They asked people from both groups to think about what they had done the day before, first in one language and then the other. They couldn"t speak out loud because any movement would disrupt the scanning.
Kim and Hirsch looked specifically at two language centers in the brain —— Broca"s area, which is believed to control speech production, and Wemicke"s area, which is thought to process meaning.
Kim and Hirsch found that both groups of people used the same part of Wernicke"s area no matter what language they were speaking. __________ (48)
People who learned a second language as children used the same region in Broca"s area for both their first and second languages. People who learned a second language later in life used a different part of Broca"s area for their second language. __________ (49) Hirsch believes that when language is first being programmed in young children, their brains may mix the sounds and structures of all languages in the same area. Once that programming is complete, the processing of a new language must be taken over by a different part of the brain.
A second possibility is simply that we may acquire languages differently as children than we do as adults. Hirsch thinks that mothers teach a baby to speak by using different methods involving touch, sound, and sight. __________ (50)

Public Health in Rome
The Romans built great "aqueducts" to carry fresh water from the mountains to the cities. Many of these aqueducts are still standing today. The Romans also built great pipes under the ground to carry away the sewage(污水).In Rome, these sewage pipes (sewers)are still used today; it is 2,000 years old.The Roman Emperors even set up a government health service. They built the first great public hospitals in Europe, and they paid doctors to look after poor people. When the Roman Empire fell to pieces, these civilized methods of treatment disappeared from most of Europe, for more than a thousand years.People went back to the old ways. They lived in dirty conditions which helped to cause diseases; and they asked God to cure the diseases. They shut up mentally sick people in prisons.Or they burnt them alive because they were supposed to have magic power. And the work of the Greek and Roman doctors was lost.
Over a thousand years ago, the Arabs moved into many of the Mediterranean coun-tries.They took big parts of the old Roman lands. They translated the Greek and Roman medical books into Arabic.Arab, doctors themselves made many new discoveries. When civilization at last came back to Europe, men once again translated the Greek and Roman works on medicine into Latin.Slowly European doctors discovered again the things that the Greeks and Romans had known so long ago. They found out more about the way the body works, the way our blood goes round our bodies, the way our nerves send messages from our brains to our muscles, the way these muscles move our bodies.
第 41 题 The word "aqueduct" probably means__________
A.something which was built long ago.
B.something invented by a Roman Emperor.
C.a big pipe under the ground,
D.something built to supply clean water for the citizens.

【29】for us, we live in a universe that has at least important parts that are knowable. Our common-sense experience and our evolutionary history have【30】us to understand something of the workaday world. When we go into other realms, however, common sense and ordinary intuition【31】highly unreliable guides. It is stunning that as we go close to the speed of light our mass【32】indefinitely, we shrink toward zero thickness【33】the direction of motion, and time for us comes as near to stopping as we would like. Many people think that this is silly, and every week【34】I get a letter from someone who complains to me about it. But it is virtually certain consequence not just of experiment but also of Albert Einstein's【35】analysis of space and time called the Special Theory of Relativity. It does not matter that these effects seem unreasonable to us. We are not【36】the habit of traveling close to the speed of light. The testimony of our common sense is suspect at high velocities.
The idea that the world places restrictions on【37】humans might do is frustrating. Why shouldn't we be able to have intermediate rotational positions? Why can't we【38】faster than the speed of light? But【39】we can tell, this is the way the universe is constructed. Such prohibitions not only【40】us toward a little humility; they also make the world more knowable.
