听力原文: Last summer I was working in Washington, D. C., as an intern at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. In one way it was an awful job because the purpose was to figure out ways to identify dead people, like identifying the remains of soldiers in wars, or bodies after disasters such as plane crashes or earthquakes. But the exciting part was that I was working with a scientist who heads a program that is identifying bodies by their DNA structures. As you know, DNA is the name for the genetic material in our bodies. In the past, all soldiers had to wear a necklace and a metal tag with their names and identification numbers on the tag. But this method of identification was not very accurate because the tags could be lost or switched around. So in my job I worked at helping the Institute to set up a DNA file to store the genetic information for new soldiers. The armed forces will get a blood sample from each person in the military. Then, if the body of a military person cannot be identified by its tag, fingerprints, or dental records, the body tissue can be analyzed and matched with DNA records at the Institute.

(23)

A.To prevent disease among military personnel.

B.To investigate serious crimes in the military.

C.To find ways of identifying bodies of soldiers.

D.To store old military journals and diaries.

听力原文: Megan Della Selva, a sophomore at George Washington University, has already traded e-mail messages with her mom, just to say hi, Maria Minkarah, the friend she is having lunch with, has just talked to her dad, to report on a doctor's visit and her latest thoughts about studying abroad. The young women keep in close touch with their families, discussing matters big and small, academic and

personal. Interviews with students on a variety of campuses suggest that many turn to their parents for help with everything from roommate troubles to how to improve the paper they e-mailed home. Perhaps the most striking thing was the tone students had when talking about their parents. , fond, warm and admiring. The sense of parents as people to be admired was widespread.

Not all college students are this closely connected with their parents. But university officials, students and their families say that the generation gap is nothing like what it used to be, now that baby boomers, once so alienated from their parents, have become parents themselves. "This generation of parents is more involved," said Jennifer Bell, coordinator of the parents office at North Carolina State University. "Thirty years ago, parents were content to drive their kids to college, drop them off, and pick them up at graduation. Now there are different expectations, because they've been involved in their kids' lives all through school."

Cellphones and e-mail have a lot to do with what university administrators and parents alike say has been a big change over the last decade. Hundreds of colleges nationwide have recognized the new reality by giving parents a stronger presence on campus, through a host of offices created to deal with parents' queries and concerns.

听力原文: Father's Day was first observed in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. [32]Mrs. Dodd first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1906. [33]In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national ceremony of [34]Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June, coming almost sixty years after Mother's Day had been proclaimed a national holiday. 听力原文: The problem of the homeless has become very serious in the United States. Almost in every community, you can find homeless people. An ironical case is: in November, 1993, a woman died on a street in Washington, D.C., the nation's capital, and she died at a bus-stop across the street from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

People become homeless for various reasons. Some may not be able to pay for the housing they used to have, because they have lest their job and cannot find another place they can afford. Others have mental disorders, or are addicted to drags or alcohol, and there are not enough centres to care for them.

As ways to help these people, the federal government and many communities have set up all kinds of projects. Some programs include permanent housing, training for jobs and treatment for people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol. Some communities have opened centers that offer services for as many as 700 people. The homeless can stay as long as they want.

People are making efforts to solve the problem. However, it will not be easy, because it is a personal and economic problem as well as a social problem.

B.US Department of Housing and Urban Development threw the dead woman out onto the street.
