When I come across a good essay in reading newspaper, I often feel like cutting and keep i

t. But just as I am about to do so I find the article on the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to keep in good health, or advice about how to be oneself in society. If I cut the front essay, the opposite one is bound to suffer damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text without the subject. As a result, the scissors would stay before they start, or halfway done. when I find out the result that inevitably(不可避免地) causes my regret. Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both, deserving your attention. You can only take up one of them, the other has to wait or be given up. But you know the future unpredictable (不可预见的 )--the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left behind. Thus you are caught in a fix and feel sad. How come that nice chances and brilliant ideas should gather.around all at once? It may happen that your life changes dramatically on your preference of one alternative to the other.

In fact that is what life is like: we are often faced with the two opposite sides of a thing which are both desirable like newspaper cutting. It often-occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only after we take up another. The former may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divided mind. I still remember a philosopher' s(哲学家) remarks: "When one door shuts, another opens in life. " So a passive choice may not be a bad one.

Whatever we do in our lifetime, wherever life' s storm makes us go, there must be something we can achieve, some shore we can land on. Don' t forget God always keeps an alternative door open for everyone. While the front door is closed, there must be another open door for you.

The main idea of this passage is ______.

A.where there' s a will, there's a way

B.cutting newspapers gives us a lesson

C.all roads lead to Rome

D.an equal chance is provided for everyone

听力原文: I wasn't too fond of the lecture classes of 400 students that were in my general courses. Halfway through my second term, when I was considering whether or not to come back in the fall, I went on the Internet and came across AmeriCorps. Then I joined the organization. And that was what I did last school year. I worked on making roads, building a house and serving as a teacher's assistant. It's been a great experience.

And I've almost learned more than what I could have in college. Since I didn't really want to ha at that school and I wasn't interested in my major anyway, I think this was better for me. After 1,700 hours of service, I received 4,750 dollars. I can use that to pay off the money I harrowed from the banks or for what I need when I go hack to school this fall at Columbus State in Ohio. Classes are smaller there, and I'll be majoring in German education. After working with the kids, now I know I want to be a teacher.

Why did the man decide to leave the college in his second term?

A.He didn't like the big lecture classes.

B.He couldn't afford further education.

C.He was not interested in education.

听力原文: When I was in British Columbia last July working at the department's archaeological dig, I saw the weirdest rainbow. At first I couldn't believe my eyes because the bands of color I saw weren't in a single half circle across the sky. Instead, I saw a full circle of rainbow hues hanging in the sky just above the sea. Inside the circle there was a big white disc and above the circle there was another round band of colors forming a halo. There were curved legs of multicolored light coming off the sides of the circles. It was an incredible sight.

I ran back to our main camp and tried to get our cook to come with me to see my fantastic find before it disappeared. He just laughed at my exciting story and told me that what I saw was nothing special.., just some "sun dogs". He said I'd be sure to see many more before I left. And sure enough, I did. When I got back from the dig I asked Professor Clark about the "sun dogs," and she's going to tell us more about them.

26. Why was the student in British Columbia?

27.What did the student find so unusual about the "rainbow" he saw?

28.What was inside the large circle?

29.What did the cook say about the phenomenon the student had seen?

30.What did the cook call the phenomenon?

(31)

A.To study its geography.

B.To help at an archaeological dig.

C.To take a vacation with friends.

D.To do research for a physics project.

When you read in English, you are likely to come across words or phrases that you don't un
derstand. Looking these up in a dictionary can be very time-consuming and frustrating, how ever. This makes it difficult to enjoy reading, and it is impractical as well, if you have to read pages at a time.

When you read in your native language, what do you do if you come across a word that you don't know? You may occasionally check with a dictionary, but most of the time you guess the meanings of unfamiliar words from the context. You can do the same when you read in English.

If you don't know the word "euphemism" and you read it in the sentence, "Pass away is a euphemism for die." How do you figure out what it means without looking in a dictionary? If you look at the other major words in the sentence--pass away and die--you see that they mean almost the same thing, but that pass away is an indirect or less harsh way of saying die. There fore, a euphemism must be an indirect or less harsh way of saying something. You are able to figure out the meaning of a word that you didn't know by looking for clues in the context.

Sometimes an author will tell you the meaning of an unfamiliar word, or restate the idea in a way that gives you a clue to the meaning of the unfamiliar word. The sentence "His ideas are really half-baked; he just does not think them out well," is an example of a restatement of the idea. The second half of the sentence restates the idea of the first, so half-baked means "not thought out well".

An author may also give an example or illustration of an unfamiliar word. In the sentence, "I was very apprehensive, as if I were waiting to see the dentist," the feeling being described is compared with the common experience of waiting to see the dentist. How do you feel when waiting to see the dentist? You probably feel nervous about what might happen, and that's what apprehensive means.

