听力原文: Something strange happens every year from August 6 to 15 on the West Faronia Island in Greece: thousands of snakes crawl out of the cliffs and caves to gather under the picture of the Virgin in local church. Several days later, these snakes leave the picture one by one.

This has lasted for several hundreds of years. Stranger still, these snakes had cross-shaped patterns on their heads. They crawl here and there under the picture of the Virgin, never hurting anyone. They even let people touch them.

There is a beautiful legend to these snakes. Several hundred years ago, there lived 24 nuns in the Virgin convent on Faronia Island. One day. a group of pirates came invading the land. They tied the nuns with ropes and did insult to them. Unable to tolerate the humiliation, the nuns all committed suicide. They turned into 24 snakes, "Sacred snakes".

The yearly visit of these snakes to the Virgin happens to be associated with the local religious festivals held during these days on this island. That is why these snakes are related to religion. But why these snakes come out on these days instead of any other days, and why they gather under the picture of the Virgin, has remained a mystery.

(30)

A.On the cliffs of an island.

B.In the eaves of an island.

C.Under the holy picture of the Virgin.

D.In the Virgin convent of an island.

M: That is a good idea, but I think the Internet might be more effective nowadays. Many of the companies I know use on-line marketing, and the results are far greater. If you'd like, I can find out more about it and let you know.

W: Hmm... Okay, why don't you do some research and let me know by this evening? I will talk to the boss and see what he thinks of this idea.

M: All right. I'll call up a guy I know who is a specialist in advertising. I might be able to give you something by this evening.

According to the woman, how did the new designer make a contribution to their new line of clothing?

A.By developing wearable clothes at an affordable price.

B.By getting in contact with several of the local newspapers.

Surveys have found that wages and benefits are not always the major determining factor for
employees who are looking to move between jobs. David Bikowski is a case in point. Last year he was laid off from his production job at a factory where he had worked for close to eight years. After several months of searching for a new job, he found employment at another factory in a nearby town. Although he would earn $100 a week less in the new position than he did at his old one, he took the job. He has a family to support and couldn't afford to stay out of work much longer. Just a few months after starting at his new position, he received an offer to return to his old job at his old salary. Bikowski decided to turn the offer down. Why? Because, he says, he finds that his new workplace is much less stressful than the old one. "We've been able to get by on what I've been earning at Strathmore (his new employer), and I know I'll be getting the usual raises as time goes on," he explains. "And it's better for my family in ways that money can't pay for. I'm more relaxed when I get home, I have better quality time with my kids. That's worth more than money to me." Bikowski represents a growing sentiment among the country's workforce. More and more workers are looking for less stressful lives, sociologists say. Work conditions are often given equal weight with wages and benefits when job decisions are made.

Why did David Bikowski leave his job?

A.He wanted a promotion.

B.He was fired.

C.He wanted more money.

D.He was laid off.

Robert Spring, a 19th century forger(伪造者), did well in his job that he was able to make

Robert Spring, a 19th century forger(伪造者), did well in his job that he was able to make his living for 15 years by. selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he made some money by selling his small but real collection of early US autographs(亲笔签名). Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating(模仿)signatures of George Washington and Ben' Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To reduce the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries(焦造品)to England and Canada for sale.

Forgers have a difficult time selling their products. A forger can't go to a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don't have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their works look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they treat paper and ink with chemicals.

After the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the southern states, so, Spring invented a respectable lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General" Stone Wall" Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny's financial (财政的)problems forced her to sell a great number of letters belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring dying in poverty.

Why did Spring sell his false autographs in England and Canada?

A.There was a greater demand there than in America.

B.There was less chance of being discovered there.

C.Britain was Spring's birthplace.

D.The prices were higher in England and Canada.

So too did a lot of the norths soldiers. One of the central themes of the political histor
y of the twelfth century was the continual effort by the northern kingdoms to extend their control southward in the hope of tapping into the Mediterranean bonanza. The German emperors starting with Otto I(936-973), for example, struggled ceaselessly to establish their control over the cities of northern Italy, since those cities generated more revenue than all of rural Germany combined. The kings of France used every means at their disposal to push the lower border of their kingdom to the Mediterranean shoreline. And the Normans who conquered and ruled England established outposts of Norman power in Sicily and the adjacent lands of southern Italy; the English kings also hoped or claimed at various times to be, either through money or marriage diplomacy, the rulers of several Mediterranean states. But as the northern world pressed southward, so too did some of the cultural norms and social mechanisms of the south expand northward. Over the course of the twelfth century, the feudal kingdoms witnessed a proliferation of cities modeled in large degree on those of the south. Contact with the merchants and financiers of the Mediterranean led to the development of northern industry and international trade(which helped to pay for many of the castles and cathedrals mentioned earlier). And education spread as well, culminating in the foundation of what is arguably medieval Europes greatest invention: the university. The relationship of north and south was symbiotic, in other words, and the contrast between them was more one of differences in degree than of polar opposition.

听力原文:M: Hello, Mary. Why do you look so upset?

W: Well, every February, candy, flowers and gifts are everywhere. But where is mine? I hate this St. Valentine's Day. Who on earth is this saint and why do we have to celebrate this holiday?

M: Oh, don't be so depressed; your Mr. Right is waiting for you not far away. Just be a little patient. And I can tell you that the saint himself was not very happy on this day either.

W: Why? That's interesting, tell me.

M: Well, there are several stories about this man from both Christian and ancient Roman traditions.

W: That means we are not very sure of the exact history of it, are we?

M: Yes, but we do know that February has long been a month of romance.

W: Then what happened to this Valentine? Why did you say it's a tragedy?

M: Well, one story said that Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself. When he was a prisoner, Valentine fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, in which he signed "From your Valentine".

W: Wow, it's so sad and so romantic!

M: Well, so don't be upset anymore. At least your future Valentine will be there and alive.

W: That doesn't help. I'm still very frustrated.
