第1题

Human wants seem endless. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an ove
rcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure boats dance into view.

The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears.

The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears—clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War Ⅱthese wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans, Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the "life-enriching" level. While the other levels inv61ve physical satisfaction the feeling, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called "luxury" items. Among them are vacation trips, the best .medical and dental care, and entertainment. Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.

On the fourth level, a greater percentage of consumers spending goes to service, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increase, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when______.

A.he has saved up enough money

B.he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelter

C.he has satisfied, his hunger

D.he has learned to build houses

Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does h
e want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand what he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and repose; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a broken leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something ... all of which mean that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

What all artists in common is that ______.

A.they use shapes and colors instead of words

B.they want the public to understand them and get something from their works

C.they want to show the public something that is difficult to explain

D.they want to learn from the public

It is curious how often sympathy for the old and infirm takes a form. which actually humil
iates them. Their friends, with good will, sometimes lean forward to rearrange their neckwear, touching their hair or patting their faces—things they would never presume to do, unasked, to one of their contemporaries. An equally humiliating habit is to talk about old people in front of them as if they were not there, discussing their health.

It is now universally accepted that children should be encouraged to do as much as they can for themselves in order to develop their brains and muscles, but so few people today seem to have time to allow the elderly the same means of keeping their minds and muscles active. They perform. innumerable services for the old that they would be much better left to do, even with a struggle, for themselves.

Convenient flats, "motherly" visitors, or organized entertainments cannot make up for the fundamental need which must be satisfied the need to retain to the end of life human dignity and the respect of one's fellows.

Many people are not aware that it is rather rude to ______.

A.talk casually about old people in front of them as if they were not there

B.show sympathy for the old

C.take care of the old when they are not ill

D.pat the faces of the contemporaries

听力原文: Biologically, there is only one quality which distinguishes us from animals: the ability to laugh. And it is a luxury-, for unlike any other bodily process, laughter does not seem to serve a biologically useful purpose. In a divided world, laughter is a unifying force. Human beings oppose each other on a great many issues, but we all share the ability to laugh. And laughter, in turn, depends on that most complex and subtle of all human qualities : a sense of humor. This can best be seen from the world-wide popularity of Charlie Chaplin's early films. The little man at odds with society never fails to amuse no matter which country we come from. Dr. Samuel Johnson, a great commentator on human affairs, once remarked, " Men have been wise in very different modes; but they have always laughed in the same way.

A sense of humor and laughter may take various forms, but the effect is always the same. The sense of humor must be singled out as man's most important quality because it is associated with laughter. And laughter, in turn, is associated with happiness. Courage, determination, initiative--these are qualities we share with other forms of life. But the sense of humor is uniquely human. If happiness is one of the great goals of life, then it is the sense of humor that provides the key.

29. How does the speaker evaluate laughter in a divided world?

30.What does the world-wide popularity of Charlie Chaplin's early films illustrate?

31.What opinion is stressed in the end of the passage?

(30)

A.It distinguishes happy men from others.

B.It is a luxury enjoyed by few.

C.It is a unifying power.

D.It serves as a daily necessity.

An aunt of mine has often said, "Youth is wasted on the young. "This statement has aroused
my interest for years. People usually smile when she says it, and I have always smiled, too. But I think I' m just now beginning to understand the meaning of the saying. Quite recently I thought how close in meaning it is to a statement Thornton Wolder made in his play Our Town. Toward the end of the play, Emily, one of the main characters in the play, says, "I didn't realize. So all that was going on and we never noticed!... Do any human beings ever realize while they live it -- every ,every minute?" Older people, looking back, can appreciate youth, its real meaning and importance, but young people, while they are in the middle of their youth, never fully realize what they have. An older person recognizes his increasing age by making comparisons to his youth. "I'm not as young as I was. Better slow down. "he says to himself. The importance of youth, the energy and excitement of it, is realized only after it is gone. Thus, it seems to me my aunt is right. Youth is wasted on the young. Babies should be old and gray-haired when they' re born. Only after many years should they be permitted to enjoy their youth.

By saying "The youth is wasted on the youth" , the writer means that ______.

A.most older people regret not being young now

B.people didn't do anything important when they were young

C.when the importance of youth is realized, everything is gone

D.young people seem to know little about the value of the youth
