An old and very rich friend of mine told me he had an unpleasant experience. He went to a

famous jewelry shop and asked to be shown some gold necklaces. After examining several, he decided to buy a gold necklace with a precious stone, and asked if he could pay by check. The assistant said that was quite in order, but the moment my friend signed his name, he was invited into the manager's office. The manager was very polite, but he explained that someone with exactly the same name had given them a worthless check not long ago. My friend got very angry when he heard this and said that he would buy a necklace somewhere else. When he got up to go, the manager told him that the police would arrive at any moment and he had better stay unless he wanted to get into serious trouble. Sure enough, the police arrived soon afterwards. They were polite, too, but explained that a person who had used the same name as his was responsible for a number of recent robberies. Then the police asked my friend to copy out a note which had been used by the thief in a number of stores. The note read, "I have a gun in my pocket. Ask no question and give me all the money in the drawer."

Fortunately, my friend's handwriting was quite unlike the thief's. He was not only allowed to go without further delay, but to take the necklace with him.

When the man asked if he could pay by check, the assistant ______.

A.refused to take any

B.invited him into the manager's office

C.said that was all right

D.said nothing was wrong with a check

The Now Rich and the Old Rich

Though it is mere 1 to 3 percent of the population, the upper class possesses at least 25 percent of the nation’s wealth. This class has two segments: upper-upper and lower-upper. Basically, the upper-upper class is the “old rich”—families that have been wealthy for several generations and aristocracy of birth and wealth. Their names are in the Social Register, a listing of acceptable members of high society. A few are known across the nation, such as the Rockfellers, Roosevelts, and Vanderbilts. Most are not visible to the general public. They live in grand seclusion (深居简出), drawing their income from the investment of their inherited wealth. In contrast, the lower upper class is the “new rich”. Although they may he wealthier than some of the old rich, the new rich have hustled(急于做)to make their money like everybody else beneath their class. Thus their prestige is generally lower than that of the old rich, who have not found it necessary to lift a finger to make their money, and who tend to look down upon the new rich.

However its wealth is acquired, the upper class is very, very rich. They have enough money and leisure time to cultivate an interest in the arts and to collect rare books, painting, and sculpture. They generally live in exclusive areas, belong to exclusive social clubs, communicate with each other, and marry their own kind — all of which keeps them so distant from the masses that they have been called the out-of-sight class. They also command an enormous amount of power and influence here and abroad, as they hold many top government positions, run the Council on foreign relations, and control multinational corporations. Their actions affect the lives of millions.

All the following statements are true except that______.

A.the upper-upper class is of aristocratic origin

B.the “old rich” enjoy higher prestige than the “new rich”

C.the “old rich” isolate themselves and lead a lonely life

D.the upper class owns at least a quarter of the country’s wealth

Confidence is the personal possession of no one; the person who has it learns it and goes
on learning. The most gifted individual on earth has to construct confidence in his gifts from the basis of faith and experience, like anybody else. The tools will differ from one person to the next, but the essential task is the same. Confidence and pose are available to us all according to our abilities and needs—not somebody elses—provided we utilize our gifts and expand them. One of the most rewarding aspects of confidence is that it sits gracefully on every age and level of life on children, men, women, the famous, the obscure, rich, poor, artist, executive, teenagers, the very old. And you can take it with you into old age. There is nothing more inspiring than an old person who maintains his good will, humor, and faith in himself, in others, in the future. Conversely, the root cause of old peoples despair is a feeling of not being wanted, of nothing to contribute, no more to conquer and become.

We get energy from the foods we eat. Our food supplies energy to keep our organs worki
ng. Our food also supplies heat to warm our bodies.

The main energy foods are the carbohydrates (碳水化合物). These are sugars and starch (淀粉). Wheat and rice are rich in starch and many fruits and vegetables contain considerable amount of sugar. Sweets, honey and jam are also rich in sugar.

Like carbohydrates, fats are food that provides us with energy. Butter, margarine, certain types of fish, eggs, cooking oils and most red meats are rich in fats. Fats can be stored in various parts of the body as reserves of energy. Because fats in general are slowly digested, they satisfy hunger for long periods.

Proteins (蛋白质) are very complex substances. The body needs proteins for the growth of new cells and for the repair and replacement of old cells. Foods rich in proteins are essential to a balanced diet. Milk, some vegetables, meat, chicken, fish, cheese, grains and nuts are some foods rich in proteins.

A good diet will contain a variety of foods so that the body contains all the minerals it needs for good health.

Vitamins are necessary for the proper working of the body. If we eat a variety of foods, we can be sure of obtaining all the vitamins we need.

Water makes up about 70 per cent of the weight of the human body. The average adult needs about two liters of water daily to replace the water the body loses.

If equal weight of the following substances is “burned” in the body, the largest amount of energy is produced by().

A、carbohydrates

B、fats

W:Eighteen, sir,I came, when I was twenty,to wait on the mistress till she died at forty-eight,the master retained me for his housekeeper.

M:Indeed.

W:Ah,times are greatly Changed Since then!

M:Yes,you’ve seen a good many alterations,I suppose?

W:I have,and troubles too.

M:Why the landlord let Thrushcross Grange, and preferred living in a situation and residence so much inferior. Is he not rich enough to keep the estate in good order?

W: Rich, sir! He has, nobody knows what money, and every year it increases.Yes,yes,he’s rich enough to

live in a finer house than this: but he's very near -- close-handed; and, if he had meant to flit to Thrushcross Grange, as soon as he heard of a good tenant he could not have borne to miss the chance of getting a few hundreds more. It is strange people should be so greedy, when they are alone in the world!

M: He had a son, it seems?

W: Yes, he had one -- he is dead.

M: And, that young lady is his widow?

W: Yes.

M: Where did she come from originally?

W: Why, sir, she is my late master's daughter: Catherine Clinton was her maiden name. I nursed her, poor thing! I did wish her family would remove here, and then we might have been together again.

How old is the housekeeper now?

A.Eighteen.

B.Twenty-eight.

C.Thirty-eight.

D.Forty-eight.
