There are,(56), differences in the standard deviations(偏差)or variability of the(57) of the two sexes in many IQ tests,(58)men showing the greater variation. The(59)of many IQ test scores are such(60)they approximate to the normal curve(正规曲线). If we regard some arbitrary lower score on a test as a classification like "educational subnormal(智力上逊常的人)" (ESN) and some equally arbitrary(61)score as "gifted", we then find that there is higher ratio of ESN males to women and likewise we(62)that there are more gifted men than women, even though the average scores are the same.
The(63)of men and women are known to differ somewhat in size, with women having about 200g less tissue(64)the other hand, they also tend to(65)less body mass, and over the phylogenetic(系统发育的)scale, the best index of species intelligence is the ratio of body mass to brain size.

For my part, I have never presumed my mind to be more perfect than average in any way; I have, in fact, often wished that my thoughts were as quick, or my imagination as precise and distinct, or my memory as capacious or prompt, as those of some other men.
And I know of no other qualities than these which make for the perfection of the mind; for as to reason, or good sense, inasmuch as it alone makes us men and distinguishes us from the beasts, I am quite willing to believe that it is whole and entire in each of us, and to follow in the common opinion of the philosophers who say that there are differences of more or less only among the accidents, and not among the forms, or natures, of the individuals of a single species.
According to the author, the three elements that comprise the perfect mind are ______.
A.tenacity of thought, capacious memory, quickness of mind
B.precise imagination, tenacity of memory, quickness of thought
C.quickness of wit, ease of conscience, quickness of thought
D.promptness of memory, distinctness of imagination, quickness of thought

It has also provided the basis for the traditional methodology of science. It includes objective observation, description of some phenomena, the statements of hypotheses(假说) about the events observed and possible relationships among them, the use of these to predict future events, the evidence of the hypotheses and the construction of a theory based on the evidence of the hypotheses.
But the classic "scientific method" has been criticized from a variety of points. To begin with, it is obvious that the "objectivity" of science strictly characterizes only the lowest order of scientific activity—observation. Even here it is doubtful whether anyone can be a truly impartial observer of events.
What someone chooses to observe and the way one observes it must, after all. in part be a reflection of experience and of ideas as to what is important. Consider, for example, the different ways in which an artist and a layman look at a painting and the different reactions they have to the same work. The construction of hypotheses and theories reflects the scientist's interpretation of what he or she has observed even more clearly than observation. At this stage of the scientific method, an element of subjectivity is inevitably present. This can most easily be seen in the extreme case of scientists of truly creative genius. Galileo, for example, challenged the scientists of his day with his hypothesis that the earth revolved around the sun. A twentieth century example is Watson and Crick's discovery of the molecular structure of DNA. Obviously, science may involve not only careful observation but also a willingness to be creative.
