In general, people talk about two groups of colors: warm colors and cool colors. Researche

rs in psychology think that there are also two groups of people: people who prefer warm colors and people who prefer cool colors.

The warm colors are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colors and a lot of light, people usually want to be active. People think that red, for example, is exciting. Sociable people, those who like to be with others, like red. The cool colors are green, blue and violet. These colors, unlike warm colors, are relaxing. Where there are cool colors, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue.

Red may be exciting, but one researcher says that time seems to pass more slowly in a room with warm colors than in a room with cool colors. He suggests that a warm color, such as red or orange is a good color for a living room or restaurant. People who are relaxing or eating do not want time to pass quickly. Cool colors arc better for offices of factories if the people who are working there want time to pass quickly.

Researchers do not know why people think some colors are warm and other colors are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange, and yellow are warm and that green, blue, and violet are cool. Perhaps warm colors remind people of warm days and the cool colors remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is higher during summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.

Which of the following colors belong to cool colors?

A.Yellow, green.

B.Blue, violet.

C.Black, blue.

D.Brown, white.

Approaches to Understanding Intelligences

It pays to be smart, but we are not all smart in the same way. You may be a talented musician, but you might not be a good reader. Each of us is different. Psychologists disagree about what is intelligence and what are talents or personal abilities. Psychologists have two different views on intelligence. Some believe there is one general intelligence. Others believe there are many different intelligences.
Some psychologists say there is one type of intelligence that can be measured with IQ tests.
These psychologists support their view with research that concludes that people who do well on one kind of test for mental ability do well on other tests. They do well on tests using words, numbers or pictures. They do well on individual or group tests, and written or oral tests. Those who do poorly on one test, do the same on all tests.
Studies of the brain show that there is a biological basis for general intelligence. The brain of intelligent people use less energy during problem solving. The brain waves of people with higher intelligence show a quicker reaction. Some researchers conclude that differences in intelligence result from differences in the speed and effectiveness of information processing by the brain.
Howard Gardner, a psychologist at the Harvard School of Education, has four children. He believes that all children are different and shouldn&39;t be tested by one intelligence test. Although Gardner believes general intelligence exists, he doesn&39;t think it tells much about the talents of a person outside of formal schooling. He thinks that the human mind has different intelligences.
These intelligences allow us to solve the kinds of problems we are presented with in life. Each of us has different abilities within these intelligences. Gardner believes that the purpose of school should be to encourage development of all of our intelligences.
Gardner says that his theory is based on biology. For example, when one .part of the brain is injured, other parts of the brain still work. People who cannot talk because of brain damage can still sing. So, there is not just one intelligence to lose. Gardner has identified 8 different kinds of intelligence: linguistic, mathematical, spatial, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, body-kinesthetic(身体动觉的), and naturalistic.

What is the main idea of this passage? 查看材料

A.How to understand intelligence

B.The importance of intelligence

C.The development of intelligence tests

D.How to become intelligent

听力原文: Social life in America varies tremendously from office to office. Big corporations may have dubs, sports teams, trips, dance classes, or other employee activities which you can join or not as you like, while small companies usually can' t afford these activities.

In general, people go to lunch with each other by invitation when they fed like it. Usually people of higher ranks would invite those of lower ranks rather than the other way around, but lines are not closely drawn. Except for special occasions, everyone pays for himself or herself regardless of whether or not an invitation is offered.

It is quite acceptable for men and women colleagues, single or married, to go out together for lunch. This may be the extent to which your office friends will invite you. Although in general Americans readily take people home with them, they often do not want to mix business and social life. If this is the case in your place of work, you will have to seek your friendships through other channels.

(30)

A.Employees in big corporations enjoy more activities.

B.Employees in small companies enjoy more activities.

C.Employees in big corporations make more friends.

Britain has laws to make sure that women have the same opportunities as men in education,
jobs and training. But it's still unusual to women doing dirty or heavy jobs.

Nancy Florey is a car maintenance engineer in London. She used to be a secretary. Jessica Human, a journalist with The Observer, a Sunday newspaper, asked her why she wanted to work with cars.

"My first reason was independence," she said. "I also wanted to use my hands, and I like learning about how things work. Many people refer to have a woman repair their cars, too. "

Nancy didn't find it easy to become a car maintenance engineer. She went to a Government Skill Center-a special sort of college where people can learn a new job-for twenty weeks. "For ten weeks I was the only woman among four hundred men, and some of them were rude to me, just because of my sex. It was also very tiring -from 8 in the morning to 5 at night, with only 30 minutes for lunch."

Now Nancy works freelance-that is, she's self-employed, working for herself and not for a garage or a company.

Jessica Human also spoke to Marina, who works as a general builder in Sheffield, an industrial town in the north of England. Like Nancy, Marina used to be a secretary. "I didn't enjoy it at all," she said, "I wanted to do more practical work, and I wanted to be self- employed."

Marina joined a women's building co-operative, and she learnt her job from other people and from experience. However, many of the women in her group have been specially trained. Most of the jobs they do are improvements to buildings and general repairs.

"People often say, 'Oh, women aren't strong enough,' but I don't think strength is important," said Marina. "The important thing is to get used to doing a different sort of work."

Marina would like more women to come into the building industry. "Everything built at the moment is a product of man's world, ff women become builders, they will be able to understand the production of their houses and their towns."

According to the passage, what do British laws ensure women?

A.They ensure that women get higher pay than men.

B.They ensure that women enjoy more freedom than men.

C.They ensure that women do whatever they like to do.

D.They ensure that women have equal chances with men in education and work.

There is more than one (21) of organisational culture in the corporate world. This doesn't mean strong versus (22) although those are certainly two general categories for organisational culture.

While different theorists and different companies even might have differing opinions on the types of organisational cultures out there, there is a general consensus (23) four different types of organisational culture. Most companies or corporations in their style. or plan can fall (24) one of these four general types.

One type of organisational culture is the "tough-guy culture" or "macho culture." One of the most common aspects of the tough-guy or macho culture is the quick feedback and (25) rewards. The pace can be break-neck at times, but the obvious reward of the action is seen very quickly.

Another type of organisational culture is the "work hard/play hard" organisational cul ture. This type of organisational culture that doesn't (26) a lot of risks, but it does take a few, and all receive fast feedback. This is something most likely to be seen in a very large company which is dependent on strong customer service.

A third type of organisational culture is the "bet your company culture." This is a type of company where huge decisions are made over high stakes endeavors. In this type of cultuure, the (27) results of these decisions may not be seen for months or (28) years.

A fourth type of organisational culture is the "process culture." A process culture is most often found in organisations where there is actually no feedback. This is (29) a good culture. In this type of organisational culture people are so obsessed (30) the process of how things are done that the focus is lost on what the goal is. Process organisational culture is a synonym for bureaucracy.
