听力原文:When Rome emerged as a world power, the difficulties of making a calendar were we

ll known, but the Romans complicated their lives because of their superstition that even numbers were unlucky. Hence their months were 29 or 31 days long, with the exception of February, which had 28 days. However, four months of 31 days, seven months of 29 days, and one month of 28 days added up to only 355 days. Therefore the Romans invented an extra month called Mercedonius of 22 or 23 days. It was added every second year.

One year, made 445 days long by imperial decree, brought the calendar back in step with the seasons. Then the solar year (with the value of 365 days and 6 hours) was made the basis of the calendar. The months were 30 or 31 days in length, and to take care of the 6 hours, every fourth year was made a 366-day year. Moreover, Caesar decreed the year began with the first of January, not with the vernal equinox in late March.

This calendar was named the Julian calendar, after Julius Caesar, and it continues to be the calendar of the Eastern Orthodox churches to this day.

听力原文: Architecture is to building as literature is to the printed word. The best build
ings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use. They then survive not only as beautiful objects, but as documents of the history of cultures. These achievements are never wholly the work of individuals. Architecture is a social art.

The revival of classical culture brought about an entirely new age, not only in philosophy and literature but in the visual arts as well. In architecture, the principles and styles of ancient Greece and Rome were brought back to life and reinterpreted. They remained dominant until the 20th century.

Many kinds of stone are used as building materials. Stone and marble were chosen for important monuments because they are not burnable and can be expected to endure. Stone architecture was often blended with stone sculpture. The use of stone has declined, however, because a number of other materials are more adaptable to industrial use.

The complexity of modern life calls for a variety of buildings. More people live in mass housing and go to work in large office buildings; they spend their income in large shopping centres, send their children to many different kinds of schools, and when they are sick they go to specialized hospitals and clinics. All these different types of buildings accumulated experiences needed by their designers.

By the middle of the 20th century, modern architecture, which was influenced by new technology and mass production, was dealing with increasingly complex social needs. Important characteristics of modern architectural works are expanses of glass and the use of reinforced concrete.

(30)

A.A government document.

B.A literary work.

C.A social art.

D.An individual's creation.

听力原文: Cities try to improve their transportation in order for cars, buses and trucks to travel easily on them. Large highways run through cities, so people can travel from their home to their job quickly. Also, cities have installed traffic lights to control the vehicles on the highways. Two cities experimented with public buses to reduce the number of automobiles on that street. In Rome, passengers on city buses did not have to pay for a bus ticket. In Stockholm, people paid a low price for a one-year ticket to travel on any bus, trolley car or train in the city. Finally, to increase the safety of people who walk, many cities have closed some streets to vehicles.

(33)

A.Cars, buses, and trucks.

B.Highways built outside of the city.

C.Traffic lights.

D.Reducing the number of buses and cars.

听力原文:W: Yes, sir. You rang?

M: Yes, I wonder if you could bring me another martini.

W: Certainly. Would you like anything else?

M: Well, I suppose this is kind of foolish, but my son-in-law is supposed to meet me in London at the airport. Do you think he'll be able to find me?

W: I'm sure he will. You don't have to worry about that. Are you going to be visiting him?

M: Yes, I've never seen my grandson. In fact I've never seen my son-in-law, either.

W: I think you'll have a wonderful time in London. It's beautiful. Is this your first time abroad?

M: No, I saw quite a bit of Europe before. Rome, Berlin, Paris, places like that, but never London.

W: Oh, then you have flown before, too.

M: No, that was during the Second World War and I went on a troopship.

W: Things are quite different in Europe nowadays.

M: Fm sure they are. I'm really anxious to get there.

W: Well, it's 4: 00 now and we'll be there at 6: 00.

M: I plan to stay five weeks. I was a teacher but I'm retired now. My wife is dead so I can go where I want when I want.

W: I think you're going to have a good time. And don't worry about being met. I'll bet your daughter will be there, too.

M: I hope so, but I don't know if she will.

W: I'll go to get your martini for you. Be back in a minute.

Where does this dialogue take place?

A.At the airport.
