听力原文: Venice is the "Queen" of the Adriatic Sea. Every year thousands of people from all over the world travel to Italy to visit the city. Do you know why they like to go there for a visit?

Venice is a very beautiful city. It is quite different from other cities in the world. There aren't any roads or streets in the city so there aren't any cars or buses. There are many canals in the city. There is one big canal and one hundred and seventy-seven small canals. People move up and down the canals in boats to go to work, go shopping or visit their friends.

But Venice is sinking. It is going down and the water is going up. In 2040 Venice will be under water. The Adriatic Sea will cover the city. The Venetians love their city and they want to stay there, so they want to save Venice from the sea. They do not want to leave. How can they save Venice? They can build some strong huge walls and gates in the sea. The gates will close to keep too much water out. Thus Venice will not sink.

(30)

A.There are 177 canals in Venice.

B.Venice is sinking into the Adriatic Sea.

C.There are many kinds of boats on the canals.

D.There aren't any roads or streets in Venice.

The Nile made Egypt's civilization possible. The river is more than 400 miles long. In its
fertile valley crops are grown for food and cotton for clothing. Mud from the river bottom makes good bricks for houses. Thus ways of getting food, clothing and shelter were close for the Egyptians.

The Nile is a highway for the people of Egypt. Flat bottomed boats and large narrow barges carry products from one city to another. There are also passenger boats on the Nile, carrying people up and down the river. In ancient times huge blocks of stones were floated down the river on barges. These stones are used in making buildings and monuments.

For thousands of years the Egyptians have depended on the Nile for their crops. The land on both sides of the Nile is desert, where crops cannot be raised. But crops grow well in the Nile Valley. In fact, several different crops are often grown on the same land during the same year.

Once the Nile flooded each year, overflowed its banks, and carried rich soil in land every summer. These floods were caused by early summer rains.

At present there is a series of dams on the Nile. Water raised high in the river each summer as usual. The people do not let the Nile flood, however. They store the water behind dams. It is now possible to use the water as needed, not just at flood time.

In the past______.

A.there was rain all the year long

B.the Nile flooded every year

C.the Nile became deeper and deeper after each rainfall

D.the Nile was not a long river

听力原文: Something strange happens every year from August 6 to 15 on the West Faronia Island in Greece: thousands of snakes crawl out of the cliffs and caves to gather under the picture of the Virgin in local church. Several days later, these snakes leave the picture one by one.

This has lasted for several hundreds of years. Stranger still, these snakes had cross-shaped patterns on their heads. They crawl here and there under the picture of the Virgin, never hurting anyone. They even let people touch them.

There is a beautiful legend to these snakes. Several hundred years ago, there lived 24 nuns in the Virgin convent on Faronia Island. One day. a group of pirates came invading the land. They tied the nuns with ropes and did insult to them. Unable to tolerate the humiliation, the nuns all committed suicide. They turned into 24 snakes, "Sacred snakes".

The yearly visit of these snakes to the Virgin happens to be associated with the local religious festivals held during these days on this island. That is why these snakes are related to religion. But why these snakes come out on these days instead of any other days, and why they gather under the picture of the Virgin, has remained a mystery.

(30)

A.On the cliffs of an island.

B.In the eaves of an island.

C.Under the holy picture of the Virgin.

D.In the Virgin convent of an island.

听力原文: It seems like almost everyone buys or sells goods at yard sales in the United States. People place used personal or household goods for sale outside their homes (30) .

The LT. S. one Twenty-Seven Corridor Sale is known as the World's Longest Yardsale. It began in 1987. The event's headquarters is in Jamestown, Tennessee. They wanted people to consider traveling on these roads instead of the popular interstate system.

Every year, the four-day sale begins on the first Thursday in August. So August 7th of this year marks the opening of the twenty-first World's Longest Yardsale. The event now crosses five states--Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama.

Tens of thousands of sellers take part. Some people who live along or near Route one Twenty-seven simply place their goods for sale in front of their house. Others use nearby public spaces, like parks. People sell everything and anything at the sale: furniture, clothing, toys, books and music. You can also find sporting goods, farm equipment, tools and art. And, lots of other things (32) . Tens of thousands of people from across the country drive along the road in search of interesting things to buy. Route one Twenty-Seven becomes crowded with vehicles.

A.They are places for people to exchange their goods.

B.They are places for residents to heap the useless things.

C.They are sales set for residents to sell and buy used things.

D.They are sales set by stores to put their goods on sale.

听力原文:M: Every year, as the seasons change, many birds, fish, insects and land animals
start to move. Some travel thousands of kilometers. For many it is for the first time. All of them have one thing in common: they know where they are going and they make no mistakes.

This is migration. There are many things which help animals to migrate. Birds and other animals have a body clock which tells them about changes in temperature and periods of light. Birds and some insects use their eyes to measure and compare the position of the sun from different place.

Many people now believe magnetism is very important. The earth itself is a magnet and every kind of life is affected in some way by its magnetic, fields.

But there are still many questions without answers, for example, the migration of eels. European eels travel down their rivers and into the Atlantic Ocean. They then swim 5600 kilometers to the Sargasso Sea, where they lay their eggs. The eels then die. The baby eels are carried by the Gulf Stream to Europe, a journey which takes two and a half years. They swim back up the rivers. There they live for about ten years before the return journey to the Atlantic. How do they do this? We know what happens to the eels but not how or why.

"Migration" in this passage means

A.the seasonal moving of creatures.

B.settling down in a new place.

C.the activity controlled by magnetism.

D.knowing where one is going and making no mistakes.

听力原文:W: Almost five million people are married each year in the United States. About o
ne in every eight of these weddings takes place in June, the traditional month for weddings.

Getting married can be as simple as a five-minute ceremony performed by a judge in a law office. Or it can be a traditional religious ceremony at home, or in a church.

The average age of an American woman being married for the first time is about twenty-four years. The average age for a man is twenty-five. Most young men and women get engaged about a year before the wedding.

In the Nineteen-Sixties and Seventies, many young Americans decided not to have traditional, formal weddings. Many brides and grooms wrote their own wedding ceremonies. These often included poetry and personal statements about their goals in marriage. Some grooms wore old blue jeans to their weddings. More than a few brides were married in their bare feet. It was not unusual to be married on a sandy beach or on a mountainside.

In the last ten years, however, big formal weddings have become popular again. Experts say the average size of formal weddings now is two-hundred guests. Most formal wedding patties are held at hotels or high-priced eating places. There are fresh flowers and paid photographers. Musicians play for dancing, and hired servants present the wedding dinner.

A big wedding takes months to plan, and it can cost thousands of dollars.

How many people get married in June each year in the United States?

A.About five million.

B.About two and a half million.

C.About one point eight million.

D.About six hundred and twenty-five thousand.
