听力原文： After years of failing to take the disease seriously, Beijing has become a late convert to the cause of HIV/Aids education, prevention and treatment.
In recent months health authorities have stepped up plans to distribute free condoms, promote needle exchanges, provide free antiretroviral drugs to patients and boost Aids awareness through education campaigns. Yet, Beijing had better be ready for an epic battle if it is to prevent a full-scale crisis. Already, more than 200,000 people have died of Aids in China and a further 840,000 axe living with HIV/Aids. The UN warns that, unchecked, the disease could claim 10 million victims by 2010.
The world's first HIV case was discovered in America in 1981. Four years later, China discovered its first HIV case. However, long after that, ignorance about how the disease is transmitted remains widespread. Disseminating knowledge of how HIV is transmitted and finding ways to cheaply distribute antiretroviral drugs for infected patients are among tasks facing health authorities, who are now applied to preventing an oncoming disaster.
Although China is coming late to the Aids war, it can benefit from the experience of other countries and it can also benefit from the increased global funding and willingness to share expertise that is available today. Therefore, we have a good reason to believe that China will eventually succeed in its effort to restrain the spread of Aids.

A Recipe for Success
Not many companies can boast of having been in business for more than three and a half centuries. Yuzaburo Mogi, president and CEO of Kikkoman Corp. — the world's leading manufacturer of soy sauce — is well aware however that the company can't rest on its laurels if it's to successfully meet the challenge posed by its thousands of competitors globally. But Mogi — the first Japanese person to ever earn an MBA from the Columbia Business School in 1961 — loves a challenge.
He learned American management methods through his studies at Colombia, as well as practical marketing know-bow thanks to his experience as a product demonstrator, serving soy sauce in supermarkets and at international trade fairs during his summer breaks from his studies at Columbia, which has been a source of inspiration for him through the years. In 1957, the company established Kikkoman International, Inc. in San Francisco in order to launch full-scale sales and marketing activities in the US. Test kitchens were built and home economists were recruited to come up with recipes for American-style. dishes using soy sauce. The recipes were introduced in newspaper articles, on tiny recipe books attached to the necks of soy sauce bottles, and in cookbooks.
Kikkoman's strategy of building a global company that acts locally has contributed greatly to its growth. Kikkoman hires local people to operate its plants outside Japan, and develops marketing campaigns that appeal to consumers in overseas markets. The goal is to have consumers identify Kikkoman's products as the leading locally made products in its field. "We have seen our soy sauce becoming more and more a part of the American lifestyle," Mogi says. As he notes, Kikkoman has captured 56% of the US market, double that of its nearest competitor, and the company has the top share of the world market.
Kikkoman is also a leader when it comes to quality. Its soy sauce is naturally brewed, unlike many of its rival products, which are chemically produced. Kikkoman's commitment to high quality has made it an unparalleled brand in recent decades, as consumers in the US and other countries have become more health-conscious and aware of the importance of truly natural food.
"That is why our soy sauce has established itself as an all-purpose seasoning, a dependable ingredient, in kitchens around the globe," Mogl says.

Previous generations of seientists would have killed to know what we know. For the first time in history， we have a pretty good idea of the material content of the Universe， our position within it and how the whole thing came into being.
In these times of exploding knowledge there is a definite need to take stock and assemble what we know in a palatable （受欢迎的） form_________（46）
The essays in The Scientific American Book of the Cosmos have been selected by David Levy，co-discoverer of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9， which in 1994 struck Jupiter with the violenee of several full-scale nuclear wars. _________（47） This is certainly a great collection of essays， but it is not， as the book promises， a seamless （完美的，无缝隙的） synthesis of our current knowledge.
Nobody can fault the range of articles Levy has included. There are essays on the planets，moons and assorted debris （碎片） in the Solar System， and on our Galaxy， the Milky Way. _________（48）
The contributors， too， are stars in their own fields. Not many books can boast eha"pters written by such giants as Erwin Sehrodinger and Francis Crick. So much for the book"s content. But Levy has not succeeded in providing an accurate synthe-sis of our current knowledge of the eosmos， which the book jacket promises. Gathering together previously published articles inevitably leaves subject gaps， missing explanations and so on._________ （49） But there isn"t one. In fact， surprisingly for a book so densely packed with infor-mation， there is no index.
Collecting essays in this way is clearly a good publishing wheeze （巧妙的注意）. But this approach shortchanges the public， who would be better served by an account moulded into a seamless whole._________（50） However， for the next edition， please， please can we have an index？
