Air is all around us. It is around us when we walk and play. From the moment we are born,
air surrounds us. When we sit down, it is around us. When we go to bed, air is also around us. No matter where we are on earth, air surrounds us. We live in air.All living things need air. Living things cannot live without air. We can go without food or water for a few days, but we cannot live for more than a few minutes without air. When we are working or running, we need more air. So we breathe faster than usual. When we are asleep, we need less air.

People can live without food or water for______.

A.a few months

B.a few weeks

C.a few days

People find that like humans chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use "tools": they strip twigs (小树枝) and use them to take out termites(白蚁) from their nests. The chimpanzees and the termites both live in social groups. Chimpanzee females live on individual home ranges within a territory that is defended by a group of related males. Termites live in a colony with three classes: queen, workers and soldiers. Chimpanzees can be trained to respond in accordance with different symbolic gestures.

So if we can build power stations, why can't chimpanzees? A major reason is that they lack a laryrx(喉) and a mouth that make it possible to pronounce clearly and distinctly a wide range of distinguishable sounds. Without these they are doomed to making little progress. One can scarcely imagine us building and operating power stations or implementing a system of justice as intricate as ours without us having an extremely complex system of communication like that provided by our speech. Far simpler tasks require language., language for learning, language for planning, language for co-operation. Without speech it is, indeed, difficult to refer to anything that is removed from us in space and time, anything that we cannot point to here and now. This becomes clear as soon as you try to arrange to meet a friend outside the town hall at seven o'clock without saying or writing anything.

Language allows human beings to learn and adapt to changing circumstances far more quickly than would be achieved by evolution. A word of warning passed from father to son is a much more direct and efficient way of adapting the species to its environment than is a process of natural selection. Human language is infinitely versatile. Honey-bees have a remarkable way of letting others know the direction in which a source of food lies and how far away it is by means of a "dance". But they could not begin to discuss the merits of other foodstuffs or alternative ways of constructing their homes.

Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that______.

A.animals can be very clever

B.the difference between chimpanzees and termites can be very small

C.chimpanzees and the human beings are very much alike

D.the human race is not unique in exhibiting some features of the way of life

Unlike any other creature on this planet, humans can learn and under stand, without havin
g experienced. They can think themselves into other peoples places. Of course, this is power that is morally neutral. One might use (1)______ such an ability to manipulate or control, just as much as to understand or sympathy. (2)______ And many prefer to exercise their imaginations at all. They choose to re- (3) main comfortably within the bounds of their own experience, never trouble (4)______ to wonder how it would feel to have been born other than they are. They can refuse to hear screams or to peer inside cages; they can open their minds and (5)______ hearts to any suffering that does not touch them personally; they can refuse to know. I might be attempted to envy people who can live that way, except (6)______ that I do not think they have any fewer nightmares than I did. Choosing to (7)______ live in narrow spaces leads to a form. of mental agoraphobia, and that brings its own terrors. I think the willfully imaginative see more monsters. They are (8)______ often more afraid. What is more, those who choose not to empathise enable real monsters. For without ever committing to an act of outright evil our- (9)______ selves, we collude with it, through our own apathy. One of the many things I learned at the end of that Classics corridor down which I ventured at the age of 18, in search of something I could not then define, was this, written by the Greek author Plutarch: What we achieve inwardly will change out reality. Text 2

Bacteria are microscopic organisms which live on the surface of objects. They are one of the most ancient living things, which exist on this planet for nearly 4,000 million years. Do you know the size of bacteria? It can only be measured in microns. Maybe you have not a standard in your mind how long a micron is. One micron is a thousandth of a millimeter, which equals about the diameter of a pinhead. Therefore, even if we enlarged the rounded bacter:ium a thousand times, it would only be the size of a pinhead. We barely see bacteria by a magnification an ordinary microscope of 100 times, even if we try, we cannot make out anything of their structure. There are normally millions of them together, for they can multiply really fast.

Scientists have found that some bacteria have attached to wavy-looking "hairs" called flagella. The flagella rotate, pushing the bacteria through the water. Others can glide along over surfaces by some little-understood mechanism. Bacteria are so small that they are influenced by the movements of the chemical molecules around them. They are active all the time. Even the bacteria without flagella often bound about in the water. They are pushed here and there, colliding with the watery molecules.

Bacteria cannot be detected because they don't produce bad odor or change the color or texture of the food. Therefore, when people eat the food with many bacteria, they are likely to get hepatitis A, acute gastroenteritis and a host of other illnesses. Many households have refrigerators to prevent from bacteria. Of course, freezing food slows or stops the growth of bacteria, however, when food is thawed, the bacteria will become reactivated. Bacteria can not be totally destroyed before the food is thoroughly cooked. We need to know that not all bacteria are in connection with illness.Just some bacteria can cause disease. They are called pathogenic bacteria. Fortunately our immune system can protect us from them.

Bacteria are prokaryotes (single cells that do not contain a nucleus). It may seem weird to classify organisms according to such details, but with or without a nucleus is not trivial at all. The division between prokaryotes and eukaryotes (all organisms with a nucleus inside their cells) is of extreme importance in biology, and is the result of a major evolutionary breakthrough. Change is the principle--and the process--that enables us to move on and upward growth and
change, of continuous improvement. To make meaningful progress, we need to consider one other aspect of change as it is used only by human our thought. In the words of Madame, "The voice of thought is so soft that it is easy to forget about it, but it is also so clear that it is impossible to misunderstand it."

Just as the education of nerve is most important to the excellent athlete and education of the mind is vital to the scholar, education of the thought is vital to the truly highly effective person.

Training and educating the thought, however, requires even greater concentration, more balanced discipline, more consistently honest living. It requires regular feasting on inspiring literature, thinking noble thoughts and, above all, living in harmony with its still small voice.

Just as junk food and lack of exercise can ruin an athlete's condition, those things that are not decent, crude, or unhealthy can lead to an inner darkness and make us wonder "What is right and wrong?"

In the words of Dag Hammarskjold, You cannot play with the animal in you without becoming wholly animal, play with falsehood without losing your right to truth, play with cruelty without losing your sensitivity of mind. He who wants to keep his garden tidy doesn't reserve a plot for weeds.

Once we are self-aware, we must choose purposes and principles to live by; otherwise the hole will be filled, and we will lose our self-awareness and become like groveling animals that live mainly for survival.

And there is no easy way in developing them. The Law of the Harvest governs; we will always reap what we sow--no more, no less. I believe that as we grow and develop, an increasingly educated thought will push us along the path of personal freedom, security, wisdom, and power. Moving upward requires us to learn, commit, and do on increasingly higher planes. To keep progressing, we must learn, commit, and do--learn, commit, and do--and learn, commit, and do again.

What is the topic the author is trying to get to in paragraph 1?

A.Continuous improvement.

B.Upward growth and change.

C.Change of thought.

D.The voice of thought.

第9题

Joy in living comes from having fine emotions, trusting them, giving them the freedom of a
bird in the open. Joy in living can never be assumed as a pose, or put on from the outside as a mask. People who have this joy do not need to talk about it; they radiate it. They just live out their joy and let it splash its sunlight and glow into other lives as naturally as a bird sings. And those who have and exhibit the joy of living are never those who have been without care, sorrow, failure, disappointment, and discouragement. They are rather those who have suffered and conquered, and who are willing to bear their share of the vicissitudes of life uncomplainingly. The joy of living never comes to the frivolous, the superficial, the selfish. We can never get it by working for it directly. It comes, like happiness, to those who are aiming at something higher. It is a by-product of great, simple living. The joy of living comes from what we put into living, not from what we seek to get from it.
