第2题

There are two methods of fighting, the one by law, the other by force; the first method is
that of men, the second of beasts; but as the first method is often insufficient, one must have recourse to the second. It is, therefore, necessary for a prince to know how to use both the beast and the man. This was covertly taught to the rulers by ancient writers, who relate how Achilles and many others of those ancient princes were given Chiron the centaur (半人半马怪物) to be brought up and educated under his discipline. The parable(寓言) of this semi-animal, semi-human teacher is meant to indicate that a prince must know how to use both natures, and that without the other it is not durable.

A prince, being thus obliged to know well how to act as a beast, must imitate the fox, and the lion, for the lion cannot protect himself from traps. And the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. Those that wish to be only lions do not understand this. Therefore, a prudent(小心谨慎的) ruler ought not to keep faith when by doing so it would be against his interest, and the .reasons which made him bind himself no longer exist. If men were all good, this precept (戒律,准则) would not be a good one; but as they are had, and would not observe their faith with you, so you are not bound to keep faith with them. Nor have legitimate grounds ever failed a prince who wishes to show colorable excuse for the nonfulfilment of his promise. Of this one could furnish an infinite number of examples, and how many times peace has been broken, and how many promises rendered worthless, by the faithlessness of princes, and those that have best been able to imitate the fox have succeeded best. But it is necessary to be able to disguise this character well, and to be a great feigner and dissembler, and men are so simple and so ready to obey present necessities, that the one who deceives will always find those who allow themselves to be deceived.

Passage Two

How men first learned to invent words is unknown. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their associations--the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the happy and sad events of our past; the more we read and learn, the larger the number of words that mean something to us becomes.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and feelings. This attractive use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music, and, by their position and association, can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or they will make our speech dull and silly.

Which of the following did men invent first?

A.Words.

B.Sounds.

C.Signs.

D.Letters.

听力原文: When men first lived on the earth a long time ago, they had no proper place to live in. In order to get away from the heat of the sun, to keep themselves warm and dry, they found caves. Caves really gave them some kind of help. Some of these early men built their shelters up in the tree to escape wild animals. They had a hard life and had to go about from place to place for food. Much later on, their lives began to change. They learnt how to keep animals in herds. As they had to move their herds of animals from place to place for grassland, they had to build shelters which were easily carried about.

When they finally learnt the art of farming, they had to clean forests and started planting crops. After that, they had to think about building more permanent shelters. Old houses were built at first with wood and they even use grass as roofs. This went on for a long time. They kept making their houses better. Today, houses of all kinds are built. They are strong, permanent and can last a very long time.

(30)

A.To get away from the heat of the sun.

B.To keep themselves warm.

C.To get away from the rain.

D.To keep themselves dry.

听力原文: When someone says, "Well, I guess I'll have to go and face the music", it does not mean he is planning to go to a concert. [32] It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that. Sour music, indeed, but it has to be faced. The phrase "to face the music" is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from? [33] The first information came from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper. He said--in 1851--that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their cue to go on, they often said, "It's time to go to face the music". And that is exactly what they did--face the orchestra which was just below the stage.

[34] An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. So, "to face the music" came to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you had no choice. The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection by their leader. [35]The soldiers worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean and shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

(7)

A.Your boss's order.

B.Your leader's inspection.

C.Something unpleasant to be experienced.

D.Sour pop music.
