Today I have read the Tempest ... Among the many reasons which make me glad to have been b

orn in England, and one of the first is that I read Shakespeare in my mother tongue. If I try to imagine myself as one who cannot know him face to face, who hears him only speaking from afar, and that in accents which only through the labouring intelligence can touch the living soul, there comes upon me a sense of chill discouragement, of dreary deprivation. I am wont to think that I can read Homer, and, assuredly, if any man enjoys him, it is I; but can I for a moment dream that Homer yields me all his music, that his word is to me as to him who walked by the Hellenic shore when Hellas lived? I know that there reaches me across the vast of time no more than a faint and broken echo; I know that it would be fainter still, but for its blending with those memories of youth which are as a glimmer of the worlds primeval glory.

听力原文: Good morning, students. I hope you have read the two books about speech. Today's lecture deals with the presence of the unusually large deaf population that existed on the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard for about three centuries. From the settlement of the islands in the 1640s to the 20th century, people there, who were descended from only 25 or 30 original families, married mainly other residents of the island. They formed a highly inbred group, setting an example of the genetic patterns for the inheritance of deafness. Indeed in the late 18th century one out of every 25 people in one village on the island was born deaf, and the island as a whole had a deafness rate at least 17 times greater than that of the rest of the United States. Even Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone and a prominent investigator into hearing loss, visited Martha's Vineyard to study the population. But because the principles of genetics and inheritance were still unknown, he was not able to explain the patterns of deafness and why a deaf parent did not always have deaf children. In the 20th century, the local population began to marry people off the island and the rate of deafness started to fall.

(33)

A.At the library.

B.In a lecture hall.

C.On Martha's Vineyard.

D.At a telephone laboratory.

I am out sick today, so there are several errands I'll need you to do for me. I have outlined them below. Please call me at home if this message is not clear.

There are several things to deliver to other floors in the library. All of these items are on my desk, and they must be delivered today. Take the DVDs to Marjorie. At the same time, you can take the black umbrella to the Lost and Found since it's on the same floor. Also, there are some books in Arabic. They go to Level 2. Deliver the biography on Anwar Sadat to Level 3.

I was scheduled to give two presentations today. The first one is a workshop in Room C. Please put a sign on the door saying, "Today's workshop is canceled." I am also scheduled to read a book to the children. Please go to Children's Services and let Adishree know that I can't do it.

Because you are a new employee, I have attached a copy of the library directory to help you find your way around. Thank you again. I hope to recover quickly and see you at work tomorrow.

Part B

Directions :

Read the opinions given, by five scholars on challenges facing today's single women,. For questions 61 to 65, match the name of each scholar to one of the statements(A to G)given below. Mark your answers on, ANS WER SHEET 1.

Timothy Constance:

What the women I spoke with said was that they want a husband who is independent and dedi-cated to

his career, but that he doesn't have to make a lot of money. The emphasis was always on finding a best

friend-a soul mate-someone you could tell all your troubles to and who would be supportive. So it

doesn' t seem to be the case that these women were looking for super high -achieving men.

Grise Levison:

I think that for women, as well as for men, the standard for someone who you'd want to spend your life

with depends much more today on emotional intimacy. It takes some trial and error and a pretty long

and dedicated search to identify the kind of person who is emotionally matchingyou and who is able to

communicate and listen to trouble talk.

Marry Brown:

In recent decades girls have been raised to be more competitive and stronger than they were in the

past. Several women I talked to mentioned that in their life they felt that their intelligence or intellectual

achievement seemed to work against them in their romantic relationships with men. How ever, most of

the women I interviewed felt that there were some men "out there" who would be attracted to smart

women. The problem was finding them.

Donna Smith:

I think, for the women I talked to, their ultimate sense of what they want in life includes family and

children, but they aren't willing to think about the fact that they therefore will probably have to give up

some of their own individual pursuits and career goals. I think the definition of suc-cess includes both

love and work, and that the challenge is how to arrange that in a particular or-der.

Elizabeth Budy:

I think that people who have done at least some of the things that are essential for a wise judg-ment

about a partner are more likely to eventually end up in a stable marriage. It' s also true that they're likely

to marry someone who is similar to them in education and earning power, which means that those

marriages are likely to have more money in them.

Now match the name of each scholar (6/ t0 65) to the appropriate statement.

Note: there are two extra statements.

[ A] Career success is in fact not a disadvantage.

[ B] The ability to choose a right partner ensures a stable marriage.

[ C] How to balance career with family is key to success.

[D] The essential part of marriage is the union of soul.

[E] Finding an emotionally intimate mate isn' t a piece of cake.

[ F] Career success ensures a solid marriage.

[ G] Social assistance is needed for today' s single women.

Introducing T-shaped management

Despite their best efforts, most companies continue to squander what may be their greatest asset in today's knowledge economy. I am referring to the wealth of expertise, ideas and latent insights that lie scattered across or deeply embedded in their organisations. This seems a great shame, because capitalising on those intellectual resources - using existing knowledge to improve performance or combining strands of knowledge to create something altogether new - can help companies respond to a surprising array of challenges, from fending off smaller, nimbler rivals to integrating businesses that have been forced together in a merger.

(9) I suggest another approach, one that requires managers to change their behaviour and the way they spend their time. The approach is novel but, when properly implemented, quite powerful. I call it T-shaped management.

