听力原文: The word "university" comes from the Latin word "universitas", meaning "the whole". Later, in Latin legal language, "universitas" meant a society or corporation. In the Middle Ages, the word meant "an association of teachers and scholars". The origins of universities can be traced back to the 12th to 14th centuries. In the early 12th century, long before universities were organized in the modern sense, students gathered together for higher studies at certain centers of learning. The earliest centers in the Europe were at Bolonia in Italy, founded in 1088. Other early centers were set up in France, the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany from 1150 to 1386. The first universities in Britain were Oxford and Cambridge. They were established in 1185 and 1209 respectively. The famous London University was founded in 1836. This was followed by the foundation of several universities such as Manchester and Birmingham, which developed from provincial colleges. It was in the 1960's that the largest expansion of higher education took place in Britain. This expansion took 3 basic forms: existing universities were enlarged, new universities were developed from existing colleges and completely new universities were set up. In Britain, finance for universities comes from three source: the first, and file largest source, is grants from the government, the second source is fees paid by students and the third one is private donations. All the British universities except one receive some government funding. The exception is Buckingham, which is Britain's only independent university.

听力原文: When I left school I went to university here in Nairobi. I studied electronics and communications. I finished studying in 1992 and then I got my first job. That was with Siemens. I stayed there for five years. With the growth of the Internet, I decided that I wanted to have my own business as a consultant to people wanting to set up websites. I went to the bank and they loaned me some money. Two months after I got this, I left Siemens and took a management course at Kenya College of Communications Technology. "All I hear in higher education is, brand, brand, brand," said Tim Westerbeck, who specialises in branding and is managing director of Lipman Hearne, a marketing firm based in Chicago that works with universities and other nonprofit organisations. "There has been a sea change over the last 10 years. Marketing used to be almost a dirty word in higher education."
Not all efforts at name changes are successful, of course. In 1997, the New School for Social Research became New School University to reflect its growth into a collection of eight colleges, offering a list of majors that includes psychology, music, urban studies and management. But New Yorkers continued to call it the New School. Now, after spending an undisclosed sum on an online survey and a marketing consultants creation of "naming structures", "brand architecture" and "identity systems", the university has come up with a new name: the New School. Beginning Monday, it will adopt new logos, banners, business cards and even new names for the individual colleges, all to include the words "the New School".
Changes in names generally reveal significant shifts in how a college wants to be perceived. In altering its name from Cal State, Hayward, to Cal State, East Bay, the university hoped to project its expanding role in two mostly suburban countries east of San Francisco.
Beaver College turned itself into Arcadia University in 2001 for several reasons: to break the connection with its past as a womens college, to promote its growth into a full-fledged(完全成熟的)university and officials acknowledged, to eliminate some jokes about the colleges old name on late-night television and "morning zoo" radio shows. Many college officials said changing a name and image could produce substantial resuits. At Arcadia, in addition to the rise in applications, the average students test score has increased by 60 points, Juli Roebeck, an Arcadia spokeswoman, said.
According to Tim Westerbeck, colleges or universities changing their names to compete for market share______.
A.is inadvisable
B.is actually a marketing strategy
C.reflects they don"t pay much attention to their inner quality
D.has positive influence on the development of higher education

听力原文: I'm Dr. Leeds from the university clinic. I have been asked to speak to you on jogging, that is running slowly.
Now is running better than any other sport? Than manual labor? Exercise seems to be the key to health. And it should be constant and regulated.
By constant I mean you shouldn't study like crazy Monday through Friday and then run one hour Saturday and another Sunday. Do a little each day; a ten minutes walk is enough to start out with.
When I said regulated I meant you should check with your doctor before you begin any hard exercise of any kind, especially if you're over 30. If you run a mile a day and want to enter a six-mile race next spring, work up to it. Increase distance by an eighth of a mile, for instance, twice a week.
Now a word about warm-ups. Don't forget to do a few good stretching exercises before you start, five or ten minutes is enough.
What about shoes? Good morning shoes are good to your feet. This can't always be measured by a price tag. Look for a pair of comfortable shoes at a reasonable price.
One more word: you have to figure out why you are jogging. If you are trying to make yourself healthier, you probably will. If you like to nm, if it makes you feel great, do it.
I'll be glad to answer any questions you might have over in the clinic. I'm in Room 530 and I'm available every day from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

A.It is the key to better work.
B.It is the key to better health.
