wn. Today, we are going to hear Several current hits of the world's most popular artists.

Well, at the beginning, I would like to say a few words to my dear listeners who are not very familiar with this program.

Because many people want to listen to and understand pop songs, radio producers at BCD International have made hundreds of programs over the years. We not only have access to the stars of the music world, but have a vast library of "golden oldish" Classics, as well as the "latest releases".

For those of yon who like a bit of background with your favorite music--there's The History of Pop and The Road to Music. These two series bring you the language of pop music and information about the periods and the artists.

If you want to hear from the artists themselves, there's a new series called About the Big Hits. This is based on interviews with popular singers and songwriters. They speak to us about the meanings and ideas behind their songs.

If you want to understand the words to the big music hits, Pop Words is the program for you. After all, it's hard enough for native English speakers to understand most pop songs--so, if English isn't your first language, you shouldn't be surprised if the words to many songs leave you in the dark. It was to address exactly this problem that BCD International started broadcasting Pop Words just over 23 years ago...

听力原文: By the end of the 1980s, U2 had established itself not only as one of the world's most popular bands but also as one of the most innovative. The members are Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. The band members were attending a Dublin secondary school when they began rehearsing in spite of their lack of technical expertise. The band's early records were characterized by an intense spirituality, and they commented on social and political issues, with compassion and tenderness.

The group became renowned for its inspirational live performances before it made much of an impact on the pop charts. But with the multimillion-selling success of The Joshua Tree album and the number one hits With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, U2 became pop stars.

On Rattle and Hum, the bend explored American roots music—blues, country, and folk—with typical earnestness, but were ridiculed by some critics who found the project shallow.

U2 reinvented itself for the new decade, reemerging in 1991 with the album Achtung Baby and a sound heavily influenced by European experimental, electronic, and disco music. However, despite the flashy exterior, the band's lyrics remained obsessed with matters of the soul. In 2000, U2 released the aptly entitled (All That You Can't Leave Behind), which combined the elements of the band's earlier music.

B.Inspirational live performance.

It seems the art of survival-or continual positive projection-in the world of pop music th
ese days, depends very much on change. If artists fail to recreate their image--chameleon(变色龙)- like, over and over again--they risk facing accusations of dullness; that they are not fashionable.

This phenomenon is especially prevalent(普遍的) in the female ranks. It is not sufficient for an artist to be beautiful and sexy. These characteristics too must be changed often, and remodelled to avoid being bogged down(陷入困境) by a stereotype(老一套).

Two examples of the rock "n" roll art of move and change are Cher and Madonna, the latter a brilliant illustration of the trend. Her latest disc, "Something to Remember", displays how she has so effectively been able to stay at the top without diminishing credibility in her particular field. (For these purposes, we will forget her unworthy flirtation with sex, that horrible book and her swear-word-ridden, cigar-chewing appearance on the David Letterman Show. )

This collection demonstrates how she has moderate her image at relevant times to give contrast and definition to her career. But it offers more than simply a study in rock fashion history. There is also a solid collection of quality music.

It opens with the newish "I Want You with Massive Attack", a faintly morose and teary plea and quickly moves back in time to her earlier moments: "Crazy for You", "This Used To Be My Playground" and "You'll See". There is also a nice version of "Love Don't Live Here Anymore". So this is more than an exploitative offering.

However, Chef's latest package, It's a Man's World’, cannot be reviewed proudly. In her past--the most memorable moment for this reviewer being her visit to a US warship amid cheering sailors for "If I Could Turn Back Time'-she has competed admirably. And she has demonstrated the classic features of the change syndrome(综合症). But this is a tired and dull Chef, Perhaps attempting to moderate her sexy and boy-crazy image in this session but failing.

It can be inferred from paragraph 1 that in order to survive in the world of pop music, artists need to______.

A.build a chameleon like image

B.recreate themselves over and over again

C.avoid being dull at all costs

D.stay beautiful and sexy

Rock Music in its Early Stage

Rock music, which is short for rock 'n' roll, in its true sense, refers to the music of the young. Rock music is American on both sides of the family if you trace its pedigree far enough. Its technical elements have come down through the commercial rock-and-roll and rhythm-and-blues of the 1950s from the two deepest fountains of American popular music, black blues and white country music. But in 1965, the two traditions fused to create the genre now widely known as rock music, largely thanks to the emergence of Bob Dylan. Now, rock is a part of popular music today. It is played and listened to in almost all the countries of the world.

Until the 1950's, American popular music was divided into three separate styles, each with its own performers, musical content, and audience. One style. was called "pop", and it served most Americans. Pop songs came from movies, Broadway musicals, and pop composers. The songs were mainly simple, 32-bar melodies whose words were about love. They were played by bands in dancehalls, restaurants, nightclubs, and on radio. The bands consisted of any where from six to more than 20 musicians playing combinations of trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and clarinet, with a rhythm section of drums, guitar, string bass, or piano. Soloists or small vocal groups generally accompanied the bands.

