In 1637 the French mathematician Rene Descartes predicted that it would never be possible
to make a machine that thinks as humans do. In 1950, the British mathematician and computer pioneer Alan Turing declared that one day there would be a machine that could duplicate human intelligence in every way and prove it by passing a specialized test. In this test, a computer and a human hidden from view would be asked random identical questions. If the computer were successful, the questioner would be unable to distinguish the machine from the per son by the answers.

Inspired by Turing's theory, the first conference on AI convened at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in 1956. Soon afterwards and Al laboratory was started at Massachusetts Institute of Technology by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky, two of the nation's leading Al proponents. McCarthy also invented the Al computer language, Lisp; but by the early 1990s Al itself had not been achieved. However, logic programs called expert systems allow computers to "make decisions" by interpreting data and selecting from among alternatives. Technicians can run programs used in complex medical diagnosis, language translation, mineral exploration, and even computer design.

Machinery can outperform. humans physically. So, too, can computers outperform. mental functions in limited areas--notably in the speed of mathematical calculations. For example, the fastest computers developed are able to perform. roughly 10 billion calculations per second. But making more powerful computers will probably not be the way to create a machine capable of passing the Turing test. Computer programs operate according to set procedures, or logic steps, called algorithms. In addition, most computers do serial processing; operations of recognition and computation are performed one at a time. The brain works in a manner called parallel processing, performing operations simultaneously. To achieve simulated parallel processing, some supercomputers have been made with multiple processors to follow several algorithms at the same time.

Critics of the approach insist that solving a computation does not indicate understanding, something a person who solved a problem would have. Human reasoning is not based solely on rules of logic, It involves perception, awareness, emotional preferences, values, evaluation experience, the ability to generalize and weigh options, and more. Some proponents of Al have, therefore, suggested that computers should be patterned after the human brain, which essentially consists of a network of nerve cells.

By the early 1990s, the closest approximation to Al was a special silicon chip built to behave like a human brain cell. It was modeled after the internal working of neurons in the human cerebral context. Unlike the conventional sillicon chip, which works in digital mode, the new silicon chip works in analog mode, much the way human brain cell works.

According to Turing, a computer can prove to have human-like intelligence in a special test if______.

A.the computer gives better answers

B.the questioner fails to give identical questions

C.the questioner can't tell between the answers of a person and a computer

D.the questioner can't find the person hidden by the computer

"GRAY-COLLAR"

For the first time, Shanghai has officially put forward the concept of "gray-collar workers", which refers to technicians with a high-level of creativity and professional skills, in order to encourage more young people to take up these neglected positions.

Twenty-five occupations with 15,000 job positions—such as digital-controlled machine operator and fashion designer—are included in the first batch of "gray collars," mainly in the digital manufacturing industry, according to the Shanghai Labor and Social Security Bureau.

Unlike either white collars like management professionals or blue-collar operation workers, gray collar is a new class of workers with a high educational background and strong practicing ability, officials said.

It is a distinct group and not a transitory class between the white and blue, officials stressed.

"The concept was put forward in accordance with Shanghai's position as the world's center of digital manufacturing, as well as to help solve unemployment among locals, especially youth," said Zhu Junyi, the bureau director.

According to Zhu, some 40 percent of the unemployed in the city are young people who failed to find a steady job after their graduation, which is the second biggest jobless group after middle-aged laid-off workers.

Though an increasing number of local university graduates face great job pressure, many posts, especially those for skilled technicians, are still vacant.

"Most university graduates hope to become white collar workers after graduation, which means there is a big crowd for management positions. But demand for gray collar positions is much larger than the current supply," Zhu said.

In this regard, the Shanghai Career Training and Guidance Center will launch a series of profession al training courses for locals who will become gray collars.

"Gray-collar workers" refer to technicians with all of the following qualities EXCEPT:

A.high-level of creativity

B.high educational background

C.top management ability

U. S. Life Expectancy Hits New High

Life expectancy rates in the United States are at an all- time high, with people born in 2005 projected to live for nearly 78 years, a new federal study finds.

The finding reflects a continuing trend of increasing life expectancy that began in 1955, when the average American lived to be 69.6 years old. By 1995, life expectancy was 75.8 years, and by 2005, it had risen to 77.9 years, according to the report released Wednesday.

"This is good news," said report co - author Donna Hoyert, a health scientist at the National Center for Health Statistics. "It's even better news that it is a continuation of trends, so it is a long period of continuing improvement. "

Despite the upward trend, the United States still has a lower life expectancy than some 40 other countries, according to the U. S. Census (人口普查) Bureau. The country with the longest life expectancy is Andorra at 83.5 years, followed by Japan, Macau, San Marino and Singapore.

Much of the increase owes to declining death rates from the three leading causes of death in the country - heart disease, cancer and stroke.

In addition, in 2005, the U. S. death rate dropped to an all -time low of less than 800 deaths per 100,000.

Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, said, "News that life expectancy is increasing is, of course, good. But the evidence we have suggests that there is more chronic disease than ever in the U. S."

Adding years to life is a good thing, Katz said. "But adding vital life to years is at least equally important. If we care about living well, and not just longer, we still have our work cut out for us," he said.

Since 1955, life expectancy rates in the U. S. have

A.moved up and down.

B.been declining.

C.remained steady.

D.been on the rise.
