听力原文:Last week we discussed the problem of rising prices, or, in the economist's terms

听力原文: Last week we discussed the problem of rising prices, or, in the economist's terms, inflation. We noted that, during periods of inflation, all prices and incomes do not rise at the same rate. Some incomes rise more slowly than the cost of living, and a few do not rise at all. Other incomes rise more rapidly than the cost of living.

We concluded that persons with fixed incomes as, for example, the elderly who depend upon pensions, and persons with slow-rising incomes as, for example, an employee with a salary agreed to in a long-term contract, will be most seriously affected by inflation. Please recall that while their dollar incomes stay the same, the cost of goods and services rises, and in effect, real income decreases; that is, they are able to purchase less with the same amount of money. We also talked about the fact that stockholders and persons with business interests and investments would probably benefit most from inflation, since high prices would increase sales receipts, and profits would likely rise faster than the cost of living.

And now, before we begin today's lecture, are there any questions about the term "inflation"?

(30)

A.To introduce the concept of inflation.

B.To discuss the causes of inflation.

C.To review last week's lesson on inflation.

D.To argue in favor of inflation.

听力原文: From the earliest times, man has clothed himself in fabrics of one sort or another. At first, he depended upon animal skins and furs. Then he learned to make crude materials by interweaving flexible strands, such as vines and creepers, into primitive forms of cloth. This was the beginning of textile manufacture, which has now grown into one of world's great industries.

The production of textile fabrics by an interweaving process was possible only if suitable strands were available. The stems of plants, and strips of animal skin, possessed the strength and flexibility that enabled them to be woven into coarse materials.

As man became more civilized, he demanded finer fabrics for clothing and other purpose. In China, for example, wonderfully fine continuous filaments, or thin threads, were obtained by unwinding the cocoons of silk-worms. Flexible strands were made by combining several of these filaments together, and the strands of silk were woven into fabrics of the finest quality. Then China became famous for her silks, which were carried by traders to various parts of the world.

(26)

A.Fabrics.

B.Natural fibbers.

C.Primitive forms of cloth.

D.Animal skins and furs.

听力原文:High in dense bamboo forests in the misty, rainy mountains of southwestern China

听力原文: High in dense bamboo forests in the misty, rainy mountains of southwestern China lives one of the world's rarest mammals: the giant panda, also called the panda. Only about 1,000 of these black-and-white relatives of bears survive in the wild.

Pandas eat almost nothing but bamboo shoots and leaves. Occasionally they eat other vegetation, fish, or small animals, but bamboo accounts for 99 percent of their diets. Pandas' teeth are very broad and flat. The shape of these teeth helps the animals crush the bamboo shoots, leaves, and stems they eat. There are many species of bamboo. Only a few of these grow at the high altitudes where pandas live today. A panda should have at least two bamboo species where it lives, or it will starve.

Giant pandas used to be able to move quite easily from one mountain top to another in search of food. Now the valleys are mostly inhabited by people. Pandas are shy; they don't venture into areas where people live. This restricts pandas to very limited areas.

Conservation organizations and Chinese government officials and scientists continue to work toward resolving the pandas' isolation problems. Maintaining "Bamboo Corridors" -- strips of undisturbed land through which pandas can comfortably travel from mountain to mountain-- is one of the many ideas that may help save the giant panda.

B.500.

C.1,000.
