听力原文: Many of us believe that a person's mind becomes less active as he grows older. But this is not true, according to Dr. Lissy F. Javik, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Jarvik has studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concerns 136 pairs of identical twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old. As Dr. Jarvik's continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 8Os, their minds did not generally decline as was expected.

However, there was some decline in their psychomotor speed. This means that it took them longer to accomplish mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor, they last very little intellectual ability over the years. In general, Dr. Jarvik's studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only into the 30s and 40s but also into 60s and 70s as well.

As for learning new things, and ability to remember, studies by Dr. Jarvik and others show that the old are equal to the young. It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call "loss of memory" is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble hearing or poor vision, or inattention, or was trying to learn the new thing at a speed that was too fast.

In the cases where the older person's mind really seems to decay, it is not necessarily a sign of a decay due to old age or "senility". Often it is simply a sign of a depressed emotional state. The depression usually can be counteracted by counseling, therapy with a psychologist, or medications which fight depression.

(30)

A.It remains as active as ever.

B.It tends to be less active.

C.It loses the ability to reason.

D.It functions well in learning new things.

听力原文:W: Dr. Carter's Office.

M: Yes, I'd like to make an appointment to see Dr. Carter, please.

W: Okay. Could I have your name please?

M: Yes. My name is Ronald Schuller.

W: Okay. How about the day after tomorrow on Wednesday at 4:00 o'clock?

M: Uh. Do you happen to have an opening in the morning? I usually pick up my kids from school around that time.

W: Okay. Um... how about Tuesday at 8:00 A.M. or Thursday at 8:15 A. M. ?

M: Well, Thursday would be fine.

W: Okay. Could I have your phone number please?

M: It's 6434)547.

W: Alright. And what's the nature of your visit?

M: Uh...

W: Yes sir.

M: Well, to tell the truth, I fell from a ladder two days ago while painting my house, and I sprained my ankle when my foot landed in a paint can. I suffered a few scratches on my hands and knees, but I'm most concerned that the swelling in my ankle hasn't gone down yet.

W: Well, did you put ice on it immediately after this happened?

M: Well yeah. I just filled the paint can with ice and...

W: And so after you removed the paint can... Sir, sir, Mr. Schuller, are you still there?

M: Well that's part of the problem. Uh, the paint can is still on my foot.

W: Look, Mr. Schuller. Please come in today. I don't think your case can wait.

听力原文: Alexander Fleming was bom on August 6th, 1881 on Darvel, Scotland. He was one of the eight children in the family. As a boy he showed a strong interest in nature.

Just before his 14th birthday he went to London to live with an older brother, Dr. Thomas Fleming. At 16 he went to work as a clerk for a shipping company.

When Fleming was twenty, an uncle died and left him a small sum of money. Determined to use the money wisely, he asked his brother's advice. Dr. Flemning suggested that he take an examination for medical college. He took the exam, and he got the highest score. He then began to study at St. Mary's Hospital in London.

When he completed his medical training, Fleming did not join his brother's practice as he had earlier intended. He decided to spend the rest of his life as a biologist.

It was in the fall of 1928 that Fleming discovered penicillin, the chemical produced by a mold called Penicillum. But it was two years before anyone attempted to produce pure penicillin in quantity. This was achieved by two other scientists, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, during World War Ⅱ , in time to save the lives of thousands of wounded soldiers.

In 1945, he, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize for medicine.

Alexander Fleming died at the age of 71, on March 11th, 1955.

听力原文: How many teeth have you had filled in the past two years? If you follow the advice of Dr. Faustick 'you may be able to reduce the number of your visits to a dentist. Dr. Faustick conducted a twoyear survey to find out how to prevent or reduce dental decay. 946 students took part in an experiment. 523 students cleaned their teeth within ten minutes of eating when possible they used a tooth brush, when this was impossible they washed their mouth thoroughly with water. The remaining 423 students merely cleaned their teeth when they went to bed and when they got up in the morning. All the students had their teeth X rayed at the end of the first and second years. At the end of the first year, the night and morning group had three times as many decayed teeth as the dean after each meal group. At the end of the second year the latter group had 53 percent fewer decayed teeth than the former group. Dr. Fausstick has cleaned his teeth after meal for thirteen years and has not had a single decayed tooth. He pointed out that sugar is a major agent in dental decay. Particularly the sugar in sweets, cakes, and soft drinks. Ideally you should keep a tooth brush in your pocket and use it immediately after you have finished eating. When this is impractical you can at least make sure that you have a drink of water and let the water through your teeth to force out any particles of food. 7 of out 10 people loose at least half of their teeth by the time they are fifty. Many have a complete set of false teeth by that time. In any case neither toothache nor a visit to a dentist is very pleas ant. So it is worthwhile making an effort to keep you own teeth as long as possible. The main preventative agent is simply water.