In the late 1930's and 1940's, there were hundreds of "big bands". The most popular included the white bands of Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Woody Herman. There were also the more jazz-style. black bands of Jimmie Lunceford, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington. After World War II, individual singers such as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Nat ("King") Cole, Doris Day, and Patti Page, most of whom had been band singers, became much more popular than the bands themselves.

The second style, "rhythm-and-blues", came from the blues sung by black performers along with the fast dance music that had grown out of ragtime and boogie-woogie. It was the popular music of the black people of the United States, played and sung in taverns and clubs or listened to on records in jukeboxes(自动点唱机). (Once called "race" music, it is now called "soul".) Two of the most popular rhythm-and-blues performers of the 1940's and early 1950's were Chuck Berry, B. B. King.

Both the white pop bands and the black rhythm-and-blues musicians were influenced by jazz and by Negro spirituals and gospel music(福音音乐).

The third style. is now called "country-and-western", but before World War II it was often called "hillbilly" music. It includes the commercialized folk music of the rural South and the cowboy music of the Southwest. The main center of the music has always been Nashville, Tennessee. It is performed largely by soloists accompanied by guitar and sometimes by horns and a rhythm section. The popular singers of the 1940's and 1950's included Hank Williams.

Rock and roll was the name given to the music that developed when these three separate styles came together in the early 1950's. It is widely believed that the term "rock and roll" was first used by a Cleveland disc jockey(流行音乐节目主持人) named Alan Freed. He was one of the first people to bring rhythm-and-blues to white audiences. He did this on his radio program and through concerts he produced, beginning in 1951, which presented black and white performers to audiences of black and white teenagers. That year, Alan Freed began a regular program featuring rhythm-and-blues music; Freed called the program "Moondog's Rock and Roll Party". The show became an instant hit among local white teenagers. Between 1951 and 1954, the white adolescent fascination with rhythm-and-blues that Alan Freed championed and popularized became a nationwide phenomenon. But not any one person created rock and roll. Rock was born as a result of changes in the music, broadcasting, advertising and e

Music Made Easy

"Sampling" old songs to create new hits made Puff Daddy a star. Now the revolution is coming to desktop.

Ever dreamed of becoming a pop star? One of the best things about the PC revolution is that it enables amateurs to do creative work that looks professional. Thousands of people have used programs like Paintshop Pro, Adobe Premiere and Microsoft Publisher to retouch (润饰) photos, edit footage and lay out slick newsletters. But what about music? If you can't play an instrument or carry a tune, no computer in the world can make you sound like Christina Aguilera.

That is about to change, thanks to a small New York City start-up called MusicHall 2000. Instead of launching yet another website where people can download MP3s, this company plans to do something much cooler: give away software that turns ordinary music lovers into composers by letting them create their own songs using prerecorded musical snippets or pieces of existing pop songs--called "samples." "You can envelop people in your sound without going through the torture of training," says MusicHall president David Danon, 24. "Plus you can record your own music without spending hundreds of dollars on a studio," adds Adam Strauss, 25, the company's chief operating officer, "We saw a way to turn consumers into producers."

Making songs with MusicHall is a lot like layering a cake: you can put down a bass line, add drums and some guitar licks (小过门), then top it off with a horn riff (即兴重复段)--it's all up to you. Within an hour of experimentation we created a song that sounded a lot like the thumping dance music of a club. It's intuitive (直觉的) enough for the average computer user to fool around with, yet powerful enough to make a professionalsounding CD, and MusicHall believes that it will appeal to both complete novices and trained musicians. That's why it's integrating (使结合) the software with the Internet so people can easily exchange their work with other wanna-be composers or distribute it to potential fans.

There are two parts of MusicHall 2000: the software and the website. The CD-ROM contains the Virtual Studio program (it consists of a pair of music editors from Sonic Foundry, Acid DJ2.0 and Sound Forge 4.5) and a library of samples. As you arrange your samples, you can add effects like reverb (混响装置), raise or lower the tempo (拍子), or even run the sample backwards. With additional equipment, you can record your own vocals (声乐作品) or instrumentals and throw them into the mix.

That's all a lot of fun, but it's when you connect to the website that MusicHall shows its potential. Once you've exhausted the samples included on the CD, you'11 be able to download new ones from the website. Using the on-screen world map, you can grab an Indian sitar or Congolese drumbeats. Some samples will be free; others will cost a small sum; the company is recruiting brand-name producers to contribute some of their hottest beats in exchange for a cut of the revenue (税收). The site is divided into several sections: the Audio Graffiti hall contains members' home pages, where people can post their own samples and songs for others to download; the Star Tracks hall hosts a weekly battle of MusicHall's virtuosos (名师). An instant messenger will let people exchange samples and songs in real time.

