听力原文:W: Well, tonight we have Andrew Green in our studio to talk about music. Andrew i
s a great guitarist and has his own band. So, Andrew, welcome.

M: Thanks a lot. My pleasure to be here tonight.

W: Now, Andrew, perhaps you could tell us something about the future trends for the global music industry?

M: Sure. Well, from my perspective as a musician, [19] I can see a dramatic increase in the popularity of Latin music, even now. If this trend continues, I imagine the popularity of Salsa dancing will also rise dramatically. This may result in a slight decrease in the popularity of other types of music.

W: What do you think of the sudden drop in interest in classical music?

M: I think this trend has been in the works for quite some time. As more and more varieties of music become available to consumers, the classic standards may suffer in the popularity contest. [20] I think the drop in interest of classical music hasn't been sudden at all, it's been slow and steady for many years now.

W: Is there any type of music that is consistently popular with most people?

M: If you look at the numbers, rock and roll music has remained a steady constant through the years. I expect the popularity of rock and roll will stay the same in the coming years.

W: It's said that [21] rock music might make one livelier and happier. What do you think of it?

M: That's tree. Research suggests that music can influence a person's feelings and character. [21] There's clear evidence that people who listen lively music are lively people.

(20)

A.Salsa dancing.

B.Classical music.

C.Rock and roll.

D.Latin music.

听力原文: A critical factor that plays a part in people's susceptibility to colds is age. The University of the Michigan School of Public Health has done a study that revealed some general rules for the public. It says that infants are the most cold-ridden group. On an average, infants will catch more than six colds during their early years. Besides, boys have more colds than girls when they are under the age of three. When they grow older than three years old, it is easier for girls to catch cold than the boys. Girls might catch three colds, while boys catch two on average.

Generally speaking, the incidents of colds continue to decline while people are growing older. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds every year. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections. This is because people in this age group are most likely to have young babies. Adults who delay having children until their 30s and 40s experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income generally forces people to live in more limited space than those occupied by rich people, and crowding will increase the possibility of cold infections.

A.Work.

B.Food.

C.Social status.

D.Age.

第4题

Another critical factor that plays a part in susceptibility to colds is age. A study done
by the University of Michigan School of Public Health revealed particulars that seem to hold true for the general population. Infants are the most cold-ridden group, averaging more than six colds in their first year. Boys have more colds than girls up to age three. After the age of three, girls are more susceptible than boys, and teenage girls average three colds a year to boys' two.

The general incidence of colds continues to decline into maturity. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds annually. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections, because people in this age group are most likely to have young children. Adults who delay having children until their thirties and forties experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income generally forces people to live in more cramped quarters than those typically occupied by wealthier people, and crowding increases the opportunities for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also adversely influence diet. The degree to which poor nutrition affects susceptibility to colds is not yet clearly established, but an inadequate diet is suspected of lowering resistance generally.

The paragraph before this passage most probably deals with ______ .

A.minor diseases other than colds

B.the recommended treatment of colds

C.a factor that affects susceptibility to colds

D.methods of preventing colds among elderly people

Immigrants are consumers as well as producers, so they create jobs as well as taking them.
And the work they do need not be at the expense of native workers. Immigrants often hold jobs that natives are unwilling to accept at any feasible wage. Also, immigrants sometimes help to keep industries viable (能存活的) that would otherwise disappear altogether, causing employment to fall. This was the conclusion of a study of the Los Angeles garment industry in the 1970s and 1980s. And when immigrants working for low wages do put downward pressure on natives wages, they may raise the (real) wages of natives in general by keeping prices lower than they otherwise would be. In theory, then, the net effect of immigration on native wages is uncertain. Unfortunately, most of the empirical (经验主义的) research on whether immigrants make natives worse off in practice is also inconclusive except the effect, one way or the other, seems small. Most of this research has been done in America: if there were any marked influence on wages, that is where you would expect to find it, given the scale of immigration and the tendency of the newcomers to concentrate in certain areas. But most studies have compared wages and employment in areas with many immigrants to wages and employment in areas with few. For instance, one examined the impact of sudden and notorious inflow of refugees to Miami from the Cuban port of Mariel in 1980. Within the space of a few months, 125 000 people had arrived, increasing Miamis labor force by 7%. Yet the study concluded that wages and employment among the citys natives, including the unskilled, were virtually unaffected. Another study examined the effect of immigration on wages and employment of those at the bottom of the jobs ladder—unskilled blacks and Hispanics. It found that a doubling of the rate of immigration had no detectable effect on natives. The most recent work, admittedly, has tended to question these findings. Using more detailed statistics and more sophisticated methods than the earlier studies, this work has tended to find that immigrants wages take longer to rise to the level of the natives wages than has been supposed. This implies a more persistent downward pressure on the host economys labor market. Typically these studies find that immigration does depress unskilled natives wages to a small extent. But nearly all economists would agree that the effects of immigration are insignificant in relation to other influences.

According to the passage, immigration will not threaten natives benefits because______.

A.they only take jobs created by immigrants

B.they often hold jobs that natives don"t accept

C.they do not put downward pressure on natives" wages

D.they are unemployed most of the time

People in business can use foresight to identify new products and services, as well as mar
kets for those products and services. An increase in minority populations in a neighborhood would prompt a grocer with foresight to stock more foods linked to ethnic tastes. An art museum director with foresight might follow trends in computer graphics to make exhibits more appealing to younger visitors.

Foresight may reveal potential threats that we can prepare to deal with before they become crises. For instance, a corporate manager with foresight might see an alarming rise in local housing prices that could affect the availability of skilled workers in the region. The public's changing values and priorities, as well as emerging technologies, demographic shifts, economic constraints (or opportunities), and environmental and resource concerns are all parts of the increasingly complex world system in which leaders must lead.

