Disease, Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention

Disease may be defined as the abnormal state in which part or all of the body is not properly adjusted or is not capable of carrying on all its required functions. There are marked variations in the extent of the disease and in its effect on the person.

In order to treat a disease, the doctor obviously must first determine the nature of the illness--that is, make a diagnosis. A diagnosis is the conclusion drawn from a number of facts put together.

The doctor must know the symptoms, which are the changes in body function felt by the patient;and the signs (also called objective symptoms) which the doctor himself can observe. Sometimes a characteristic group of signs (or symptoms) accompanied a given disease. Such a group is called a syndrome. Frequently certain laboratory tests are performed and the results evaluated by the physician in making his diagnosis.

Although nurses do not diagnose, they play an extremely valuable role in this process by observing closely for signs, encouraging the patient to talk about himself and his symptoms, and then reporting this information to the doctor. Once the patient&39;s disorder is known, the doctor prescribes a course of treatment, also referred to as therapy. Many measures in this course of treatment are carried out by the nurse under the physician&39;s orders.

In recent years physicians, nurses and other health workers have taken on increasing responsibilities in prevention. Throughout most of medical history, the physician&39;s aim has been to cure a patient of an existing disease. However, the modern concept of prevention seeks to stop disease before it actually happens -- to keep people well through the promotion of health. A vast number of organizations exist for this purpose, ranging from the World Health Organization (WHO)on an international level down to local private and community health programs. A rapidly growing responsibility of the nursing profession is educating individual patients toward the maintenance of total health--physical and mental.

By disease it means the condition in which one or more parts of the body fail to function properly. 查看材料

U. S. Life Expectancy Hits New High

Life expectancy rates in the United States are at an all-time high, with people born in 2005 projected to live for nearly 78 years, a new federal study finds.

The finding reflects a continuing trend of increasing life expectancy that began in 1955, when the average American lived to be 69.6 years old. By 1995, life expectancy was 75.8 years, and by2005, it had risen to 77.9 years, according to the report released Wednesday.

"This is good news." said report co-author Donna Hoyert, a health scientist at the National Center for Health Statistics. "It&39;s even better news that it is a continuation of trends, so it is a long period of continuing improvement."

Despite the upward trend, the United States still has a lower life expectancy than some 40 other countries, according to the U. S. Census (人口普查)Bureau. The country with the longest life expectancy is Andorra at 83.5 years, followed by Japan, Macau, San Marino and Singapore.

Much of the increase owes to declining death rates from the three leading causes of death in the country-heart disease, cancer and stroke.

In addition, in 2005, the U. S. death rate dropped to an all-time low of less than- 800 deaths per100,000.

Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, said, "News that life expectancy is increasing is, of course, good. But the evidence we have suggests that there is more chronic disease than ever in the U. S."

Adding years to life is a good thing, Katz said. "But adding vital life to years is at least equally important. If we care about living well, and not just longer, we still have our work cutout for us." he said.

Since 1955, life expectancy rates in the U. S. have ___________. 查看材料

Survey Finds Many Women Misinformed about Cancer

63 percent of American women think that if there&39;s no family history of cancer, you&39;re not likely to develop the disease, a new survey found.

In fact, most people who develop cancer have no family history of cancer. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) (美国妇产科医师学会) , which sponsored the survey.

"Too many women are dying from cancer," Dr. Douglas W. Laube, ACOG&39;s immediate past president, said during a Friday teleconference. "An estimated 200,070 women will die in the U. S.this year, and over 600,078 women will be diagnosed with cancer. The results of this survey found a worrisome (令人担忧的) gap in women&39;s knowledge about cancer."

Based on the findings, ACOG is increasing its efforts to educate women about cancer and the need for regular screening tests.

Although the survey found many misconceptions (错误观念) about cancer,76 percent of women surveyed did say they feel knowledgeable about how they can reduce their risk of the disease.

However, only 52 percent said they were doing enough to reduce that risk. And 10 percent said they hadn&39;t done anything in the past year to lower their risk.17 percent said they wouldn&39;t change their lifestyles, even if changes would lower their cancer risk.

Many women said they were afraid to undergo screening out of fear of finding cancer.20 percent said they didn&39;t want to know if they had cancer.

In response to these findings, ACOG will launch on Oct.29 a new website, Protect&Detect:

What Women Should Know about Cancer. The guide is designed to help women to take charge of their health and improve their understanding of their risk of cancer, and the lifestyle. steps they can take to cut that risk.

Many American women have apoor knowledge of cancer. 查看材料

根据下面材料,回答题。

Diabetes (糖尿病) and Eye Damage

Over 2 million Canadians have diabetes. It is the leading cause of blindness in North Americans under 65 years of age. Diabetes is a condition where the body either cannot produce enough insulin (胰岛素) or cannot respond properly to insulin. Insulin is important because it moves glucose (葡萄糖), a simple sugar, into the body&39;s cells from the blood. The food people eat provides the body with glucose, which is used by the cells as a source of energy. If insulin isn&39;t available or doesn&39;t work correctly to move glucose from the blood into the cells, glucose will stay in the blood, leading to high blood sugar levels.

High blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels, including the tiny blood vessels in the eye. This leads to an eye disease known as diabetic retinopathy (糖尿病型视网膜病). The retina (视网膜) is an area at the back of the eye that changes light into nerve signals, With diabetic retinopathy, some blood vessels in the retina are lost, and some of the other blood vessels begin to "leak" blood. This causes the retina to swell and gradually cuts off its supply of oxygen and nutrients (滋养物). Eventually, the retina starts to grow new blood vessels to replace the damaged ones. Unfortunately, these new vessels are not as strong as the old ones. They are more likely to break, causing bleeding in the eye.

At first, people with diabetic retinopathy will not notice any symptoms. As the disease gets worse, they may notice blurred (模糊的) vision, black spots or flashing lights. As time goes on, it can progress to blindness.

Everyone with diabetes is at risk for diabetic retinopathy, andthe risk increases the longer you&39;ve had diabetes.

Fortunately, you can reduce your risk if you do not have diabetes, but think you may be at risk for this condition. Visit your doctor to be screened for diabetes. If you do have diabetes: have frequent eye check-ups.

Make sure that you monitor your blood sugar frequently and use your medications as

recommended by your doctor. There is evidence to show that keeping your blood sugar under tight control can slow down eye damage. If you have high blood pressure, follow your recommended diet and medications to keep it under control. If you are not sure whether you have high blood pressure, or whether your blood pressure is under control, discuss this with your doctor.
