Part B

Directions :

Read the short speeches on, the health effects of smoking given by five doctors. For questions 61 to

65, match the name of each doctor to one of the statements (A to G)given. below. Mark your answers

on, ANS WER SHEET1.

Panla:

There is no safe cigarette and no safe level of consumption. Some smokers think that switching

from stronger to milder cigarettes makes smoking safer, but this isn't true. For smokers usually

swallow the smoke deeper, or they often smoke the cigarettes to the shortest length. So, even if

you do make the switch but don't make these changes, the health benefits are very small when

compared to the benefits of quitting.

Jenny:

Anyone who smokes is at a risk of being harmed physically. As you continue to smoke, your

body learns to depend on cigarettes and you can smoke more and more. Just three cigarettes a day

can spark potentially fatal heart disease, and women are particularly at risk. It is never too early for

cigarettes to cause damage; it can start with the first cigarette.

Joanne:

There are many short-term health effects of smoking. A major consequence is decreased lung

function. This often leads to shortness of breath, constant cough and tiring easily during exercise.

Smoking also reduces the ability to smell and taste and causes early ageing of skin. Often people

don't realize that a smoking-related disease could be developing for years before it is detected. A

" smoker' s cough" or shortness of breath are early signs of problems which can be fatal.

Jocelyn :

For women, cigarette smoking increases the risk of a number of sex-specific health problems.

Smoking women can experience irregular periods. Smokers that are on the pill have a greater risk

of heart attack, stroke and other diseases. What' s more, stroke doesn' t only affect elderly people.

People in their 20s and 30s also die from strokes caused by smoking.

Amanda:

Many young women regard their smoking as short term, and don't believe they will develop

the long-term health effects of smoking. Often there' s a sense that you can just quit sometime in

the future. However, your current smoking is doing you damage, and it won't be easier to quit at

a later stage. The time to quit smoking is sooner rather than later. Smoking women in the family

way can have difficulties during childbirth.

Now match the name of each person,(61 t0 65) to the appropriate statement.

Note : there are two extra statements.

Statements

[A] Smoking affects all, though it is more damaging to women.

[B] Smoking is always damaging regardless of what cigarettes to be

[C] The longer you smoke, the more difficult you will give it up.

[D] Damage can be done as soon as you start smoking.

[E] Smoking will cause the early ageing of the women in the family way.

[F] People often overlook the early signs of the deadly problems resulting from smoking.

[G] Male smokers are more likely to develop smoking-related diseases than female smokers.

Part B

Directions :

Read the texts from a magazine article in which five people talked about the importance of doing ex-ercise. For questions 61 t0 65, match the name of each person, to one of the statements (A to G)given, be-low. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET1.

Eufracio Tolentino:

I did regular exercise when I was young, but by my 30s, I had a family and a busy job. I neg-

lected exercise for years. At 59, I had a stroke that resulted from lack of exercise. Now I visit a re-

covering center in the morning and spend my afternoons exercising. I encourage my friends a start

exercising. If they don't, engaging too much in their work or family, they may also suffer from a

stroke.

Raymond Cbiew:

Think you' re healthy just because you' re within your ideal weight range for your height?

Wrong! Take me as an example. I figured I got enough exercise playing tennis once a week, for I

wasn't overweight and didn't smoke or drink. Then at 57, I woke up one early morning with chest

pains and tests revealed that I had serious heart trouble. I was shocked. Now I walk for an hour every

day and my doctor says that my heart is improving.

Dr Santos-Ringor:

Whether you hire a personal trainer, take exercise classes at the community center or rent exer-

cise videos, spending money on fitness is really money well spent, for health is wealth. But if you

can' t afford any of those, just get a comfortable pair of shoes: walk is free. I form. an exercise group

with friends; play catch with my kids or set aside Saturdays for long walks in the country.

Ruth Cheah:

You're never too late or too out of shape to start exercising. I didn' t start to exercise on a regu-

lar basis until I was 59. Now, as old as 79, I take a daily 45-minute walk, go swimming twice a

week. These exercises free me from medicines, and I feel active and alert. People tell me that Ilook

younger than my age.

V. M. Chandran:

Many people start exercising because they want to lose weight, and when that doesn't happen

immediately, they may give up. But the same volume of muscle weights more than that of fat, so a

large person who is fit could be healthier than a thin person who is not. When I saw my weight rise

past 90 kilos in my late 40s, I began taking walks for 45 minutes a day. Even though I still weigh o-

ver 90 kilos, I feel much stronger. I'm proud to have muscles, not fat.

