阅读:THE CLASSROOM is a man's world, where boys get two thirds of the teachers' attention

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

THE CLASSROOM is a man's world, where boys get two thirds of the teachers' attention — even when they are in a minority— taunt (辱骂) the girls without punishment, and receive praise for sloppy work that would not be tolerated from girls. They are accustomed to being teachers' pets, and if girls get anything like equal treatment, they will protest eagerly and even wreck lessons.

These claims are made in a book out this week, written by Dale Spender, a lecturer at the London University Institute of Education. She argues that discrimination against girls is so deeply in co educational schools that single sex classes are the only answer. Her case is based on tape recordings of her own and other teachers' lessons. Many of them, like Spender, had deliberately set out to give girls a fair chance. “Sometimes,” says Spender, “I have even thought I have gone too far and have spent more time with the girls than the boys.”

The tapes proved otherwise. In 10 taped lessons (in secondary school and college), Spender never gave the girls more than 42 per cent of her attention (the average was 38 percent) and never gave the boys less than 58 percent. There were similar results for other teachers, both male and female. In other words, when teachers give girls more than a third of their time, they feel that they are cheating the boys of their rightful share. And so do the boys themselves. “She always asks the girls all the questions,” said one boy in a classroom where 34 per cent of the teachers' time was allocate d to girls. “She doesn't like boys, and just listens to the girls.” said a boy in another class, where his sex got 63 per cent of teacher attention. Boys regarded two thirds of the teacher's time as a fair deal — and when they got less they caused trouble in class and even complained to higher authority. “It's important to keep their attention,” said one teacher, “Otherwise, they play you up something awful.” Spender concludes that, in mixed classes, if the girls are as boisterous and pushy as the boys, they are considered “unladylike”, if they are docile and quiet, they are ignored.

26. If boys are better treated in class, ____ would be better.

A) single sex classes and co educational classes B) co educational classes

C) single sex classes D) None of the above

27. Dale Spender obtained the evidence for her claims by ____ .

A) her own lessons in secondary school and college

B) the other teachers' tape recordings

C) both male and female teachers

D) tape recordings of her own and other teachers' lessons

28. What are the boy's reactions when girls are given more attention?

A) They will keep the teachers' attention again.

B) They will make some trouble and complain to the headmaster.

C) They will play up the teacher something awful.

D) They will feel they are cheated by teachers.

29. The word “boisterous” in the last paragraph probably means ____.

A) rough B) brave C)troublesome D) emotional

30. The best title for this passage would be ____.

A) boys are teachers' pets

第二节 短文理解1

阅读下面短文,从[A](Right)、[B](Wrong)、[C](Doesn't Say)三个判断中选择一个正确选项。

In order to study efficiently (高效率地), you need to have a place that is always, and only, used for studying. This should be your own desk in your own room. Your desk should be free from anything that may interrupt (打断) your study, such as photos, letters, newspapers, or a radio. All the things you need for study should be put at your hand: textbooks, notebooks, dictionaries, pens and pencils. On the left of your desk(or on your right if you are left-handed) should be a good lamp (台灯) to light up your work. Because your desk is your own place of study, it should not be used for anything else. Even for reading the newspaper or an important letter, go somewhere else. When you come to your desk, you should think of nothing but your study.

However, your place of study, at home or in the classroom, may sometimes be noisy. Many students, therefore, would like to study in the library. There they are not often interrupted.

This text is most probably written for students.

A.Right.

B.Wrong.

C.Doesn't say.

Is staring at a big, white wall during class making you feel dull? If you have ever walked past math teacher Mr. Kelley' s room, you may have noticed how cheerful it is throughout the year. One thing that makes his classroom so much fun is the celebrity (名人) pictures on his front wall. Kelley ' s students have been writing to celebrities from across the nation asking for a photo and a few words of advice. "It really takes a lot of time and money," Kelley said. First, Kelley and his students make a list of all the celebrities to whom they want to write. Once a student picks a star, Kelley looks them up in his book of addresses to see if he can write to that person.

Writing to the stars takes a lot of time because he has personalize each letter, print them out, and address them. In the letter, Kelley asks the celebrity to send his classes a picture with some advice he or she would give to today' s youth.

Kelley takes up a collection in all of his classes and asks each student to contribute (捐) a dollar to pay for the postage. Once Kelley mails off all the letters, the fun really begins. So far he has gotten back about 20 letters and pictures. "The only thing that isn' t cool is when the celebrity sends the picture back with no advice on it, which is my entire purpose in doing this, " said Kelley. When he gets at least three pictures retumed, he lets his classes guess who the three stars are. He keeps score of how many celebrities each class has guessed. Jason Bryant, a student, said, "It' s become a contest (竞赛) between the classes to see who can guess the most stars, and it' s really fun. "

Internet-based Instruction

By almost any measure, there is a boom in Internet-based instruction. In just a few years, 34 percent of American universities have begun offering some form. of distance learning (DL ) , and among the larger schools, it&39;s closer to 90 percent. If you doubt the popularity of the trend, you probably haven&39;t heard of the University of Phoenix. It grants degrees entirely on the basis of online instruction. It enrolls 90 000 students, a statistic used to support its claim to be the largest private university in the country.

While the kinds of instruction offered in these programs will differ, DL usually signifies a course in which the instructors post syllabi (课程大纲) , reading assignments, and schedules on Websites, and students send in their assignments by e-mail. Generally speaking, face-to-face communication with an instructor is minimized or eliminated altogether.

The attraction for students might at first seem obvious. Primarily, there&39;s the convenience promised by courses on the Net : you can do the work, as they say, in your pajamas (睡衣 ) . But figures indicate that the reduced effort results in a reduced commitment to the course. While drop-out rates for all freshmen at American universities is around 20 percent, the rate for online students is 35 percent. Students themselves seem to understand the weaknesses inherent in the setup. In a survey conducted for eCornell, the DL division of Cornell University, less than a third of the respondents expected the quality of the online course to be as good

as the classroom course.

Clearly, from the schools&39; perspective, there&39;s a lot of money to be saved. Although some of the more ambitious programs require new investments in servers and networks to support collaborative software, most DL courses can run on existing or minimally upgraded (升级) systems. The more students who enroll in a course but don&39;t come to campus, the more the school saves on keeping the lights on in the classrooms, paying doorkeepers, and maintaining parking lots. And, while there&39;s evidence that instructors must work harder to run a DL course for a variety of reasons, they won&39;t be paid any more, and might well be paid less.

What is the most striking feature of the University of Phoenix?

A.All its courses are offered online

B.Its online courses are of the best quality