T-shaped management relies on a new kind of executive, one who breaks out of the traditional corporate hierarchy to share knowledge freely across the organisation (the horizontal part of the T) while remaining fiercely committed to individual business unit performance (the vertical part). (10) Although this tension is most acute for heads of business units, any T- shaped manager with operating unit obligations must wrestle with it.

You might ask, why rely so heavily on managers to share knowledge? Why not just institute a state-of-the-art knowledge management system? The trouble is that those systems are best at transferring explicit knowledge; for example, the template needed to perform. a complicated but routine task. (11) In fact, this implicit knowledge sharing is crucial to the success of innovation-driven companies. Furthermore, merely moving documents around can never engender the degree of collaboration that is needed to generate new insights. (12)

Effective T-shaped managers will benefit companies of almost any size, but they're particularly crucial in large corporations where operating units have been granted considerable autonomy. Although giving business units greater freedom generally increases accountability and spurs innovation, it can also lead to competition between units, which may hoard, rather than share, expertise. (13)

So, how do you successfully cultivate T-shaped managers and capitalise on the value they can create? Energy giant BP Amoco provides some provocative answers. My in-depth examination of their management practices highlighted five specific types of value that T-shaped managers can generate. (14) It is important to follow these, because the benefits of T-shaped management will not be realised if the concept is poorly implemented. Senior executives must put in place mechanisms that simultaneously promote and discipline managers' knowledge-sharing activities.

A However, direct personal contact is more typically needed to effectively transfer the kind of knowledge that must be creatively applied to particular business problems or opportunities.

B For that, companies really have to bring people together to brainstorm.

C Many companies have tried, with mixed success, to leverage this underused asset by centralising knowledge management functions or by investing heavily in knowledge management technology.

D The entire history of the T-shaped manager is one of evolution, a process that continues to this day.

E The successful T-shaped manager must learn to live with, and ultimately thriv

The worst thing about television and radio is that they entertain us, saving us the troubl
e of entertaining ourselves.

A hundred years ago, before all these devices were invented, if a person wanted to entertain himself with a song or a piece of music, he would have to do the singing himself or pick up a violin and play it. Now, all he has to do is turn on the radio or TV. As a result, singing and music have declined.

Italians used to sing all the time. Now, they only do it in Hollywood movies, Indian movies are mostly a series of songs and dances trapped around silly stories. As a result, they don't do much singing in Indian villages anymore. Indeed, ever since radio first came to life, there has been a terrible decline in amateur (业余的) singing throughout the world.

There are two reasons for this sad decline. One, human beings are astonishingly lazy. Put a lift in a building, and people would rather take it than climb even two flights of steps. Similarly, invent a machine that sings, and people would rather let the machine sing than sing themselves. The other reason is that people are easily embarrassed. When there is a famous, talented musician readily available by pushing a button, which amateur violinist or pianist would want to try to entertain family or friends by himself?

These earnest reflections came to me recently when two CDs arrived in the mail. They are historic recordings of famous writers reading their own works. It was thrilling to hear the voices from a long dead past in the late 19th century. But today, reading out loud anything is no longer common. Today, we sing songs to our children until they are about two, we read simple books to them till they are about five, and once they have learnt to read themselves, we become deaf. We're alive only to the sound of the TV and the stereo (立体声音响).

I count myself extremely lucky to have been born before TV became so common: I was about six before TV appeared. To keep us entertained my mother had to do a good deal of singing and tell us endless tales. It was the same in many other homes. People spoke a language; they sang it, they recited it; it was something they could feel.

Professional actors' performance is extraordinarily revealing. But I still prefer my own reading, because it's mine. For the same reason, people find karaoke (卡拉OK) liberating. It is almost the only electronic thing that gives them back their own voice. Even if their voices are hopelessly out of tune, at least it is meaningful self-entertainment.

The main idea of this passage is that ______.

A.TV and radio can amuse us with beautiful songs and music

B.TV and radio prevent us from self-entertainment

C.people should sing songs and read books aloud themselves

D.parents should sing songs and read books aloud to their children

听力原文: Today I want to help you with a study reading method known as SQ3R. The letters stand for five steps in the reading process: Survey, Question, Read, Review, Recite. Each of the steps should be done carefully and in the order mentioned.

In all study reading, a survey should be the first step. Survey means to look quickly, Don't stop to read complete sentences. Just look at the important divisions of the material.

The second step is question. Try to form. questions based on your survey. Use the question words who, what, when, where, why, and how.

Now you are ready for the third step--read. You will be rereading the titles and important words that you look at in the survey. But this time you will read the examples and details as well. Sometimes it is useful to take notes while you read. I have had students who preferred to underline important points, and it seems to be just as useful as note- taking. What you should do, whether you take notes or underline, is to read actively. Think about what you are reading as a series of ideas, not just a sequence of words.

The fourth step is review. Remember the questions that you wrote down before you read the material. You should be able to answer them now. You will notice that some of the questions were treated in more detail in the reading. Concentrate on those. Also review material that you did not consider in your questions.

The last step is recite. Try to put the reading into your own words. Summarize it either in writing or orally.

(31)

A.A new way to take notes.

B.A short name for survey reading method.

C.The five steps in the reading process.

D.Different ways to study for examinations.