Another kind of clue to look for is a word or phrase that is contrasted with the unfamiliar word. In the sentence, "When you remember how shy he used to be, it's hard to believe how outgoing he is now." the word shy, which you probably know, is contrasted with the word outgoing, which may be unfamiliar. Since the opposite of shy is friendly, or eager to mix socially, you can guess what outgoing probably means.

You Should keep in mind that it is not always necessary to understand the exact meaning of a word when you are reading. If you are able to get a general idea of the meaning of an unfamiliar word, that is sufficient for most types of reading.

In the author's opinion, looking up all the words you don't know when you are reading in English is______.

A.a very difficult and impractical job

B.not reasonable and interesting

C.a waste of time and a bore to you

D.impossible because you haven't time

Dolphins are interesting animals. Working with them is fun, because you never know what th
ey will come up with to surprise you.

Remember when your mom used to cut up your food? Circe, a show dolphin, won't eat fish unless someone cuts the fins (鱼鳍) off. Diana Reiss, a scientist who worked with Circe, knew that. But one day she forgot.

Reiss was training Circe to "stay at station" in front of her. Every time the dolphin swam off, Reiss gave her a time-out by backing away from the side of the pool and standing at a distance. When Circe stayed, Reiss fed her a piece of fish. But then she gave her a piece with fins by mistake.

Circe looked at Reiss, spat(吐) out the fish, and swam across the pool. She took an upright position in the water and simple "stood" there. Circe was communicating (交流) loud and clear. "I felt as if I had gotten the time-out! " says Reiss.

Another dolphin, Pete, enjoyed his meals of fish served up by his trainer. But a wild bird started to show up at every feeding to steal some of the dolphin's supper. Pete was definitely not happy about that.

One day when Pete's trainer gave him frozen fish, Pete let them sink to the bottom of his pool. Between shows he dived down and pushed eight fish up to the surface, and managed to keep all of them afloat. For five minutes, the bird watched anxiously. Finally, the bird took the bait. When it did, Pete caught the bird's feet and pulled it underwater! Then took care of that little thief.

Reiss would feed Circe a fish ______.

A.before Circe gave a performance

B.when Circe followed the instruction

C.the moment Circe swam close to Reiss

D.each time Reiss left the side of the pool

Harsh Reality of the American Dream

— by Humphrey Hawksley

(BBC News, United States)

It was a brilliant, hot day on the Seattle waterfront, with unspoilt views across the bay to outlying islands.

Just beyond a stretch of grass where people lay with books and lovers, came the melody of live unaccompanied singing. It turned out to be four men outside a cafe singing a love song about Cupid, each with different voice ranges, and a deep, swaying crowd, clapping along.

The Starbucks logo of the cafe struck me as a little old-fashioned until someone mentioned that this was the first Starbucks ever opened anywhere in the world.

I had come to Seattle because of a recent survey by the Centre for Economic Performance in London, on how easy or difficult it was to get rich in different parts of the world —or if not rich, at least move out of poverty.

"If you are born into poverty in the US," said one of its authors, "you are actually more likely to remain in poverty than in other countries in Europe, the Nordic countries, even Canada, which you would think would not be that different."

Possibilities

The Study, together with general anti-American sentiment (情绪) which has become more prevalent since the Iraq war, raised for me a question about the American dream —the idea that the United States is a place where anything is possible.

I had chosen Seattle not only because Starbucks was created there, but also because Microsoft and Amazon Books and Boeing airliners all come from this small city. Dreams, if you want, which began small but are now global brands.

"Great day, isn't it?" I turned to see the lined, and drawn face of a man I will call Dave. "Are you getting what you want?"

We had met a couple of days earlier when he was having breakfast at a charity for the broke and homeless, and I had asked him if he believed in the American dream.

"The American dream." Dave said, eating a muffin and wiping his lips with a paper napkin.

"Well, it comes and goes. It will come again."

Winners and losers

In a low-ceilinged eating hall, maybe 100 men sat side by side along trestle tables. They had queued up since five, registered in case there was any work, then ate while security guards watched over them in case there was trouble.

In Europe or just across the border in Canada, they would be more likely to get social security, but this was America, where society is harshly divided into winners and losers.

Strangely, though, there seemed to be little resentment or blame of government. American culture is about self-reliance and the individual fighting a way through.

"The American dream," said one of the men, his eyes dartingly alive, his nose so skewed it must have been broken many times in different fights.

"I guess you are talking about a home, wife, children and all that."

"Do you have it?" I said.

"No. No. I don't. I had my opportunities, but I lost."

Control

Just up the road in a small print shop, a fit, thoughtful former air force officer, Bobby Ray Forbes, was slotting calendars into envelopes.

His life collapsed when his marriage went wrong. He had ended up on the street, but recently had managed to get a job a
