"Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way..." goes the popular Christmas tune. With
the song in my head, I felt a bit sorry for myself. Instead of rushing back and forth across a freezing school campus, I could have had a cozy Christmas dinner at home or enjoyed the fabulous fireworks lighting up campus at night. But this Christmas would not be celebrated as usual.

One month ago, all six girls in my dormitory (including me) had made detailed plans for a more-exciting-than-ever Christmas holiday. But one day we received an unusual mission: we were asked to organize a party that would be a fund-raiser for mentally disabled children from the hospital. The children would perform. on stage while volunteers offered food to the spectators (观众) and collect some money for the organization.

Naturally, we were supposed to support the idea wholeheartedly, and we did. But wait—the date of the show was set right on Christmas Eve! This meant that all our original Christmas plans would have to best aside.

However, we took the plunge into preparations for the party. We spared no effort in organizing, designing, propagandizing, and so on. We went through thick and thin and finally made it, though with a bit of reluctance.

Finally, Christmas Eve arrived. As I dragged myself into the auditorium after another day of hard work, I detected the notes of a beautiful Christmas song that immediately filled me with happiness. I looked to find the source of the song—it was a group of children singing on stage. Though disabled, they appeared extraordinarily earnest and sincere in front of the audience. Everyone attending was deeply moved by the sight. People wanted to donate some money or show their support.

At that point, I found all that I had done in the one-month time was worthwhile. And all the volunteers who had been participating in this Christmas party shared the same feeling: the true meaning of Christmas was giving and receiving love from one another.

The author thought her Christmas was unusual because ______.

A.she had a cozy Christmas dinner and fabulous fireworks

B.she had a more-exciting-than-ever Christmas holiday

C.she saw performances given by disabled children

D.she devoted herself to helping the disabled children

听力原文:A: Hi,Xiao Wang, and welcome back. How is the West Coast?

B: Terrific. I had a wonderful time. It was really nice to get away from the city for a while.

A: What did you think of Los Angeles?

B: It was all fight. I liked it better than I thought I would. It's very clean and spacious, and it's got lots of trees. The problem is transportation. The bus service is terrible, and, of course, they don't have a subway, so it's little difficult to get around. We had to rent a ear.

A: And what did you see?

B: Oh, the usual thing. We took a drive around Hollywood and looked at the stars' home, and then we went to Universal Studios and Disneyland.

A: How did you like Disneyland?

B: It was great. We really enjoyed it. We took all the rides, some of them twice, and had lots of fun. I felt just like a kid again.

A: Was the weather good?

B: Oh, great. It was nice and warm in Los Angeles and cool but comfortable in San Francisco?

A: Cool in San Francisco? That's surprising.

B: Yeah, it surprised us a bit, too. We didn't take any sweaters or anything. But they say it's always like that in August. Anyway, I just loved it. It's probably the most beautiful town in the U. S. —all those hills, and the bay, and those charming old Victorian houses.

A: So, you liked it better than Los Angeles?

B: Oh, yes. There's much more to see and do. And because it's smaller than Los Angeles, it's a lot easier to get around. There are lots of buses and streetcars, and of course, the cable ears.

A: What did you like best?

B: Oh, I don't know. It's hard to say. I liked Golden Gate Park and Fishermen's Wharf. But I guess, most of all, I liked the cable car ride--that was the most fun.

Where did Xiao Wang come back?

A.Los Angeles.

B.San Francisco.

C.Universal Studios and Disneyland.

ell us something about your afar work activities.

M: I guess not much different from everyone else. I'm fond of sports, and I run about 3 miles every day. I particularly enjoy cross-country running, where you have to run across fields, jump over streams and so on. While I'm running I think about all kinds of things, and I can become more healthy. Next year I'm going to try the London Marathon. It's a long, hard race—26 miles, or 42 kilometers and you have to be tough to finish, but I want to do it very much. I worry a bit about getting old, and I'd like to prove to myself that I'm still almost as well as I was twenty years ago. I'm interested in climbing as well as running. I'll never become an expert climber, but I know what I'm doing in the mountains. I successfully completed a course in snow and ice climbing when I was younger, and I've done a lot of easy climbs in the Alps during the last few years. My wife doesn't share my interest in mountains. She agreed to go climbing with me once, but she found that she felt sick as soon as she reached above 1,000 meters, so we decided to follow different hobbies.

W: You certainly seem to enjoy various types of recreation. All right, Mr. Smith. Thanks for your interesting talk.

