听力原文: There is increasing scientific evidence that large cars cause more highway accidents than small cars. In the news recently was the story of a woman who died of a heart attack while driving her station wagon. The car was moving so fast that it went through the highway-dividing fence, resulting in a collision in which five people died. Those unnecessary deaths are attributable in part to the woman's choice of a large automobile. A lighter and smaller car probably wouldn't have gone through the fence, because the heavier the ear, the greater the force it will have in a collision. Furthermore, even if the lighter car had broken through the fence, its remaining energy would have been much less, and this would have reduced the chances of serious injury or death. Because of its small size, it might have missed the other car completely. The present design of the oversized automobile is largely responsible ant only for the increasing death toll on the highway but also for the rapid depletion of our resources of petroleum, for the pollution of our environment, for urban sprawl, and for the congestion and inconvenience of our cities.

A.The story of a woman who died of a heart attack.

B.The story of a car going through the highway-dividing fence.

C.The story of a collision in which five people died.

听力原文: Butterflies are common all over the world but the ones in hot countries are usua
lly bigger and more brightly colored than those in cooler countries, and there are more different kinds. Usually the male butterfly is more brightly colored than the female. The females have bigger and heavier bodies, since they carry the eggs. The gay colors of the male help to attract the female and the duller colors of the female make them less likely to be caught by enemies before they have laid their eggs.

Some butterflies have a bright pattern of colors on the upper surface of their wings which show when they fly, but when they rest on a tree or leaf they close their wings. On the undersides of their wings there are green and brown markings which look like the tree or leaves. They are then difficult to see. The best example of this is the Dead Leaf Butterfly. When its wings are closed, it looks like the holes in a dead leaf. When a bird is chasing a butterfly, and it closes its wings, it seems to have disappeared completely.

Many butterflies have round marks on their wings that look like eyes. When they are resting, and their wings are folded, these cannot be seen. when a bird sees one, and begins to attack it, the butterfly opens its wings. The bird thinks that it sees two eyes staring at it, and frightened, it flies away.

Which of the following is likely to be the most brightly colored?

A.A male butterfly in a hot country.

B.A female butterfly in a hot country.

C.A dead leaf butterfly with its wings closed.

D.A large, heavy butterfly.

Kite

Kite flying is the sport of sending up into the air, by means of the wind, a light frame. covered with paper, plastic or doth. The frame. can be one of many different shapes and is attached to a long string held in the hand or wound on a drum. Kites have a long history practical application and many different types of kite have been developed to serve various purposes.

The ancient Chinese used bird-kites to carry ropes across rivers and valleys. The current folding kite which will dive excitingly is an improved type of such a kite. With its long flat body and single pair of bird like wings, it looks just like a large bird in the air. The modern version is usually made of tissue paper rather than the traditional silk.

Man-lifting kites were developed in ancient times, again by the Chinese, for getting information from walled cities and army camps. In fact, as recently as World War Ⅱ, German U-boats flew kites from their towers to lift people into the air to watch the land. These kites, which are no longer in existence, were made of lightweight cloth. They were much larger and stronger than the Chinese ones. Their design, however, was simply that of the cutter kite. Smaller in size, this type of kite is still very popular as a toy for children, being easy to make with a diamond-shaped frame, no wings and brown-paper covering.

Box kites are another type of kite found in toy shops today. The first box kite, named for its box-like body, was developed in the 19th century to test theories of flight and this type of cotton-covered kite greatly assisted the success of early airplanes. These kites are the ancestors of a heavier version of the box kite, called the double box kite, which consists of two main sections, placed side by side. Developed for the peacetime purpose of fishing in strong sea wind, it is the only modern kite described which has practical value. A long-lasting plastic material has to be used for this kite, which carries fishing lines.

The ancient Chinese bird-kites were usually made of light frames covered with ______.

A.silk

B.paper

C.cloth

D.plastic
