第三节 短文理解2

阅读下列短文,从[A]、[B]、[C]三个选项中选择一个正确答案。

Dina Borzekowski made a study of a group of third-grade students from six American schools. During a school year, nearly 400 students and their parents were asked to report on whether they had such things as televisions and computers in the home, as well as how often the child used them. The children's language ability was tested (测验) twice over the year. Children who had a television set in the bedroom but did not have a computer at home scored (得分) the lowest, while students without TV in the bedroom but with a computer at home scored the highest. Students who had a television in the bedroom over the school year scored lower than those who had their TV taken away during the same time.

"This study suggests that taking TV sets out of children's bedrooms, or not putting them there, may be helpful," said Borzekowski. "While this study does not prove (证明) that bedroom TV was the reason for the lower test scores, it suggests that children shouldn't have TV in their bedrooms. It also suggests that a home computer may help a child's test scores. The best way was having both: no TV in the bedroom and also a home computer to use. "

Who took part in the study?

A.Teachers and parents.

B.Students and their teachers.

C.Students and their parents.

Malnutrition (营养不良)

A new World Bank report warns that children who don't get enough good food in the first two years of life suffer lasting damage. They may be underdeveloped or underweight. They may suffer from poor health or limited intelligence. In addition, poorly nourished children are more likely to drop out of school and earn less money as adults.

The report notes that too little food is not the only cause of poor nutrition. Many children who live in homes with plenty of foods utter for other reasons. For example, the study says that mothers often fail to give their newly born babies their first breast milk. This milk-like substance is called colostrum. It is full of nutrients that improve a baby's ability to fight infections and disease.

The study also links malnutrition to economic growth in poor countries. A lack of nutrition in early children can cost developing nations up to three percent of their yearly earnings. Many of these same countries have economies that are growing at a rate of two or three percent yearly. The study suggests that poor countries could possibly double their economic growth if they improved nutrition.

Africa and South Asia are affected the most by poor nutrition. The study says about half of all children in India do not get enough good food. The World Bank study also notes that rates of malnutrition in South Asia are almost double those in central and southern Africa. Other parts of world are also severely affected, including Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Guatemala and Peru.

The study recommends that developing countries change their policies to deal with malnutrition. Instead of directly providing food, the study suggests educational programs in health care.

World Bank nutrition specialist Meera Shekar said the period of life between pregnancy and two years was extremely important. Governments with limited resources should take direct action to improve nutrition for children during this period.

What is NOT the symptom of lasting damage?

A.They may not get enough good nutrition in the first two years.

B.They may be underdeveloped or underweight.

C.They may feel painful from poor health or limited intelligence.

D.They mybe more likely to drop out of school or earn less money as adults.

Europa’ swateryunderworld

Europa, one of Jupiter’s 63 known moons, looks bright and icy on the surface. But appearances can be deceiving: Mileswithin its cracked, frigid shell, Europa probably hides giant pools of liquidwater. Where scientists find liquid water, they hope to find life as well.

Since we can’t go diving into Europa’sdepths just yet, scientists instead have to investigate the moon’s surface forclues to what lies beneath. In a new study, scientists investigated one group of strange ice patterns on Europa and concluded that the formations mark the top of an underground pool that holds as much water as the U.S. Great Lakes.

Pictures of Europa, which is slightlysmaller than Earth’s moon, clearly show a tangled, icy mishmash of lines andcracks known as “chaos terrains.” These chaotic places cover more than half ofEuropa. For more than 10 years, scientists have wondered what causes theformations. The new study suggests that they arise from the mixing of vastunderground stores of liquid water with icy material near the surface.

For scientists who suspect that Europaalso may be hiding life beneath its icy surface, the news about the new lake isexciting.

“It would be great if these lakesharbored life,” Britney Schmidt, a planetary scientist who worked on the study, told Science News. “But even if they didn’t, they say that Europa is doingsomething interesting and active right now.”

Schmidt,a scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, and her colleagueswanted to know how chaos terrains form. Since they couldn’t rocket to Europa tosee for themselves, they searched for similar formations here on Earth. Theystudied collapsed ice shelves in Antarctica and icy caps on volcanoes in Iceland. Thosefeatures on Earth formed when liquid water mixed with ice. The scientists nowsuspect something similar might be happening on Europa: that as water and iceof different temperatures mingle and shift, the surface fractures. This wouldexplain the jumbled ice sculptures.“Fracturing catastrophically disruptsthe ice in the same way that it causes ice shelves to collapse on Earth,”Schmidt told Science News. She and her team found that the process could becausing chaos terrains to form. quickly on Europa.

The new study suggests that on thismoon, elements such as oxygen from the surface blend with the deep bodies ofwater. That mixture may create an environment that

supports life.

The liquid water of an underground pool of Europa is estimated xxxxx of the US Greatlakes.

B. Wrong

听力原文: A study published in September suggests there is a surprising way to get people to avoid unhealthy foods: change their memories. Scientist Elizabeth Loftus of the University of California at Irvine asked volunteers to answer some questions on their personalities and food experiences. "One week later," Loftus says, "we told those people we'd fed their answers into our smart computer and it came up with an account of their early childhood experiences." Some accounts included one key additional detail. "You got sick after eating strawberry ice-cream." The researchers then changed this detail into a manufactured memory through leading questions—Who were you with? How did you feel? By the end of the study, up to 41% of those given a false memory believed strawberry ice-cream once made them sick, and many said they'd avoid eating it.

When Loftus published her findings, she started getting calls from people begging her to make them remember hating chocolate or French fries. Unfortunately, it's not that easy. False memories appear to work only for foods you don't cat on a regular basis. But most important, it is likely that false memories can be implanted only in people who are unaware of the mental control. And lying to a patient is immoral, even if a doctor believes it's for the patient's benefit.

Loftus says there's nothing to stop parents from trying it with their overweight children. "I say, wake up—parents have been lying about Father Christmas for years, and nobody seems to mind. If they can prevent diseases caused by fatness and all the other problems that come with that, you might think that's a more moral lie. Decide that for yourself."

(33)

A.To improve her computer program.

B.To find out their attitudes towards food.

C.To find out details she can make use of.

D.To predict what food they'll like in the future.