听力原文:Speaker 1

I think the worst meeting I ever attended was one where there was an awful lot of talk in fact the chairperson bent over backwards to make sure everyone had their say, and clearly a lot of people felt strongly about the proposal on the table. We seemed to be pretty evenly divided on it, so it really needed a vote, but the chair chose to 'take the feeling of the meeting' instead, and I felt he was unduly influenced by the opinions of one or two very vocal people. And it was a pretty important matter, too, because our design department had come up with a range of materials that would entail radically changing the manufacturing process. We agreed to go ahead with it, but we were taking a real risk.

Speaker 2

Well, we once had a meeting about how to get raw materials exactly when we needed them: you see, sometimes they'd come in very soon after we'd placed an order, and would fill all our storage space, and at other times production would have to stop because we'd run out of what we needed. I reckoned that we should renegotiate the agreement we had with the company concerned, to build in a time-scale, And that was what we decided to do, but it turned out that in fact they weren't really interested, because in their terms we were too small a customer Oddly enough, one of our purchasing assistants knew about this, but hadn't been invited to the meeting. Still, it helped us when we drew up the agreement with o different firm,

Speaker 3

The company had recently been taken over, and we were selling in overseas markets for the first time. A new department was set up, which a number of people moved into from domestic sales. But they simply weren't up to the new demands. For instance, they weren't aware of cultural differences in how people negotiate, and as a result, our foreign sales just weren't happening. So we had a meeting about how to get the input we needed, and the outcome was that we decided to find a company that could provide an in-house seminar for us. The trouble was, some people had made up their minds about the best method before the meeting and though it was all very polite, they just ignored what the others said. Honestly, I was pretty annoyed,

Speaker 4

I wish everyone who chaired a meeting was trained in how to do iL For one thing, they really ought to make sure everyone gets the chance to say what they think, because otherwise people start wondering if there's any point in having a meeting, and that can be bad for morale. I was once in a project group, and we had a meeting to consider improvements to the way one particular division was structured, Well, the Chief Executive decided to attend, which wasn't a good idea, because the project leader, who was chairing the meeting, kept asking the CE what he thought, so some people more or less gave up, It's not that any of the project group particularly disagreed with the decisions, but they felt their opinions weren't being taken seriously.

Speaker 5

Our board of directors was in talks with one of our competitors about amalgamating, and the Managing Director called a meeting of the workforce to explain the implications. He started by saying that the synergies in the new relationship would mean we could cut costs, particularly in bulk purchasing of supplies, and anyone whose job disappeared would be offered retraining, But people didn't believe him and thought there would be mass redundancies. It got completely out of hand. Everyone was determined to have their say, people were shouting, and eventually the MD gave up and walked out. It was the most chaotic meeting I've ever attended, but at least we all felt a bit better for having let off steam! In fact demand for our products rose, and nobody was laid off after all,

The Writing's on the Wall?

Is it art or is it just vandalism(野蛮行为)? Well,it's still a crime, but graffiti(涂鸦) has changed since the days of spraying your name on a wall to mark your territory.Street art has become much more sophisticated since a 17-year-old called Demetrius started spraying his “tag”,TAKI 183,all over the NewYork underground in 1971,and hip-hop culture was born.Hip-hop is a mixture of art, music and dancing, poetry, language and fashion. It came from young inner-city people, who felt left out by their richerclassmates and who were desperate to express themselves in any way they could.

An experiment to control the spread of graffiti in Rochdale,Greater Manchester, has been so successful that plans have been made by local street artists for an international convention in June.“We're planning to get people together from different countries like France and Germany for a week,”says Liam, one of the organizers. The scheme started in 2000,and has attracted people of all age groups and both sexes.“We all share a common interest and get on really well with each other.”The first site to be chosen was a subway.“Before we began, people were afraid to use the subway. We had it cleaned up and now, with all the artists hanging out down there, people are using it again.People can relate to graffiti much more now.”By providing places to display their talents legally, there has been a fall in the amount of“tagging”on people's private property.

Street artist Temper developed his drawing skills at a young age.In art classes at school he was really frustrated because the Art teacher didn't spend time with him. They thought he was already very good at art and so spent more time with other students. So,at 12 years old,Temper started painting with all these guys he'd hooked up with who were about 22 years old.He looked up to them and loved what they were doing on the streets of Wolvehampton,England.“The whole hip-hop scene was built up of different things and I did a bit of everything. But it was always the graffiti I was best at,”he says.

Demetrius was a teenager from New York.