Now match the name of each person, (61 t0 65) to the appropriate statement.

Note :there are two extra statements.

Statements

[A] Rich people know that health is wealth.

[B] Exercise does not necessarily mean a big-money game.

[C] Proper exercise is a must even if you are not overweight.

[D] One will pay dearly for ignoring exercise due to the heavy de-mands of life.

[E] Old age or poor health is never an excuse for being inactive.

[F] Exercise is good as long as it helps lose weight.

[G] The right proportion of muscle and fat is the criterion of health.

Children's museums in America are delivering a report card to be envied.

Since 1990, estimated I00 youth museums have opened, with at least 80 more in the planning phase. There are now 215 such institutions in the United States focusing on a variety of themes and subjects, although many are mainly designed for science popularization.

"Children's museums are the fastest-growing cultural institutions in the world," says Janet Rice Elman, executive director of the Association of Youth Museums in the US. "That trend will continue as we see more communities wanting to start up children's museums to enrich civic (公民的) and family life."

With the availability of these new facilities, attendance has sky-rocketed, in 1991, 8 million people visited US children's museums; last year, 33 million people went through their doors.

This cheerful picture is part of a comprehensive look at children's museums released last week by the association during its annual conference in St. Louis.

The growth can be traced to the nation's rising number of children, the push to foster learning from a variety of approaches, and the increasing popularity of museums in general.

Children's museums are a favorite destination for groups of school children on school-organized "field trips". During these days outside the classroom, students have the chance to learn about a range of topics in a fun, hands-on way.

Students visiting a children's museum can see exhibits on anything from natural history to anatomy (解剖学) to astronomy (天文学). The museums focus on interactive learning, with games and demonstrations designed to help kids learn without realizing they're doing so.

The museums are also a popular destination for families, allowing parents to become more involved in their kids' education and give parents and children a chance to have fun together.

How many children's museums have been set up in America in the past 15 years?

A.About 100.

B.Less than 80.

C.Over 180.

D.Altogether 215.

Part BDirections:The 12,000 members of the Electricity Workers' Union went on strike last

Part B

Directions:

The 12,000 members of the Electricity Workers' Union went on strike last week and since then there has been no electricity. For questions 61~65, match the names with the statements below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

Mr. Mike Smith:

It wasn't an easy decision, but we've been asking for a decent wage for years. Now at las people are beginning to listen to us. We' re only asking for a 25 percent increase in our wages. 250 dollars a week, that's all. It's a pity so many people have to be inconvenienced by our strike. Bu please don't blame us. Blame the government for refusing our claim.

Mr. Tom Brown:

It' s totally unreasonable to demand so much money when we are trying desperately to control inflation. If wages go up ,so do prices. If we gave in to the electricity workers, all the other unions would want more, with the inevitable result that the crisis would become uncontrollable. What we' re trying to impress upon everybody is that inflation hurts everybody, especially the poor people. We offer the electricity workers a 10 percent increase. And that' s already too much. My stand at this meeting will be to persuade the Union to see reason.

Mr. Bob Davis:

Everybody will be hurt by this strike, including the electricity workers themselves. The economy will be destroyed and many people will lose their jobs. Already people are saying that the big unions have too much power and shouldn't be allowed to strike. Of course the electricity workers want to get more money. Don't we all?

Mrs. Baker.

My opinion is "Get the Army in". All the power stations should be managed by the army. The strikers should be thrown into prison. That' s what this country needs. Why must we all suffer just because a few men are greedy? If they don't like their jobs, nobody' s forcing them to work. They should try and live on 50 dollars a week like I have to. Perhaps they' d keep their mouths shut then.

Miss Slater:

Let's face it. It's neither here nor there. The electricity workers are in a strong position. Perhaps we can't do anything about it. What I say is: let them have their 250 dollars so we can return to work. I mean, the government wastes the taxpayers' money all the time on trivial things. How can anyone say 250 dollars is "too much"? Pop singers get more. Nurses get less. It's just one of those things.

Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement.

Note: there are two extra statements.

Statements

[A] A 10% increase is already too much, and I'm here to persuade the Union to see reason.

[B] I hope that strikes should be banned in all sectors relating to the nation' s security and stability.

[C] We will never go back to work until our goals are achieved.

[D] I think that the government should give in to the electricity worker' s demands.

[E] I strongly suggest that all the power stations should be run by the army and that the strikers should be put into prison.

[F] I must make you clear that strikes will destroy the economy and that many people will lose their jobs.

[G] We are forced to call a strike because the government rejected our wage claim.