People in government also need foresight to keep systems running smoothly, to plan budgets, and to prevent wars. Government leaders today must deal with a host of new problems emerging from rapid advances in technology.

Even at the community level, foresight is critical: School officials, for example, need foresight to assess numbers of students to accommodate, numbers of teachers to hire, new educational technologies to deploy, and new skills for students (and their teachers) to develop.

Many of the best-known techniques for foresight were developed by government planners, especially in the military, when the post-World War Ⅱ atomic age made it critical to "think about the unthinkable" and prepare for it. Pioneering futurists at the RAND Corporation (the first "think tank") began seriously considering what new technologies might emerge in the future and how these might affect U.S. security. These pioneering futurists at RAND, along with others elsewhere, refined a variety of new ways for thinking about the future.

The futurists recognized that the future world is continuous with the present world, so we can learn a great deal about what may happen in the future by looking systematically at what is happening now. The key thing to watch is not events (sudden developments or one-day occurrences) but trends (long-term ongoing shifts in such things as population. land use, technology, and governmental systems). Using these techniques and many others, futurists now can tell us many things that may happen in the future. Some are nearly certain to happen, such as the continuing expansion in the world's population. Other events are viewed as far less likely, but could be extremely important if they do occur, such as an asteroid colliding with the planet.

Correctly exercising foresight is shown in the case of ______.

A.new products and services

B.an increase in minority populations

C.stocking more foods with ethnic tastes

D.the appealing art museum director

根据下列材料请回答 23~30 题:

Ways to Reduce Exposure to Air Pollution

1 A report published recently brings bad news about air pollution. It suggests that it could be as damaging to our health as exposure to the radiation from the 1 986 Ukraine nuclear power plant disaster. The report was published by the UK’S Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. But what can city people do to reduce exposure to air pollution? Quite a lot,it turns out.

2 Avoid walking in busy streets.Choose side streets and parks instead.Pollution levels can fall a considerable amount just by moving a few meters away from the main pollution source—exhaust furies(废气).Also don’t walk behind smokers.Walk on the windward(顶风的)side of the street where exposure of pollutants(污染物)can be 50 percent less than on the downwind(顺风的)side.

3 Sifting on the driver'S side of a bus can increase your exposure by 10 percent, compared with sitting on the side realest the pavement.Sifting upstairs on a double—decked(双层电车)can reduce exposure. It is difficult to say whether traveling on an underground train is better or worse than taking the bus.Air pollution on underground trains tends to be less toxic(有毒的)than that at street level, because underground pollution is mostly made up of tiny iron particles(粒子)thrown up by wheels hitting the rails, while diesel(柴油机)and petrol fumes have a mixture of pollutants.

4 When you are crossing a road, stand well back from the curb(路缘)while you wait for the light to change。Every meter really does count when you are close to traffic. As the traffic begins to move, fumes can be reduced in just a few seconds。So holding your breath for just a moment can make a difference, even though it might sound silly.

5 There are large sudden pollution increases during rush hours.Pollution levels fall during nighttime. The time of year also makes a big difference.Pollution levels tend to be at their lowest during spring and autumn when winds are freshest.Extreme cold or hot weather has a trapping effect and tends to cause a build—up of pollutants.

第 23 题 Paragraph 2_________

A When you get up

B Where you stand while waiting to cross a road

C Where you walk

D Where you sit on a bus and how you travel

E When you go to bed

Computers in Cars

You ’re far from home 0n a lonely road.Shadowy forests stretch away 0n both sides.A thick mist (雾)makes it difficult to see far beyond your car’s windshield(挡风玻璃).

“Can this be route 90A? ” you wonder. If it is,you should be near a town. Yet there’s no hint of one. Night is closing in. and you’re low on gaso1ine.

This is a situation where an in-car computer that can navigate Would be a big help.

A car computer that navigates? Yes! Such computers exists. Several experimental models are being tested by General Motors,Ford,Chrysler, and several foreign car markets. These computers vary in details. But they a11 contain series 0f maps on Vediodiscs or videotapes. For example, one computer system contains 1 3,300 maps covering the Continental US.

Before starting out 0n a trip,a driver can type in the code for the region he 0r she plans to drive though. The computer then shows a map 0f that region. At the same time, a tiny radio receiver linked to the computer goes to work. It picks up signals from navigation satellites such as the NAVSTAR network. Using these signals, the computer shows a the car’s position at all times and displays this position on the map. The computer can also calculate and display the best route to follow.

A navigation computer may also receive and use data about road construction. weather conditions, and traffic jams. This information would be displayed to the driver and the computer would also use the information to work out alternate(交替的)routes.

Most ears nowadays also contain computers that help cars run more efficiently. Microprocessors (微处理机的)Control certain engine functions by regulating the mixing of fuel.Data on car speed, oil pressure, revolutions per minute, engine temperature, and fuel level can be displayed as digital data(numbers)or warming lights.

Some auto designers suggest that a central computer display can he used to clearly present such timely information as ear speed and fuel level. Warning 1ights would indicate a drop in oil pressure or a sudden rise in engine temperature. To get more information 0n these conditions, the driver would call it up on the computer display screen. When needed, the computer could he “asked” to provide navigation aid or information about the car’s Condition.

第 6 题 By describing a typical situation of a lost driver on the road, the author intend to

A.make us believe how complex the highway computer network is.

B.let us know how in-ca computers are linked to road signs

C.show us how helpful a navigation computer would be

D.tell us that NAVSTAR has collie into use.
