听力原文:We are rapidly nearing the end of this course in history of classical music. We ha

ve covered several centuries in a very short time. Much too short to do the music justice, of course, but then this is a survey course. From now until the end of this term, we will be talking about and listening to electronic music. You probably already know that it was in the 1950s that musical computers and synthesizers first appeared in universities. The first commercial synthesizers were sold about this time, too. The sophistication and complexity of these instruments has now increased to the point that they can produce almost any kind of sound. Some alarmists believe these new instruments will bring an end to classical music or that they already have. You know I don't share this view, though I agree we are in the midst of revolution in instrument design. This, however, is not the first such revolution in musical history and probably not the last one either. Remember we've already studied the similar case in the early 19th century when the piano replaced the harpsichord and modern brass and wind instruments came into being. One of the most important reasons for the great popularity of electronic instruments is, of course, their relatively low price. Well, just look at it, only about 400 dollars for a piano. Naturally this has done a lot to increase sales for electronic instruments, expecting them to completely replace acoustic instruments.

What is the speaker's main topic?

A.The replacement of the harpsichord by the piano.

B.The development of electronic musical instruments.

C.The relative costs of different types of musical instruments.

D.The performance of classical music on synthesizers.

听力原文: Yesterday we discussed the problem of rising prices, or, in the economist's terms, inflation. We noted that, during periods of inflation, all prices and incomes do not rise at the same rate. Some incomes rise more slowly than the cost of living, and a few do not rise at all. Other incomes rise more rapidly than the cost of living.

We concluded that persons with fixed incomes, for example, the elderly who depend upon pensions, and persons with slow-rising incomes as, for example , an employee with a salary agreed to in a long-term contract, will be most seriously affected by inflation. Please remember that while their dollar incomes, stay the same, the cost of goods and services rises, and in effect, real income decreases, that is, they are able to purchase less with the same amount of money.

We also talked about the fact that stockholders and persons with business interests and investments would probably benefit most from inflation, since high prices would increase sales receipts, and profits would likely rise faster than the cost of living.

And now, before we begin today's lecture, are there any questions about the term, inflation or any of the examples given in our discussion so far?

What's the main purpose of the talk?

A.To introduce the concept of inflation.

B.To discuss the causes of inflation.

C.To review yesterday's lecture on inflation.

D.To argue in favor of inflation.

听力原文: We are now living in a world in which robots are taking over much of the work.Robots make our cars, fly our planes and work out wages.

But these robots are not mechanical men and women. They do not look like us.They are machines specially built to do some of the things that human beings can.

Although they may not look like us,robots need some human features in order to be able to do human work.First of all they need some kind of brain.Their "brain" is a computer, which has a memory to human member instructions and ability to control other equipment.Another essential feature of many robots is an arm that can do the kind of things that human beings can with their arms.One-armed robots are now coming into widespread use in industry. They are being used, for example,on car assembly lines.

The great advantage of robots over human workers is that they can work non-stop for long periods. They never get tired, and always work with the same accuracy. They can also work in conditions that humans could not bear.Last but not least,as more robots are built, their cost will come down.

Although robots are rapidly taking over many jobs in industry, they seem a long way from taking over in the home. The problem is that it would take a very complex and costly robot to perform. half the tasks involved in housework.

According to the speaker, what can the present-day robots do?

A.Drive cars.

B.Fly planes.

C.Pay wages.

D.Repair machines.

听力原文: In February last year, my wife lost her job. Just as suddenly, the 6wner of the greenhouse where I worked as manager died at heart attack. His family announced that they were going to close the business because no one in the family wanted to run it. Things looked pretty gloomy. My wife and I read the want ads each day. Then one morning, as I was hanging out the "Going Out of Business" sign at the greenhouse, the door opened, and in walked a customer. She was an office manager whose company had just moved into the new office park on the edge of town. She was looking for pots and plants to place in the reception-areas in the offices. "I don't know anything about plants," she said, "I'm sure in a few weeks they'll all be dead." While I was helping her select her purchases ray mind was racing. Perhaps as many as a dozen firms have recently opened offices in the new office park, and there were several hundred more acres with construction underway. That afternoon, I drove out to the office park. By six o'clock that evening, I had signed contracts with seven companies to rent plants from me and pay me a fee to maintain them. Within a week, I had worked out an agreement to lease the greenhouse from the owner's family. Business is now increasing rapidly, and one day, we hope to be the proud owners of the greenhouse.

(33)

A.It was located in a park.

B.Its owner died of a heart attack.

C.It went bankrupt all of a sudden.

D.Its potted plants were for lease only.

听力原文:W: Why don't you begin by telling something about yourself?

M: What would you like to know?

W: The usual, you know, something about your background, experience and anything personal that you feel is important.

M: Well, I was born in a city in the southwest and went to school there, right up through college. My father is a lawyer, and my mother is a doctor.

W: Sounds as if you come from a very professional family.

M: That's right. One of my uncles teaches computers in a university and has influenced me a lot.

W: What made you decide to come to the east coast and get into the computer business here?

M: Well, after I finished my engineering degree, I began to specialize in computer software technology and I even had my own company for a while. But I think the cities on the east coast are developing more rapidly and offer a more promising future. So I finally decided to leave my hometown, even though it meant tuming down some job offers there.

W: Sounds impressive. Why don't you have your credentials and references sent to me.'? I'll show them to the manager. We'll get back to you in a week.

M: Thank you very much.

(20)

A.After he moved to a city in the southwest.

B.Before he finished high school.

听力原文:M: This, in short, is what I've done with my life. Now you tell me all about your
s.

W: I do a lot of traveling for X. T. L. , a big import export firm. My company has expanded very rapidly and I do market research for them.

M: Market research! I've often heard about that, but I don't quite know what it is.

W: Like many others, I compile all the information manufacturers, importers and exporters are interested in. Businessmen need a lot of information, not only about competition but also about prospective customers.

M: Manufacturers compete pretty hard, don't they?

W: They do, and they plan their marketing policy according to the information provided by market research, so that risks may be reduced as much as possible.

M: Then the aim is to find out what articles are demanded by a certain market, and when and at what price those articles should be sold, isn't it?

W: That's it.

M: And how's this information obtained?

W: Our Sales Department supplies us with figures; besides, we do a lot of reading, and we ask consumers for their opinion. As long as a businessman makes good use of the information he'll be able to reduce risks and losses.

M: All this is very interesting, but I thought you were going to tell me about your life.

W: But this is my life.

What's the woman's job about?

A.Gathering market information.

B.Making marketing policies.

C.Traveling to promote sales.

D.Importation and exportation.

听力原文:W: Welcome to our program. Today Prof. Johnson is going to talking about solar po
wer.

M: Thank you. As you can see, little by little, Americans are turning to solar power, tapping the strength of the sun for energy.

W: Yeah, that's true. Sunlight has already been used for heating or cooling homes and office buildings in the sunny south.

M: Experts say all signs point to the birth of the solar energy industry. Right now, an increasing number of companies are selling solar collector panels to heat and cool homes or to heat water. The glass and metal panels each cost from $100 to more than $500, and the three or four-bedroom home usually requires a dozen or more. They look like sandwiches. They are usually placed in rooftops. Nobody knows how many have been sold, and in addition, many people have built their own units. It has been estimated that solar power equipment will be a $1.3 billion industry by 1995, and more than a million homes will use sunlight for heat, air conditioning or to generate electricity, both in the cities and in countryside.

W: Wow! That is really big business.

What do we learn about the use of solar energy in the U. S. ?

A.It is very well established.

B.It is relatively new.

C.It is found in one million homes.

D.It is being rapidly expanded.