MP3. com meets eBay by way of RealNetworks--a cleverly cobble-together (拼凑) project, to be sure. But it works--and the ease of stringing together tunes of your own is highly addictive. There are signs that audiences might be receptive to this: Fueled by the rise of hip-hop (the popular street culture of big-city and especially inner-city youth, characterized by graffiti art, break dancing, and rap music) and electronics, DJ/producers like Dr. Dre, RZA, Roni Size and Fatboy Slim have stepped from behind the mixing boards and into the spotlight (聚光灯). Wielding their turntables and samplers as

Silence Please

If there is one group of workers across the Western world who will be glad that Christmas is over, that group is shop workers.

It is not that they like to complain. They realize that they are going to be rushed off their feet at Christmas. They know that their employers need happy customers to make their profits that pay their wages. But there is one thing about working in a shop over Christmas that is too bad to tolerate.

That thing is music. These days, all shops and many offices have what is known as "Piped music" or "muzak" playing for all the hours that they are open. Muzak has an odd history. During the 1940s, music was played to cows as part of a scientific experiment. It was found that cows which listened to simple, happy music produced more milk. Perhaps workers and customers who listened to simple, happy music would be more productive and spend more money.

In fact, nobody knows what effect playing muzak in shops has on profits. It is simply something that everybody does. But we are learning more about the effect of constantly repeated hearings of songs on the people who have to hear them all the time.

Research shows that repeated hearings of complex pieces of music bring greater enjoyment before becoming tiresome. And that point come much sooner with simple songs.

"That's especially the case with tunes that are already familiar. Once that tipping point3 is reached, repeated listening become unpleasant, says Professor John Sloboda of UK's Keele University's music psychology group. "And the less control you have over what you hear, the less you like it.

That's why police forces in the US often try and resolve hostage situations by playing pop songs over and over again at high volume. Eventually, it becomes too much for the criminals to stand and they give up.

The problem gets particularly bad at Christmas, when the muzak consists entirely of the same few festive tunes played over and over again. What makes it worse for the shop workers is that they already know these runes. They get bored very quickly. Then they get irritated. Then they get angry.

Shop workers in Austria recently threatened to go on strike for the right to silence. "Shop workers can't escape the Christmas muzak. They feel as if they are terrorized all day. Especially 'Jingle Bells'. It arouses aggressive feelings," said Gottfried Rieser, of the Austrian shop worker's union.

It is not just shop workers who complain. A survey this year by UK recruitment website Retailchoice. com found that Christmas is not only the most testing time for shop workers, but that almost half had complaints from customers about muzak. And the British Royal National Institute for the Deaf estimates that some stores play Jingle Bells 300 times each year.

"That's acoustic torture, says Nigel Rodgers of Pipedown. A group against muzak. "It's not loud but the repetitive nature causes psychological stress. "

The group wants the government to legislate against unwanted music in stores, hospitals, airports, swimming pools and other public places, claiming it raises the blood pressure and depresses the immune system.

Perhaps groups like Pipedown don't really have much to complain about. After all, surely the real point is that people have money to spend. Why complain about a bit of music?

The shop workers in the Western world are glad when Christmas is over because they don't have to

A.rush their feet off all day.

B.listen to the music playing all the time in the shop.

C.work overtime to make more profits for the boss.

D.try to please the customers.

听力原文: The first reality TV show in the world was called Expedition Robinson and it was shown in Sweden in 1997. Half the population of the country watched the final event and a new kind of TV program was born. Two years later in Holland, the first series of Big Brother was filmed. Again, it was a great success and the final program was watched by 15 million people. Now more than 20 countries around the world have Big Brother or Expedition Robinson on their TV screens. The ordinary people who take part in the programs are known by millions of people in their own countries and reality TV has become big, big business.

For the TV producers, reality TV is a dream which come true because many of the programs cost nothing to make. At some point, the television viewers are asked to telephone the program to vote or to apply to take part in the show. It is the cost of these telephone calls that pays for the shows. One of the most popular shows is Pop Idol. In the show a group of attractive young people are made into pop stars. TV viewers vote for their favorite person on the show. The winner makes a record and millions of copies of the record are sold. His or her pictures are published on the covers of magazines or on the front pages of newspapers, and then, they are quickly forgotten.

But not everyone is happy about reality TV. In Portugal, two TV channels got into trouble because they showed too much of the personal lives of the people in the shows. In France, reality TV is called "rubbish TV" and the TV studios of Big Brother were attacked three times in one week. In Greece, Big Brother was described as "against human rights and civilization".
